It honestly looks super fun as long as you stay close to shore. I wouldn't try it where I live off the coast of SC though. Our closest artificial reef is like 2 miles out, and these coastal waters are murky, turbulent, and conditions can change fairly quickly.
I never realized ocean kayak fishing was even a thing or safe. I'd be afraid of getting caught in a current I can't get out of, large sharks, large boats, sudden storms, USOs, and unknown marine cosmic horrors.
well....you should check out the video where things went completely sideways on a trip to the CA Central Coast. and i agree - everyone needs to be very careful and prepared when dealing with the ocean.
A great place to get your "feet wet" would be a lake like Pyramid Lake off the 5 fwy. I'm thinking of hosting an event there where we could practice capsizing/reentry, fish finder tech, and single malt tech.
Hi, this is coming from a guy who does not Target halibut, but here are my thoughts. For halibut, I don't think it makes a huge difference where you launch. I think you might have just as much luck Fishing the Flats around the wrecks or The Reefs in either venue. Halibut obviously not fish that show up on the sonar, and I typically do not have the patience for them.
Thanks. The Lexa is a nice reel - I have one and like it a lot. For the rod recommendation, I'll assume that you're a beg/intermediate fisherman like myself, and you're looking for a do-it-all rod. That means you'll want a rod to cast surface lures *and* maybe do some bottom jigging in deeper water (200'-300') with weights as heavy as say...8 oz. So here's what I'd look for (general description): 7.5 ft in length / rated for 15-30 lb line / rated to throw lures in the 1-4 oz range. I won't name specific makes or models, but the "type" of rod that fits that description is a burly Swimbait rod. The rod in my arsenal that fits that description is a St. Croix Mojo Bass rod, and it's the rod that I would take out if I could only take one.
Thanks for the kind words. My current fish finder is a model that is one generation older than this one - Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 64Cv fish finder amzn.to/36GvwuT
hi, i should mention that there aren't any canyons out of MDR that are within easy reach. Redondo Beach is another story, though. i'll typically focus on the ledges first - in water that's 180'-250'. that seems to be the sweet spot. there are rockfish in much deeper water, but it's tougher to fish deeper water because it's a lot of work to send a rig (or especially a jig) down to 300'+++. i have a video that details how i target fish out of Redondo Beach.
Yeah what's up with staging regatta markers over a fish haven? They got the whole friggin ocean to race over and they gotta set up right over a fishing spot? Same thing happened to me at the same spot. I was pretty pissed and was going to file a complaint with the USCG, but like you said it's all about the money. On another note... I know it adds a little more distance to the trip, but you can also launch from Mothers Beach and take your time and avoid the launch traffic at the ramp. Also... the tide flood tubes that dump into the marina from the Venice canals are a good place to troll by when the tide is going out.
Lol - as you mentioned, it does seem unfair that with all that ocean, they set up their route right over a fishing spot. But in the end, we don't need anymore aggro in this world, and we all need to get along as best we can. Btw, I know exactly what you're talking about re the flood tubes - I once saw some *big* fish working some kind of bait around there. I couldn't see what they were, but they weren't little fish :)
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 absolutely right on about getting along as best we can. I love everything - even sailboats LOL! Thanks and hope to see you out on the water.
Well, I'm going a little stir-crazy like everyone else, but we have to stay safe - not only for ourselves, but for the benefit of others. I'll post a trip as soon as all the craziness is over.
Great video man. Just a great video! So helpful. Thanks for sharing with us. Excuse my ignorance but why did that guy released that calico and the sand bass? They looked legal to me. But I really don’t know a lot about the size limits Thanks again for the video man keep it up.
Hi, I probably shouldn't answer for them, but I rarely keep fish myself. I get my kicks out of the "process" of finding them and enjoy the scouting aspects more than the fish catching action. That's why my videos are mostly about theory, rather than fish-catching action. If I do keep fish, it'll typically be the smallish or mid-sized fish - the big ones go back to create more fish. L-Train was saying that Calico Bass grow very slowly, so that could have been a 10 year old fish.
That was my PB fish for calico bass. The legal size is 14 inches and that measured 20 inches. Never have i seen a calico that big. It can be legally keeped but it was a trophy fish. I let him go for the opportunity to let someone else in the future catch him. Hopefully a kid, a rookie, or an elderly. That can be someone elses PB.
Marine forecast are sometimes misleading. I've gone out of Long Beach in my boat with conditions you've described and couldn't even stand in my boat! I do miss kayak fishing because I could get into places the boat couldn't.
I just love the autonomy that a kayak allows. Some of them crowded party boats bring out the worst in people. I generally am willing to pay a little money to get away from most people :)
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 My GF and I went fishing in Alaska six years ago. We stayed at a lodge and fished with the same two other people and four different captains for a week. lol at getting chased off by more money, more boats and more people. Sounds like trying to fish in Newport on weekends. I've float tubed MDR but havn't yaked it yet, launched from the same boat launch in this video off Fiji Way. I work up the street and know most of the boat mechanics in that harbor especially at the boat yard next to the launch ramp.
Yup - I had forgotten how much boat traffic there is at MDR. MDR is a little more upscale than Redondo - you generally won't find people taking power naps in the porta-potties. I've always enjoyed float tubing. If i could take all my electronics, I might do more of it.
Hunting harbor at the end of edinger and alamitos bay by Belmont shores the people are pretty friendly and the traffic isn't too bad unless it a holiday weekend.
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 me either, I've seen guys stock up on lizard fish then head for the mouth of the harbor to use them as bait for butts. I've had more luck surf fishing the Belmont beach side lol
