I had to fix the brake handle on my 72 super beetle, the button was pushed way in so I had to reset the cats paw! I discovered the root cause, the cables were not running under the shoes on the back of the handle, they must have popped off and were just running under the pivot pin! The previous owner apparently didn’t understand what was wrong and had run the adjustment nuts all the way in to the end of the threads! So putting the cables on correctly after backing the nuts off and resetting the cats paw, it all works well again!
Oh wow!!! I never had that happen before. I’m actually going to pin your comment to the top so other see that. Thank you for taking the time to comment and explain that situation I truly appreciate it.
31:42 Karma led me here!!! I just had my handbrake lever "fall apart" and now I know why. I also now know how to fix it! I bow at your feet oh Master. Thanks mate, great instructions. Cheers from Australia.
Just had this happen on my 72 Beetle the other day while on a drive around the block. This video saved me a lot of head-scratching and kept me from procrastinating on yet another project! fixed and back in action in about 45 min. Great video!
Well, this video has sure helped me. When i got my beetle 2 years ago It didnt have the hand brake working. I still havent fixed it but you just showed me how. thank you!
Slade, another great video. I really learn a lot watching your site and I enjoy your style of presentation. You take care and a shout out to your wife, who comes across as a supporting part of your life. Thanks
Thank you so much my friend for the kind words. I truly appreciate that especially that you took out the time to leave a comment. Thank you for being part of this community.
Nice job again Tony, that will help a lot off guy’s with that specific problem. O a tip, when your done painting with a rattle can, flip it over and spray the paint out off the tube until it’s clear. No more blocked nuzzle.
Two things you should mention when installing the handle, the notch in the toothed part needs to hook onto the top edge of the tunnel and be sure the cables route under the shoes on the bottom rear of the brake lever. I figured that all out trial and error! Great video!
Thank you sir! I was pretty much refurbishing my handle so I showed how it function. Probably would’ve been a good idea to do the complete install the handle. I had to remove it again for floor work lol Thank you.
release button came jumping out today (applied the e-brake with brakes still out of adjustment and the paw jumped the top tooth) and I immediately thought “I’m pretty sure Slade just posted a video on this…” TheSe videos on these small odd jobs are just as useful as the more involved processes- appreciate your time and knowledge as always!
Slade, I really appreciate all the detail. I'm a bit of a perfectionist I'm one of those while I'm there kind of guys. There's no sense in leaving something it may come back to haunt you. I'm excited about the red with the black. That tells me that the body works going to have to be primo. Can't wait great video as always. 💪🏼💯👍🏻💙
Ha! Ironically I plan to remove my emergency handle because the prior owner painted it red and I want to go back to factory black. Thank you for this how to video….looks easy enough to do!
Awesome video. I like how you go into details in what you do. I will be referring to this video when I do this. Love the red. It’s gonna look awesome with the interior
nice video great job explaining everything. that thing looks almost new. mine was cracked so i needed to weld that barrol at the bottom back in. im a fan of heating the metal befor paint too i think it helps cure the paint.
Nice video Slades. You make it look easy. I did my brake handle on my ‘68 and it seemed harder than how you did it on your ‘68. Keep up the videos, I really like them. Jim S
Great video ,, My 70 “Crack Pipe” Impound Yard beetle has the rod sprung out . I thought something might be missing . I’ll reassemble tomorrow with new cables . Thank you
Does the hand brake lever have to come out of the car to reengage the car paw or can it be left in if alls I want to do is flip the cat paw back around ?? Cheers.
I found that my e brake did not work. But I found the small handles on each side that controls the heater box flaps seemed to alow the handle to stay up and stop the car 🤔

Thanks my friend! Believe it or not I really do that. To make sure the nozzles cleaned out. My dad taught me that many years ago.
@@SladesVWBeetle he taught you well then.
I save all the nozzles when empty. A can of quality rattle isn’t cheap these days.

Should you adjust the screws while the handle is say 3 clicks up then when you pull it to say 6 clicks everything is locked up?

using a heat gun between coats works great...i do it all the time
but i would never use rustolly paint...ever!!!!!! takes to long to dry!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for chiming in, I truly appreciate it.
shoulda used appliance epoxy, that stuff is cheap and really tough
Maybe I should look into that, that is not a bad idea thank you so much for chiming in.
