You just saved me. I’ve been in excruciating pain since my baby was born. You are the first person to really explain how to latch. No one ever said to slide the baby down, everyone always says line nipple to nose. Thank you, I’m nursing in tears right now because it doesn’t hurt for the first time ever
SAME! Cried so many tears while breastfeeding for the past three weeks..! Tried this - zero pain!! Thank you so much for clearing this up😊 Greetings from Norway🇳🇴
After nursing my 4 week old and feeling like I couldn’t take it anymore due to the extreme pinching and burning discomfort afterwards, this video has made me so much more confident! Feeding as I type. So much more comfortable!
This saved me-I’ve been terrified of feeding my newborn each time bc of how bad it was hurting. My husband found your video, we watched it and tried it and immediate relief. Thank you SO much!!!
Thank you so much Alissa. My newborn is 1 and half month old. I really struggled a lot from his birth and cried at night. Very painful cracked nipple. Feeding with pain. I wanna do exclusive breastfeeding but this pain lead me to stress. Your video was so helpful for me. Now I'm started feeding without pain and discomfort. Nobody teaches me like the way explained. Thank you Jesus to let me see this helpful video.
Hands down the most helpful video I've found yet, and I thought I was a seasoned breastfeeder! This new baby would NOT take in enough breast and this eliminated my pain!
Oh my goodness…This video is such a blessing. I’m three weeks into nursing and have met with a lactation consultant and watched so many videos. I couldn’t figure out why it’s been so painful lately. The specific details that you give about lower lip and chin placement along with the triangle have made all the difference in the world because I was not doing it that way. Thank you so much!
This comment is long overdue. This video saved me and my baby. This video, especially tips #2 and #3 is what helped me get a latch at all. Tip #3 is just a lifesaver. I spent two weeks working with multiple lactation consultants and none of them mentioned it! Now my baby is 5 months old and his ped called him "juicy" because he is gaining weight very well. Thank you!! I've shared this video with every struggling mom I know and it's helped them too. It's been reshared in our mom group multiple times. God bless you. I can't thank you enough.
That is amazing to hear - thank you so much for taking the time to comment!! You've absolutely made my day to hear that it's helped you so much, and love that your bub was called 'juicy' by his paed. That's super cute!
Saved this for the next feeding. Crying while i watch it, crying from my nipples burning like crazy for the past week. It took 6 weeks of burning with my son, many people tried to help but just told me my nipples are too sensitive. I pray to god its not gonna be 6 weeks again as im really, really in bad pain. Thank you for this, i ll try later

I’m just so glad I found you the hospital people that work for lactation really don’t help they just watch and let you figure it out on your own 💔😭 thank you thank you thank a million times ❤️❤️❤️❤️
After a few months of successful breastfeeding my baby and I started struggling with getting a deep latch (I kept getting painful friction blisters on one side) and this video helped so much after only one day. I cried when we got a deep latch on our “bad” side. Thank you so much. ❤
So helpful! Actually got into specifics of how to get your baby latched well. My days of gritting my teeth through every second of every feed are over. I was so close to giving up. I am so grateful
This information is repeated because that’s what babies should instinctively do. If your baby isn’t doing this then it’s because a) they are positioned so they can’t tip their head back, or they’re chin is tucked down and this is preventing their mouth opening wide or b) they have tension in their neck and jaw muscles inhibiting their ability to open. I have a video on this which you can look at. Alternatively you might like to have your baby reviewed by an osteopath.
THANK YOU. I’ve had 3 babies and no one has explained to me how to obtain the deep latch and what “nose to nipple” means. Some lactation consultants have told me my “latch is fine” despite feeling so much pain! I’m going to try these tips and pray they make our breastfeeding journey even better ❤
That’s really lovely to hear that it’s been helpful and made sense to you - I really hope feeding starts to feel more comfy for you! Check out my other videos for a great latching technique which might help too!
Yes it did! And with time, her latch has gotten much better since she’s gotten stronger. I’m glad we stuck out the beginning, our breastfeeding experience has been lovely after that first 3-4 weeks. You can do it!
This is my first ever comment on any RUclips video ever but I have to say THANK YOU - I was sooo close to giving up breastfeeding until I watched this video (and your other video on breast sandwich). Immediately pain free (besides residual damage from doing it wrong) but it's a GAME CHANGER. THANK YOU.
I agree with all of the other comments, this seems to be the missing link to what all the other breastfeeding professionals teach. Seeing this sliding technique and positioning baby like this are game changers. Thank you so much for this video!!!
Very helpful. My wife is in super pain like she is crying when breastfeeding. She already wants to give up. Then we saw your video we tried it right away and it works! The pain is not that bad anymore. Thank you!
Thank you so much. I’ve never experienced the sort of pain I’m feeling with my baby this time around. I know he has a shallow latch, and these tips are so encouraging. I’m so close to giving up, but I’m going to try your recommendations. Thank you!!

This is honestly the best video I have seen and I have seen a lot. I have a 6w baby and after two weeks had a deep wound in which I could only resolve with antibiotics. When I went back after two weeks of bottle feeding things were really hard. The tip about sliding/turning your baby down before latching made all the difference!! I had perfect session the past 3 days thanks to yoU!
Seriously the best explanation. Did this right away with my newborn and instantly fixed my latch along with any pain i was having with my shallow latches before. THANK YOU.
This video has helped me understand the latch process and how I have been doing it wrong. WIth this 4th child I am determined to breastfeed longer and pain free. Thank you for this video.
Thanks for this video! I have my third baby and I needed a refresher on how to get a good latch. It’s amazing how easy it is to forget. And, I remember more of when my kiddos were older and knew what to do without so much prompting. Thanks!
Thanksssss alottt this videoss made my day easier and depressed free.. i was so exhausted to BF.. bcz it was so paifull but after watching ur video i m soooo thankfull that today i give my bf with full satisfaction and without pain.. lotss of prayer for u dear 😢❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much for the helpful video!! Your explanations are really clear and helped my wife and baby to breastfeed much better :)) I watched so many breastfeeding guides to help my wife when she was facing difficulty and frustration and your simple tips and practical demonstrations really helped :)
I had cracked nipples the first week of breastfeeding. I thought it'll get better but now at 7 weeks my nipples cracked again. Breastfeeding has been painful all through. I'm a first time mum. I'll try this and I'm so grateful
Hope you find some relief! If not - it would be worth seeing an IBCLC in your local area and also have your baby's tongue function assessed for tongue tie :)
Thank you for detailed explanation. I have been having painful breastfeeding experience from last 1 month. I tried looking for solutions on google, watched several videos, read many articles and blogs, but was unable to understand what was going wrong. You just saved me from so much pain. Thanks a ton. You are an angel 👼
Ohh My God… This is a saviour…. I tried everything to understand nose to nipple n chin to lip… but not understood a thing.. thank you so much for actually explaining it.. it worked like wondr after trying for one day… now i know how it feels to breastfeed without pain… ❤❤ All those who are reading the comment keep trying thr sandwich thing n this.. you will do it 😊
I have a 20-day old new born and I have found the breastfeeding challenging. I have tried the latching technique you recommended~ It’s make so much sense and it’s very practical. I am able to follow the video and have a better baby latching. Thank you for the video~!
Hands down the most helpful video I’ve found. I’ve breastfed 3 babies and I just had my 4th. I never understood why people said breastfeeding shouldn’t hurt because it always has for at least the first 3 weeks for me. I always thought I had a good latch but I think I eventually did..not from the beginning. I refused to deal with pain again, and my fourth baby has been struggling with a shallow latch on one breast only, which has been painful and frustrating. This video has saved my sanity!
This was an absolute game changer for me. Thank you so much, I am using these tips now and I no longer have toe curling pain when my baby latches. My nipples are starting to heal. The only problem I am having is getting comfortable since I don’t start with him on a pillow now and it’s tough to keep him launched while trying to push pillows under him. Any suggestions?
@@amandabarnard1344 that’s great that it’s helping you! If it’s easier to add some support before you can, but aim to just have it under your wrist/hand and not behind his head. I love using a rolled bath towel for this, makes a perfect sausage shaped prop which can just be under your wrist/arm but doesn’t get in the way of his head. Or once you’ve got him latched just recline back in the chair - that way gravity helps to hold him close and you don’t need the additional support :)
@ thanks. Now that has some time has gone by is back to toe curling pain when he latches and my nipples are hurting constantly again. Not sure what changed from when I first tried this, it’s weird because i feel like I’m still doing the same thing 😞
This is the video I’ve been looking for! I have seen 4 different lactation consultants. They’ve all tried to explain how to get a deeper latch but it just wasn’t computing for me. I was at my wits end before I watched this video. I just tried these techniques and had my first feed without pain. Thank you so much!
Wow best video ever! I have bought several classes and none of them have come close to providing the latch example that you did. I was so close to giving up after 9 weeks and now I think we can keep going. Thank you thank you thank you
I have been researching so much and getting lots of support from who ever will give it. This is easily the best video I have come across. Your tips are really easy to process and visualise and understand. I am sat eagerly awaiting my baby waking up from their nap so I can put them into practice! Thank you so much. The triangle example and timing the latch based on the head wiggle are game changers
Thank you so much! This video saved me, I was having a hard time with latch and it was so painful and I was getting so frustrated but I watched your video then latched him on and for the very first time I fed him with no pain!!!!😊
This has been so helpful! My question is what do I do about babies hands? I am trying to get him in close but he just won’t remove his hands near his face and when he does I get a 2 second window. Any suggestions?
This is super common. Newborn babies are like little springs and it’s a gradual process for them to uncoil (and bring hands/legs away from their midline) over the first few months. Bring babies hands around your br3ast (like bub is giving you a hug). Sometimes you’ll have to fight against their resistance but they’ll then sit with one hand around breast and the other resting on top (ish!)
Thanks 🙏 first video I saw and really understood what to do. My baby has been latching on but not as deep and he is always super fussy. Tried your technique and it took a few tries but worked like a charm 😉
Thank you so much for saving my breastfeeding journey. FTM and have been feeding for 5 weeks with excruciating pain. Midwife said bubs latch was perfect and I may just have sensitive nipples which was causing my pain. Watched this video and had my first pain free feed. Clearly bubs latch was never deep enough. Have kept applying this technique to every feed and I am officially healed and loving breastfeeding now.
Its really really useful video. Since almost 2-3 weeks i was feeding painful.. But just after watching this lovely video its just wow😍❤thanks a lot n lots❤.. God bless you
This makes a lot of since!!! I’m gonna try this next feed. It’s not painful. But we’ve had our ties revised and he’s still not feeding efficiently imo and I think it’s due to not deep enough
Wow did you ever save my life. I’m 5 days postpartum with cracked and bleeding nipples from unknowingly slipping into nipple feeding. I almost cried out of relief when my baby latched correctly for the first time and I realized that it doesn’t have to hurt so badly
You just save my nipples ❤ thank you finally I was able to understand after several private lactation consults, I think you explained the same, but in a way I was able to understand and catch the position!! I’m really thankful to found your video 🙏🏼
Thanks a lot for the tip to slide the baby down. My newborn has just 5days old and I’m in pain 😢 Tried everything here in Brazil, now I’ll try your tips. ❤🎉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you for this video. My baby is 7 days old and having a hard time latching. I will be having him checked for a tongue tie but this video really helped me to see how I have been doing it wrong. Thank you. I’m desperate to make breastfeeding work for my baby and I. It’s so stressful and hard to navigate when it’s not working out well. I have cried so much as I fear not being able to breastfeed him. His inability to latch and relying on pumping plus stress seems to now be affecting my supply too. I will use the advice you have given and am confident this advice was needed for me to better help him latch.
As a mum of three I completely understand all of that stress - I'm sure you're doing brilliantly! I have a couple of other videos on latching techniques so if you're still struggling be sure to check those out! Hope things have improved for you now :)
Hi i am trying to use your technique of sliding baby down and feeding, it worked for first time on right side but on left side pains alot. Baby is toung tied very slightly. And high palate. Is there any technique which doesnt hurt. I believe baby does rub on hard palate and pinch alot. Baby is 9 weeks
My daughter is 11 days old, she had a late diagnosis of a tongue tie. We got it fixed but i know her latch has been really bad. Its painful 😢. At her next feed ill try the chin trick.
Loved this video because it is the first video out of hundreds on youtube that tell you actually what is happening when there is a poor latch! thank you!
You are my hero ❤😅 My little girl was born one week ago and breastfeeding was going more and more painful, even I though that I was positioning her correctly (following nurses advice and other videos). At this point, each time that I put her on a breast I yell for a moment 😂, and then it keeps hurting. I was worried that I had to stop breastfeeding and your explanation is saving me. I just put her on my breast following your advice and it hurts a lot less already. Now I am sure that she will get used to the new position and will start to open more her mouth. I am really looking forward to enjoy totally when she is drinking, it's such a beautiful moment truly 🩷 Thank you so much 🥰🥰🥰
Hey Thanks thanks thanks a million times Saw this video in the morning Applied the slide the baby thing And voila After so many days that it was not painful and I could see that my baby is having enough milk
This video is really helpful and seems to help a lot of mothers. However, when I slide the baby as mentioned, he doesn’t latch on by himself, I have to help him to latch on by bringing him little upwards so that he can latch on. Is there anything that you can suggest so that he can take nipple by himself as he seems to stay only under the nipple.
Hi. So if your baby is struggling to open their mouth wide enough there's a few things which might be going on. 1) you might have slid them around too far, it should only be 1-2cm. 2) it may be that your baby has tension in the muscles of their neck and jaw preventing them from opening a wide mouth - take a look at this video :) ruclips.net/video/t_iYSaXwrKM/видео.htmlsi=Y_Yx4fIzcODSH4_d
@@alissabrownibclc thank you for the tips. Your videos started coming up on my youtube since day 1 but I didn’t know your videos will help me this much until 2 days ago. Thank you so much.
Hi mam...I am a one month feeding mother...I am trying to breastfeed this method..while start to nurse he was crying a lot and his hands are placing my breast and his mouth..what should to do?
Hi Alissa! I love your video about fixing your latch. I am a breastfeeding counsellor and am sharing this with all of the women that I support. I tried clicking on your link to the sandwich technique and it says that the video is no longer available
@@alissabrownibclc Thank you Alissa. I think your videos are simply fantastic! And the breastfeeding mums who I share them with do too. Thanks so much for these wonderful resources 💗
@@janepiot4138 That's great to hear, thanks Jane! :) If you have any idea of things which would be helpful to share with the mums you work with or that you'd like to see videos on let me know :)
Genuine question…could my actual nipples be pointing too far to outwards? Little one was born 20th July, hospital staff gave me similar tips/techniques and said I was doing it well but the pain was and still is excruciating, exactly as you describe how they would be chewing/sucking. I tried your technique today, specifically the slide back and put in but feel if I slide back then the nipple itself is landing automatically on his hard palate so he can get his mouth latched at the bottom of the areola. hope that makes sense! Feeling really rubbish about myself and would love some more advice before I go to the support clinic tomorrow. Thank you
Sorry to hear you’ve had such a challenging time so far. I’m struggling to picture exactly what you’re talking about but if it’s landing near hard palate then baby definitely isn’t taking a deep enough latch. Is baby opening their mouth wide to latch? You might like to check out my video on tongue tie and also on exercises to help latch. Depending on your birth experience muscular restriction for baby might be impacting too :)
What can i do to encourage a baby open widely when she is near the nose and that have a good latch? If she is hold in that position what she does is suck in the part she has near and doesn’t try to open to get the nipple
@@anacastro5137 firstly is to always make sure you’re not putting pressure on the back of her head with your hand/arm. She needs to be able to tip her head back to open a wide mouth. Secondly, it may be that she can’t due to tension in her neck/jaw. This video has some tips you might find useful EASY exercises to help your baby take a DEEP LATCH ruclips.net/video/t_iYSaXwrKM/видео.html
Where i am facing diffculty I'm unable to hold my baby in cross craddle position(unable to hold her from back of her neck). I have to put on her on the nursing pillow due to which she couldnt create that triangle position.
So if you’re struggling with baby’s weight supporting with your hand first thing to do is let baby sit on an angle, with their bottom/legs on your lap, so you’re just supporting head and torso. Next lean yourself back as soon as baby has latched so gravity takes some of the weight - then put a rolled towel or a pillow under your arm, so baby’s head is still free
I'm a new mom and really struggling with breastfeeding. I'm currently using nipple shield otherwise baby won't drink and I'm having really really horrible pain.
Try this technique too - ruclips.net/video/d7_6oyABoq8/видео.htmlsi=g1-JAuy91MUDrtqg It would also be worth having your baby assessed for tongue restrictions if they’re reliant on shields
I’m giving up, Brest feeding came easy with my last hood but the new child i just had is a different story, almost 4 weeks later and I am in so much pain I’m crying. I feel bad because it’s the only thing that soothes my 4 week old but I can’t take the pain another day.
I watched both videos twice and just latched my 2 week old baby and immediately had a better experience. Thank you. 🙏🏾 I was about to give up and go with bottles. This helped so much!!!
Thank you. Is there anyway to show different positions and how you’re getting baby to latch? It worked for me on day 1. When I tried to do it again yesterday I didn’t have the same luck. I gave up and have been pumping the last 24 hours due to sore boobs and frustration.
So after some more time.... I did get a better latch following your advice, but I can't get him to do it regularly. And when I do get him to latch deeper, I can't get him to stay latched deep. He is 2 months and his latch isn't painful but he isn't efficient and his latch doesn't look like what you see in pictures
That’s great that you managed to get a deeper latch. If baby isn’t able to maintain it, it’s likely to be due to muscular tension making it uncomfortable for baby to keep their mouth open wide. Check out my video on this :)
So it’s normal for newborns to be like this to a point, and it eases over time - however some baby’s have significantly more tension than others (which can be compounded by prolonged labour or birth trauma). Check out these tips- ruclips.net/video/t_iYSaXwrKM/видео.htmlsi=Mlp_KQM53j7IkvyD You may also wish to take your baby to a paediatric osteopath who can help release this tension :)
For larger babies most mums will switch to a cradle hold (same arm as breast, hand on baby’s back/shoulder blades). You can still position them in the same way, sliding away from breast so nose and nipple align :)
I’ve never commented on a video before but this is amazing! Little one is feeding better straight away! That said, she is quite heavy and I have large breasts so I can’t hold her for long in the cross cradle hold. When I try to let go of the breast she’s feeding on to use that arm for more support the weight of my breast pulls the nipple out of her mouth. Do you have any tips on how to navigate this?
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment - it's honestly so lovely to hear that this was helpful for you! So you might find a stargazing hold works well - position bub so she's almost sitting next to you, head near your breasts, feet towards your back. Support behind back and shoulder blades (same as in cross cradle) but place a sausage shaped pillow or a rolled towel/blanket underneath your hand to support her weight. Youll hold her with the same hand as breast you're feeding on and then you'll have the other hand to support/shape the breast. You can also try using a small hand towel or face washer rolled into a sausage shape and placing the roll under your breast to help lift it.
Hello, what if the baby is restless like grunting, stiffness in hands and not opening mouth for good latch. Been in pain for a month already. Kindly guide me.
Could a bad latch cause slow weight gain? I am not in pain but do uave white tips on mynnipple and it looks like a lipstick sometimes . Is this a bad latch ?
Yes it absolutely can. A shallow latch means baby won’t remove milk as effectively and will often surf the letdown (swallowing well for a few minutes during letdown and then slowing/falling asleep). The signs you mentioned indicate a shallow latch - try this technique and also check out my video on signs your baby is feeding effectively ruclips.net/video/d7_6oyABoq8/видео.htmlsi=cmGvg42vqBLflJ6v
My baby is preterm 34 +3 and now he is 2.5 months old he is not opening jis mouth wide and when i try flipple method as well he is not opening his jaws
What if I don’t have nipples that harden like that? Kind of like flat nipples? I understand that they need to feed from the breast but if my nipples can’t hit the inside of their mouths where it should how do I fix that?
Yes you’re right that what’s important is a deep mouthful of breast. The main challenge mums have with flatter nipples is that baby isn’t getting that stimulation in the roof of their mouth to trigger their sucking reflex. You can try using breast pump/everter for a few minutes before feeding or manual stimulation. The other really helpful part is getting the angle right - try using my sandwich technique, I’ll link below and really exaggerating nipple point up to the roof of baby’s mouth as they latch.
4th day feeding and feels like giving up. My nipples are super painful that i had to buy some nipple shields (but haven't tried em). I feel confident to try this technique but am too scared as my nipples are grazed and sore. Should i try this before the nipple shield or heal with nipple shield then try this?
Oh I'm so sorry to hear feeding has been so painful for you. I'd suggest as well as what you've seen in the video you also try this technique ---- ruclips.net/video/d7_6oyABoq8/видео.htmlsi=GQGdvl-VL41NqG9b See if you're able to achieve a comfortable feed with that technique. There’s a lot of info saying the same thing baby should open wide, but you can’t freakin make a newborn do that! So it’s super frustrating to hear
Did it work?
Yes it did! And with time, her latch has gotten much better since she’s gotten stronger. I’m glad we stuck out the beginning, our breastfeeding experience has been lovely after that first 3-4 weeks. You can do it!
@kylieanne1234 thank you! About to be induced woth my second and I really want breastfeeding to work out this time. God bless

This is honestly the best video I have seen and I have seen a lot. I have a 6w baby and after two weeks had a deep wound in which I could only resolve with antibiotics. Hope you find some relief! If not - it would be worth seeing an IBCLC in your local area and also have your baby's tongue function assessed for tongue tie :)

.s,
Hands down the most helpful video I’ve found.
Thanks for taking the time to comment - and it's so lovely to hear that it's been helpful for you! :)
Just sent this video to my daughter. This was a Godsend. Thank you!!!!

Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your response.
@zibaburrow2476 you’re welcome!

Thank you so much for saving my breastfeeding journey. FTM and have been feeding for 5 weeks with excruciating pain.

This video has some tips you might find useful
EASY exercises to help your baby take a DEEP LATCH
ruclips.net/video/t_iYSaXwrKM/видео.html
It’s just really hard because my baby is so aggressive at the breast so he shakes his head around so much that he can’t latch good
Where i am facing diffculty I'm unable to hold my baby in cross craddle position(unable to hold her from back of her neck).
I am gathering courage to try this technique.. i hope it will be really helpful for me too..😢
Good luck! :)

I’m giving up, Brest feeding came easy with my last hood but the new child i just had is a different story, almost 4 weeks later and I am in so much pain I’m crying. I feel bad because it’s the only thing that soothes my 4 week old but I can’t take the pain another day.
Hope you’ve managed to get some support from an IBCLC - there are lots of things which can cause pain but pretty much always fixable :)
Thank you so much!! Wow, my life and my newborns are changed

I watched both videos twice and just latched my 2 week old baby and immediately had a better experience. Thank you. 🙏🏾 I was about to give up and go with bottles. This helped so much!!!
That’s amazing to hear - well done!
Thank you. Is there anyway to show different positions and how you’re getting baby to latch?
It worked for me on day 1. When I tried to do it again yesterday I didn’t have the same luck. I gave up and have been pumping the last 24 hours due to sore boobs and frustration.
I've seen this explained so many times ! I keep trying it and keep getting the same latch. I think I FINALLY got a deeper latch!
Wow, this video is SO helpful!
Thanks! 🙏🏻
But how to apply theae tips in a craddle hold?
What do to with a boxer baby that has his fists in front of her face and is really tensed ?
So it’s normal for newborns to be like this to a point, and it eases over time - however some baby’s have significantly more tension than others (which can be compounded by prolonged labour or birth trauma).
Check out these tips- ruclips.net/video/t_iYSaXwrKM/видео.htmlsi=Mlp_KQM53j7IkvyD
You may also wish to take your baby to a paediatric osteopath who can help release this tension :)
What do i do, if my baby is weighing 5.2 kgs! How is it possible to hold him so easily as you are showing in the video, please help?
The signs you mentioned indicate a shallow latch - try this technique and also check out my video on signs your baby is feeding effectively

You're welcome!
