- Hey guys! Doing a quick run-down of how I made this cake that looks like a tombstone. Fondant-free and almost completely frosting aside from the chocolate roses.
Leave a comment below if you'd like to see a detailed video of any particular steps.
The cake was my chocolate cake with my chocolate American buttercream as the filling. The outside was a vanilla American buttercream dyed gray with a few drops of black food coloring.

Great, fun idea for a birthday cake! Love the way you made the tombstone look aged!
This was a great tutorial! Super easy to follow and loved the tips too.
Buttercreme recipe? As well as how you got that perfect shade of gray?
My client asked for American buttercream, and luckily that takes on color really well! I don't have a recipe video on RUclips, but I do have one on TikTok. You can find me on all socials at the same username. You can find it on my TikTok named "American 'crusting' Buttercream Recipe". In regards to the color, I just use "Jet Black" Americolor gel food coloring. If the color looks a bit purple (black is really just an extremely dark purple color for food coloring), you can add just a tiny speck of yellow to counteract the purple. Add the black in little by little. You can always add more but can't take the color away. Keep adding and mixing until you're happy with it! Hopefully this helps!
What size cake board did you use?
What did you use for the letters?
I used fondant and cut them freehanded with an exact-o-knife! You can also use cut out letters from copy paper to use as templates
