For the people asking in the comments why Idols aren't educated on these things and why they are offensive-- South Korea is really not a multicultural society where you get exposed to different cultures and learn what is okay when engaging with culture and what is not. It's largely mono-ethnic, only 2-4% of the people living in Korea is not Korean and that's largely made up of people from China, Vietnam, Thailand etc. For a lot of Idols, their only exposure to people from other races is popular culture which usually doesn't go into the nuances of racism and cultural appropriation.
Ignorance can only excuse so much obviously and I'm not saying POC should automatically forgive an idol for doing something extremely offensive. But a one-off incident where the idol apologises and makes an effort to educate themselves is probably coming from genuine ignorance rather than hate.

Yeah, a lot of countries are like that and I think it’s just weird to people in some countries because like I leave my house and I see people of other races and I learn like socially what’s not okay, so like in a place where there’s not that like vibe and such it’s hard to learn what’s okay and what’s not because nobody’s calling you out for it

i hate this bc many idols say that they’re inspired by the black community and the music we produce (or other times, they’re just flat out stealing from us) but they don’t have the time to look into why we made those songs? or why rap is one of the main forms of protest for us?
i honestly don’t care for this reason as to why they were racist or why they made a "mistake." they’re constantly using our culture and music for themselves and their concepts and yet, still stay ignorant. it’s not ignorance at this point. it’s carelessness.

@@Yuunarichu I get what you're saying, but there would be very few people in the world who learn English as a second language for the sake of learning about and getting to know another culture. English is simply the most universal language in the world, most Asian and European countries have English as a subject at school due to this fact. If you wanted to learn English or learn about the culture you would learn latin and other pre-cursors to English, not English itself. There is absolutely no problem in learning a language for the sake of learning a language, all it means is that if you don't live in a country where the language is commonly spoken, you wouldn't get to learn about the slang and nuances that come with the language, frankly that would be difficult for English anyway since every country that speaks it predominantly has its own slang, unlike Korean where only two countries in the world consider it an official language.

I mean, what kind of person would I be if I allow such stupid things to divide the world.
A lot (for real, a lot) of countries in the world discriminate Asian people, but no joking, actual discrimination. It's not fair.
I don't want to label a person because of a mistake, people has a lot of colors inside them. And knowing how MAMAMOO are trying to change the things in Korea, well, makes me want to support the love message they are sending.
I honestly don't think they hate black people, and I don't think the other groups hate black people. I don't even think they wanted to hurt someone, because they knows how it feels to be forced to fit a standard.
I'm feed up from netizens labelling and criticizing every single thing a celebrity do, like they were actual gods among us.

I still find the mamamoo thing so ridiculous to be offended by.

I think mamamoo definitely should have educated themselves before doing that, but at the same time, blackface is something that originated from the US and in other countries it doesn’t necessarily hold the same weight. They were dressing up as specific people, not a whole race. I do think they shouldn’t have done it, as it could offend some people, but many people from other countries like Korea dont know about blackfaces bad history here in the states.

Also when you said that thry were dressing up as especific ppl, not a whole race, BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED.
But "they shouldn't have done it because it could offend some people"...mmm nope. Cause, knowing this context, their good intentions and the cultural and historical difference, ppl shouldn't be offended. Or at least if you still offended, don't call out them for it because if you don't get all this context and keep with your own mindset, it is your issue...

The offline world, the world outside the kpop bubble, called “reality” doesn’t give a flying f about any of this.
      This isn’t even “racism”
It”s a bunch of 11 year olds thinking that they know what’s right and wrong and they’ve the understanding of psychology, others cultures, the entertainment world etc.
People wonder why kpop is never taken seriously… this is the exact reason why.
A majority of y’all haven’t even figured your own lives out yet, fixed your own problems first yet, but talk of people on the entire opposite side of the planet from you dictating their words, actions and thoughts because of a superiority complex y’all have.
Start with yourself. Once you’ve figured the right way to become the super human of the world then maybe the thoughts that fly on to the screen will matter.
Dictating what’s insulting for others who share your culture is a despicable habit.
It’s insulting to you, not the culture, not the people with in it.
Again, vast majority of the planet wouldn’t bash an eye lash and yet here everyone is thinking they can speak for them on what’s acceptable to do and say.

The so call education could not keep up with the day to day changes what is acceptable. We don't have a real common manners that everyone knows and agrees to. If you watched South Korean TV there once a years someone does black face. Before the internet it was not a problem because they didn't have the nanny telling them it was offensive. This idea that a person would have a omni knowledge. We have to learn South Korea manner only from watching videos. Their country the size of California with a monoculture. The US is not. Image if they follow Black twitter or Face Book. Their understanding of US culture would have the N-word acceptible.
South Korea is a very rigorous social order. You have to behave according to the government rules. Even on the internet. If the US government allows the speech and behavior. Then it okay to do.
You can understand their confusion when they think like a South Korean. What they see is acceptable because it's allowed on the internet. Most of what they saw from the internet was before SM got censorious. They would have to understand the complex changing state of US internet.

Ofc, Han has learned from his mistake, and most people did hold him accountable, he did apologise before the scandal [I think] and he said he wouldn't ever want to be that person again; to be so full of anger and be offensive. I think it's really sad how there's a lot more... uneducated? That sounds rude, but idols who aren't fully educated on this matter, has said, mocked, or did culture appropriation and have not apologised.
What's really funny though, is people [some antis, solo stans, some k-stans] who support some of the idols who haven't apologised, are haters of the ones who are. I also think it's sad how some people just don't hold the idols accountable because they're their biases, "favs", etc. I think no matter they're your bias or not, [mine is Han, and I'm in one of the groups he,, mentioned] you should still hold them accountable and educate them because it is highly offensive and disrespectful to the races/groups/cultures.
    There is another matter that has been brushed upon but not really dived into and that's hair styles and such. I remember Chan got called problematic and got hate because his hair was styled into cornrows. I'm pretty sure that most of the time, your hairstylists style your hair, so it might've not been in Chan's reach to do anything about it? I'm not sure, but Chan probably wouldn't do that as he wrote in 3RACHA's song himself;

She didn't even express judgement about white or black people. She was just showing what she observed. It's the same thing when you mimick a German or a Japanese way of speaking and act. I honestly hate the 12 year old me. I was nothing like how I am now. When I think of some of the things I used to think or I had done at that age, it makes me feel disgusted and I hate the fact that I was that person.
Honestly I'm nothing like that anymore, It's like that was a total different person. So umm time, puberty, experiences changes you A LOT. 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 are ages that are literally your "pre-growth" age, after that age is when you ACTUALLY starts growing as a person and see the world with your own eyes instead of thinking what other people around you taught you.
So for the Han one, judging someone's current personality based on something at that age? It's really dumb.
I'm not saying people are just stupid at that age, but a good mentality is something you actually have to achieve with a lot other elements and that process starts after a certain age. So be understanding.
The mistakes are still a mistake, but it dosen't define how they are now. + Han apologised genuinely even before it turned into a scandal. He genuinely felt it was wrong.

Han Jisung's past is a bit messy, especially that cringeworthy racist rap he dropped at the tender age of 13. No excuses - he messed up big time. But give the guy credit for not playing the "I was young" card. He owned it, offered a heartfelt apology, and has clearly transformed into a more respectful and loving person over the years.
Now, here's the deal. Fans, don't be pulling the "he was just a kid," "didn't understand English," or "Korea isn't multicultural" excuses. Han didn't use those, and you shouldn't either. He faced the music, apologized sincerely, and it's time to focus on the Han Jisung we see today - a dude who's learned, grown, and is making things right. Let's support his journey to becoming a better person without downplaying the past.💕

I think it was a bit different with Wendy if I remember correctly. She wasn't asked to talk like black people and she was like this. I thought they asked her basically "Show us how black people sound in Hollywood movies", which sometimes is too much, because Hollywood movies are sometimes stupid and racist (for example movies taking place in Mexico -> orange filter and tadaa done,...)
I don't remember it really and I don't wanna advocate for her in case I don't remember it correctly, but I think it was like this really.
Edit : Just checked it. So
    1. First she showed how white girls talk (which idk why isn't included here? Talking about black people is bad but about white will be ignored when it's in the same video? Okay sure...) and after she showed that there is literally written in subtitles of that video that it should be like in some movie. She even shows the hand movements that is usually seen in movies.
Then she shows the same for black people and it literally is the way of talking we see in movies. So idk what's wrong in imitating how white and black people talk in movies with the changes in accent, when she literally was trying to show that.
If it's wrong, then Wendy isn't the bad one, but all the movies and TV shows are bad to show these stereotypes 24/7. She was just recreating TV basically when she was asked to sooo 💁‍♀️💁‍♀️💁‍♀️
Edit number two: If someone was racist, then the other people in the video. They were laughing at how Wendy did it, they made it even more ridiculous and made parodies on how she said it, which YEA is too much. Also the woman there said "African-American women are scary" WHICH IS LIKEEEE ????
And people talk about Wendy while 10 seconds after that a clown show starts. Idk ..

I've seen somewhere that a black guy uses like white paint or something to make his skin look brighter and acted like a white country guy, clearly mocking them. I never saw any hate comment because it was supposed to be a "joke" but when vise versa, people are getting mad and literally bringing down the person who did it and forcing them to apologise when clearly they never meant any racism. please remember that not only black people are getting mocked, but we asians too. if we really care about other people who was made fun because of their skin color/tone, please remember that there are far more racism agendas that are happening worse than that.

    • @jayennegiselle1836
      @jayennegiselle1836 Год назад +3

Definitely agree. Idk why it's always an issue when blacks are being portrayed respectfully too. I saw a person in comments questioning why people didn't say anything when in same video Wendy also did the valley girl, country accent and a person was like you can't be racist to whites and that you can't mock the whites because they're not oppressed. People can be racist to anybody regardless of their race and if they've been oppressed or not. Being oppressed once doesn't give you the free pass to mock or be racist towards people. Everything which is a reference to black culture becomes CA even when there's literally no ill-intent which is mostly the case. The word has lost it's meaning because of these people. So blacks can take things from other people's culture without doing CA but if somebody wears braids, which have been part of Asian and so many cultures since ages, they're doing CA? The amount of hypocrisy astonishes me. People should have the same energy to call out racist people even if they're of their own race including oppressed races. From this logic, no black should straighten their hair or go blonde or any other color prevalent in other races and don't use Asian/other culture's stuff. You shouldn't dictate what hairstyle people have when they're not mocking them at all. Your culture shouldn't be closed in a bubble when other people also share it and you use other's culture too. About the usage of n-word linked to one's skin color, I don't fully agree with some aspects but I won't say much since people will burn me over it.😅

So I don't condemn people doing something normal to them back then, but I see if they have apologized, tried to change their ways, or talked about it.
Hell, even cornrows are normal back then because it shows that you love hiphop. And since most of the OGs of hiphop wore cornrows, they copied out of sheer admiration. But of course, you can't do that now.

And honestly, don't lie and pretend that they don't get the same problems when they come to our countries.
Like, I just heard a radio show story from Aespa's Winter where she said, they were walking down the street, about to go get some food, it was the day before their final and exit LA show.
Someone rolled down their windows and said, as they drove by them, "Go back to China!"
You know how they felt, pretty horrible.
You know what else, they said they had no idea that people could be that mean.

Actually with the Wendy one. They asked her about the different accents she heard in Canada. Everybody wants to talk about her doing the ratchet accent, but nobody talks about the fact that in that same interview she did a stereotypical white girl valley accent, and a country accent. No they only talk about her talking ratchet and then labeling the behavior to black people. Even if it's a stereotype it's not a good one. Constantly lumping black people into the ratchet mindset is more racist than her doing what she did. Unless they say it's a black accent, it's not a black accent. She could have been mocking any race that talked that way. That whole topic will always annoy me. I know white people that sound ratchet maybe she was mocking them. Or the country accent and the valley accent why didn't anyone say she was being racist to white people. I sound like the valley accent, so I guess sounding stereotypically white she was being racist to me a black woman who sounds that way. It's bull and black people who are offended by it are simply indulging in self oppression and have a racial victim mentality. I said what I said.

    • @velvetluna5503
      @velvetluna5503 2 года назад +4

Okay there is a lot wrong with your comment, but we can start with the fact that first of all, you can't be racist to white people in Canada (and most western countries) because white people are not systemically oppressed there. You could be rude or have some sort of prejudice from past experiences, but mocking a valley girl accent does not have harmful ramifications. However, mocking blaccents/AAVE is harmful because it is part of an actual culture. It is not "ratchet". Blaccents and AAVE are also actively discriminated against in America/Canada, while a valley girl accent is not.

Nobody outside of the African American community are entitled to using AAVE (excluding non black people who grew up in black neighbourhoods), especially as a weapon to stigmatise their behaviour; in which case Wendy portrayed black women to be aggressive and rude with the way she was mocking their attitude and speech. She did this on national television where millions of genuinely ignorant Koreans with a colourist mindset would take her, an idol's message to heart, and keep the stigmatised impression of black women in their minds.

@@velvetluna5503 So now you'll define who people can be racist to? It's the same as saying blacks can't be racist because they've been oppressed. Anybody, oppressed or not can be racist to other person. You get offended at black issues but don't want the whites to be offended at theirs. Just like how you guys say if you're not black, you can't have an opinion, if you're not white then please don't have an opinion on white issues. And if you think what I'm saying is racist then please question your own hypocrisy. Raising awareness against black issues doesn't mean glossing over other races issues. You're ignorant just like the idols in the video. The Wendy thing was that they asked her to imitate how people of different races are portrayed in movies. It's not about Wendy but how movies portray certain races. She from Canada, learnt it through movies/internet, just as how people want idols to learn through internet. Not accurate information right? Then why you guys want the idols to learn from the internet when it's sometimes not accurate, especially about cultures. I'm all for supporting black people in their issues when they've rightfully been wronged but hating on somebody for something which they didn't even intended is not what I support. An accent can be part of black culture but that valley/country accent can't be part of White's culture? Why are you dictating cultures and what people should feel about? Presenting what you think as facts isn't the way to correct somebody. I'm sorry if I sound rude but you're literally being racist and ignorant in return when you want people to not be so. I'm not white if you may get offended at that.

It's one of the first things we are taught throughout our lives. Not just in school but also in our everyday lives. Using being idols as an excuse for themselves is no way to escape their responsibility. Idols are international role models. This means an international audience. If they can't be bothered to learn and grow and become normal decent human beings what's the point of becoming an idol. Especially since a lot of company's have said their music base's are black music. If your gonna use black music respect the black community, It's simple.

this is a topic that can be argued and talked about for hours on end, but at the end of the day an idol could do literal blackface and their fans will defend and make excuses for them instead of looking at the reality of the situation. bonus points if the they apologize, cause the fans will make sure you know they apologized and expect you to forgive the idol, forget they ever did blackface, rarely bring it up (especially not to a new fan), and move on with your life! but that's the reality we live in and these companies are still and will continue to make money whether we like it or not!
