People might argue about whether Al is the greatest soul singer singer that ever lived..but I doubt whether there was one who sang with more imagination....and certainly no popular singer played with the textures of the human voice as much as the Reverend...Al never recorded a bad album because he rarely aimed for timely like many others Al always went for timeless...There is a track on the Soul Survivor album which proves the man was a genius...'You Know and I know' is a simple song, no question and in the hands of anyone else would be a throwaway..the first half of the song is nice, saved by maybe the most beautiful voice of the rock era...but then we get to the passage that goes "Cause without your love so what can I say?
Need you more and more each day
Talk to you and I try to explain
    try to explain
Explain it all .........and time stops...the whole passage is so perfectly thought out...he starts low...gorgeous...he softens and retreats a little with "Need you more and more each day"...sets us up for something special with "Talk to you and".....and then it happens....its difficult to describe but.."try to explain ,explain it all ".....is so astonishingly beautiful, it tattoos itself on your soul....effing miraculous......President Pat you are right to call him one of the greatest that ever lived...he's right up there with Sinatra and Billie Holiday and Ella.....I thought the man might be finished but no, the other day he dropped a cover of Everybody Hurts so we can rejoice again
