Wow. Tori is and has been my favorite singer/songwriter for the past 30 years now. In all that time, I have never come across a cover of one of her songs that I liked. This. This is on another level. Well done!
AMAZING cover. by far the best tori cover i've heard - amythyst's take on it is so original, and like tori does with her covers, she totally made it her own. rad rad rad
I saw Amethyst the other night in Chicago with Iron and Wine and my husband and I were both blown away! Two new fans here. And we almost fell out of our seats when they mentioned The Old Gods of Appalachia. We were JUST with our friend last weekend and he's the narrator of the podcast! Then I find this and I'm so excited because Tori is my obsession. I can't wait to see them live again!
The song "sugar" is about how Tori spent 9 months drinking tea with a guy she had a huge crush on and he kept forgetting how she took her tea and it royally pissed her off. I wanted to share that bit of info because it's one of my favorite music trivia facts, hahaha. I've been a fan of Tori since I was 12 and I'm 35 now. This was absolutely stunning. Wonderful job Amythyst!
She definitely brought up that anecdote about the tea when performing it live in the early years, but I think it's deeper than that. Maybe it's evolved over the years, as many of her songs do. And the songs can definitely mean different things to different people. But I really get the sense that this song is about someone being afraid to be themselves because of what would happen to them socially. When she sang it live in the Venus era, she'd always add "sweet boy when they find you out, when they find you got a little in here... You're such a p***y, my sweet boy, my sugar." It's almost definitely a reference to how the expectations of masculinity within the patriarchy leave little room for sensitive men to be themselves.

Love it and I respect the fact that you didn't try to perform it like Tori but rather made it your own. So refreshing. Great job!
This is fantastic. Sugar is one of my favorites of Tori's

quality. You took one the best ever Tori songs and gave it your own spin keeping the power.
That takes real talent
I love this cover of Sugar - gives such a different energy and vibe to the song and elevates it in a new way.
I get goosebumps just like when I listen to Tori sing this, especially during certain lines. ❤
One of my favs. You covered it perfectly. 🙏

Has Tori seen this? She would fucken love it
Oh wow, this is awesome.🎉
This is amazing. Tori covers are SO hard because she is so idiosyncratic... but you killed this!!!

John Evans is her bassist they've been playing together for years
This is amazing!

Absolutely fucking incredible
YES
01:30 Very good..
it could be Jon Evans on bass if you're talking about Scarlet's Walk-era tour.
He's still her bass player he's been with her since very early on I just saw her on July 11,2023
