    My dad always used a utility knife to sharpen his pencils. He would put the tip of the pencil on the bench then shape the wood tip. He would follow up by cutting the lead.

      What prompted me to look at using a knife was I was looking at some expensive sharpeners and thought there had to be a cheaper option.

      @@scottsackett8790 Thanks for answer and heart! You can look for older 100+ years old pencil sharpeners and see that they are much more elaborate and sophisticated. It was some time since I read up on it, buit from memory - Likely because the pencil then was a much more appreciated and new invention. At one point it actually was considered a great millitary secret, the graphite lead I believe it was called back then (this is before they learned to mix graphite with clay to make pencil lead). The mines were a closely guarded secret.
