Love your selections Kenny; loves Miles since the day my father introduced me to his music when i was six years old. On a Sunday afternoon I would say dad play the trumpet guy Miles and my dad would say okay! My mother would just shake her head and say give the boy a book and stop spoiling him with all that jazz!
Hi! Nice collection, man. I never get tired of looking at Miles releases, and i never get enough listening to them. It´s pure magic. He was one of the greatest - in any genre. Just a genius. I have so many favorites, and they´re changing from day to day. Right now my favorite is Miles Smiles.
A particular tune that Miles played that moves me to tears almost every time is “It Never Entered My Mind” with I think Red Garland on piano, that perfect repeating figure he plays under Miles in the verse. I tear up just thinking about it. Achingly beautiful
Great discussion of such a sublime body of work. I like that Porgy and Bess got 3 showings here- it is often overlooked. I generally do not like greatest hits type collections, but all my life I have deeply loved what they put together on that Miles Davis Greatest Hits record. Workin, Steamin, Cookin, and Relaxin - always seem to create the perfect vibe when I reach for one of them. But what I really want to discuss is that Live at Fillmore (East, June 1970) you have. That takes Bitches Brew into the Amazon jungle and lets it loose. I just never tire of it. Then finally... what I think is your only serious omission... Agartha.
I am obsessed with this period in Miles's great career: "Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings of Miles Davis 1963-1964" especially when George Coleman was on sax!
Duuuuude no George Coleman was by far the worst of davis's saxmen! Sorry but it's true! I often skip his solos when listening to recordings from this period!
Miles Smiles was my favourite at the age of 12 and it still is my favourite. My family, friends, 3 ex-wives all hate the music I love. I discovered Miles Davis when I borrowed Get Up With It from the local library. I found the music perplexing but compelling as it sounded so exotic compared with the music my friends and family preferred. I came to love Get Up With It for Calypso Frelimo and He Loved Him Madly. I have everything Miles recorded and published from 1958 onwards. Multiple masterings of many of the albums. Miles Smiles - that group amazed me the very first time I heard them on Miles Smiles. No other jazz group achieved their level of cohesion, collaboration and relentless creativity. Tony’s drumming is beautiful, herbie playing the right hand only solos sounding more like a horn than a piano. Just subscribed 🙏
I like miles smiles also and you are correct that Tony Williams drumming on that album was fantastic...especially taking into account how young he was at the time. Thank you very much for viewing my video and subscribing to my channel.
Dude crazy u say that. Get Up With It is also my all time fav. I've soaked that album in so much... At this point, my fav track might be Billy Preston ha! I'm also a huge Miles Smiles fan too. Incredible records.
@@ggck.sounds amazing they were made by the same man too and the same Producer! I love Calypso Frelimo especially the last 10 mins when it accellerates from the dub like slow section into an even more frenetic version of the first section
That's my favorite lineup as well. Miles really admired the teamwork of his second great quintet. And Tony Williams was just something else. Really they all were geniuses like the first quartet.
I love miles. I've listened to him about every day for the last 20 years. Call me crazy, but the album I've listened to the most is "Get Up With It". I'm not saying its his best necessarily, but for some reason its the one I go to the most. Dark Magus and Agharta too. That band with mtume and liebman and pete cosey was so friggin baaaad. Artistically most sublime one is maybe the My Funny Valentine/Four and More concert. Love Miles Smiles and Nefertiti too.
Man I love me some Miles! You’re right about the Kind of Blue group. Geez to be a fly on the wall in the studio during those sessions! I have pretty much everything of Miles’ on cd and am starting a vinyl collection. I love your collection Kenny! In a Silent Way is my fav. It has been for decades. Bitches Brew is his masterpiece though for fusion. Thanks for the great video!
Agree with you on In A Silent Way. It is a monumental landmark not just of jazz, but music in general. As much as I love Kind Of Blue, Silent Way often flies under the radar as a “must hear” recording. I have so much respect for it.
Best band alternative. The Quintet: Jazz at Massey Hall Dizzy - trumpet Mingus - bass Bird - alto sax Powell - piano Max - drums When Bud Powell is your weakest link, you have what we call a "Super Group" Bitches Brew and Sketches of Spain are my favorites from Miles Davis.
Stellar Miles collection! My favorite era of MIles is his 60's quintet, with a lineup that's on par with the Kind of Blue lineup in my opinion. Wayne Shorter is one of my favorite composers of all time, so his contributions add to my love of that group. My four favorite Miles albums are Bitches Brew (first jazz album I ever bought), Kind of Blue, Sorcerer and Miles Smiles.
nice collection of Miles!! My favorite of his is a tie between Kind of Blue and Miles Ahead. Yeah, Miles did not want no white girl on his cover. All of the 3 big ones he made with Gil Evans are just SO SO beautiful. Some might not know that on the Porgy and Bess LP, there is a song that was not in the opera and its inclusion is a stroke of genius since without it, the album might be seen to lag a bit and suffer a bit from sameness
Great pick, and I would say another one is the LP "In a Silent Way" I got the sessions in the box set, and had the album input the tracks: Splashdown, Ascent, or Ghetto Walk and split up the tracks In a Silent Way and Its About That Time and not duplicate them then it would have ranked higher. In Miles's box sets, there's this unreleased material and you're like how in the world was this not released when the album came out. But Miles was right once again in his autobiography.
@@kennysaudiophilerecordreviews I have had the Jack Johnson album for at least 45 years but something made me start listening to that and In a Silent Way again and I felt like I was hearing both albums for the first time again. I went through a period, a couple of months recently where I was listening to both every day. I think I was driving my husband crazy but looked forward to him leaving the apartment so I could put them on again.

for me the 5 records that got me were milestones (never really knew of miles before always assumed he always did like slow ballad stuff which didn't appeal to me, this record floored me) a tribute to jack johnson which was completely unexpected and unbelievably funky, followed by live evil which was absolutly incredible to listen to the first time (that part during inamorata before you need to flip the record over when keith jarret plays that thing still makes my hair stand on end absolutly incredible). miles smiles which is my favourite record of his second great quintet. I truly think that the group with ron tony wayne herbie was his greatest band its aboslutly incredible listenig to that sort of mystical, medieval sounding quintet pushing the boundaries of what a band could sound like. tony williams is my favourite drummer because of that record the way he makes the ensemble sound like its swirling, incredibly powerful and moving drummer rest in peace. last but not least as it's my absolutle favourite record of miles is in a silent way. i'd never been more enamored by a record before to the extent that i needed to get the complete sessions as well so i could learn how such an album was even made. it was incredible have no words to describe how i felt listening to that for the first time
I totally agree with you about Tony Williams, he was a phenomenal drummer for the group at such a young age, a prodigy for sure....I love the detail of your comments 👍 The Jack Johnson LP was great with John Mclaughlin. Thank you very much for viewing my video 😄
Yes, I can well understand your opinion. For me personally, there is no 'best'. It depends strongly on my mood, sometimes a disc from the 50s, then again something newer like 'The man with the horn'... I like your videos and your enthusiasm. I ordered 'Round Midnight' by Herbie Hancock because of you ;) Continue to enjoy high quality music!
Thanks for your video. I’ve tried and tried, but it’s hard for me to get into Bitches Brew. The 2 first tracks are tough to get through. Sketches of Spain and Kind of Blue are my favorites.

All the ones with Gil Evans are amazing even Quiet Nights. ESP is a favourite and Nefertiti. Impossible to pick a favourite. Steamin and Working are pretty close. Ive always had a soft spot for Steamin for some reason
