All newer cars are weaker (unless the manufacturer tuned them up to compensate) and quieter than in 2018 because of the now mandatory opf/ppf filters. 2018 (and older) models of sporty cars will most likely keep their value better because of this.

The problem with these VW competitors is that it is barely just as fast as the current Golf R. BMW and Mercedes competitors are actually heavier than the current Golf R. Brix X yeah, just black everything out that would be the only way haha. I’d probably hold off to see what the MK8 are is like to be fair. The R has done well seen as it’s 5 years old now, against a brand new BM.
@@poddyea2k9 ive driven both, i owned a scirocco R and am partial towards DSG boxes and you will not choose the Golf unless it's financially MUCH cheaper. Interior of the BMW is out of its league. Not even close. Driving fast corners is chalk and cheese. The beemer feels neutral and light, you can go too fast into a corner and even feel like you can make the rear come around with a bit of lift off oversteer. The golf is understeer and that is all.
I would say the golf can only win by price and nose design. thats about it. I would still prefer the DSG on principal to the Aisin, even the ZF but difference here is not that great. The Aisin box gives that good old fashion shove on upshifts.
Arno yeah but the BM looks like shit. No way am I parting with 35k and the car looks like shit. That’s my opinion.
The issue with any other these comparisons is clear......who says the Golf R has been ‘class leader for 5 years’. Not me anyway. So, it’s subjective and always will be. People should just go and test drive cars and choose for themselves!!!! A novel idea....
I like how he says...... "the class leader for half a decade!!!"...... half a decade is only 5 years, which is not long at all..... plus I agree, who says it has been the class leader?
I've got the estate, so from the perspective, the R has no competition (save for SEAT).
How did that front end of that BMW get the A-OK.. rear looks good too but that front face only a mother could love.
Excellent review - great channel.
Re the cars - what you want is a 240i rather than this FWD 4-pot pig
The golf is the better car not because of performance, it’s just the best bang for you buck at the end of the day. Every time, that’s the real reason it’s been on top
Conclusion seems to be a bit of a non sequitur, given the reviews he'd just delivered.
Both great cars 135i is so much nicer looking inside and out so I'd go for that
The Golf R and the S3 are the same manufacturers
Cyril Young no shit
so 135 having a 2.0 not a 3.5 and front wheel drive? It also lacks the distinctive styling not sure about that. The other makes all went front wheel drive a generation ago, so may be good reason, however think the rear drive thing became bmws USP although buyers may not care, its the that do that may be make it the car to have
Nice car, love New M235i GC . This cars are not old school BMW, bat BMW need cars like that . If you need more fun, you can still go with m2,m3,m4... :)
Is the dash of the BMW classic or old-fashioned??? This car looks better in real for me. But a different color would help. But the R would do it for me too....
Only 2.5k price difference? In eastern europe the difference is like 15k €...
R is around 40k with a bunch of options and an 135i is like 55k similar specs
It's £250 not £2,500.
Rohan W omg
Having owned the previous M135i I’m happy I ticked that straight 6 RWD hot hatch box when I did. The new ones proportions make it look like a crossover but understand why they went with fwd for the vanilla models - rear legroom was a joke and people just bought in to the brand and didn’t care / know it was RWD.
Personally i would wait for the new Golf R rather than this M135i...it’s just so ugly
Trust me the R is more fun to drive especially in drift mode!!!
what do you mean by "gloopy"?
Remember folks those prices quoted are basic starting prices, walk into any showroom see the car you'd really want with extras you'd be paying 45k for the m135i and the new Golf r will take you near 50k
The M140 had everything it needed to dethrone the Golf R, this doesn't and its ugly as hell. What a shame!
I like BMW's, but I think that VAG are better at making 4 cylinder engines. I will stick to my M140i for now.
Good video, but the M140 was already a better hot hatch than the Golf R
In the dry. Xdrive never imported into the UK unfortunately.
@@sparkford04 regardless of Xdrive. The BMW M140i is a much more powerful car than these 2 hideous 2 litre 4 pot fart cans which offer nothing different to the hot hatch segment. Current M140i owners will never swap to a slower M135i soul less, FWD bias, quiet emission friendly sensible car now will they... beggers belief.
M140i owners will still want that ultimate driving experience and therefore upgrade to 2016 M3/M4 or M5's or jump ship to AMG.
For 20% of the time on dry straight roads in UK . On Twisty, Damp & Icy A,B & C UK roads, then the New M135i @ Golf R would be all over the ass of the M140 I until it went off into the hedge ,ditch or field, allowing then both to make good progress safely. Still achieving "Ultimate Driving Experience " within sensible / legal limits & having great fun into the bargain - imo.
Dan Prosser's comment " Would I miss the M140i " , answer NO!
Think he might just be right. As a bonus, less polluting in contaminates and noise . WIN WIN
Danilo Rodriguez 👍
What colour is the BMW? Great car!
'Storm Bay Individual' it is called
funny how pricing works..... in the UK, the BMW is only 200 pounds ($300AUD) more than the Golf R....... in Australia the BMW is almost $20,000 AUD more than the Golf R...... that $20,000 is too much to be ignored, so the winner in my eyes is (was)...... The Golf R!!!!
Golf R32 is the king
@40 Roller thats true but it’s full of classic character.
The M135i is advanced by ages than the R in every term !!
Can the 135i be tuned? For £700 that Golf can be turned into a 370hp monster.
Just get the M140i stock Dyno run at 360bhp stage 1 is 440bhp no mods
Just the fact that you are comparing a BMW to a VW shows BMW went in the wrong direction. This BMW looks like a deformed Kia and worse, its driven primarily by the same wheels. Not luxury, not worth the price
They cost the same, Einstein :)
The 1 series is not meant to be a luxurious car. If you want luxury go for a 5, 6, 7 or 8 series.
It still has a better quality than any Kia or VW...
@@markbrix9385 is take a Kia interior and Android Auto over a BMW bedazzle interior all day
Golf R all day long!
camera phones don't do it justice...
Driven both cars, I’ll have the Golf R over the 135i any day
It’s also more likely you won’t get the BMW stuck to your rear bumper or swerving in and out thru traffic using every lane of a 4 lane carriageway!
Prefer my 240i with its performance exhaust.
Odd conclusion after watching the video....Hmmmm
Serious very shocking the guy totally praised the Golf R then goes for the shity bm ....🤮
yer right?.... Presenter: "BMW is not so good, BMW is not as good"....... " the winner is the BMW!!!"..... WHAT????
Agree. These reviews are pointless. Biased 100% because they are paid to say it. Everyone seems to rave about this new 1 series (reviewers) but I've yet to see a single one on the road! Can't wait to see the sales figures for the new one!
@@rickmiles85 I saw a new one on the road a day or so ago.... the owner floored it from the Traffic lights.... it looked like it went hard..... but other than that one.... no, I can't say I've seen any others here (not that you would regularly see M140i's or the older M135i's here in Perth either)
Gloupy steering, never heard that before.
The Mk7 and 7.5 golf R will be a hard act to follow even for VW as its such a good all-rounder, BMW looks odd and will probably depreciate worse than a Golf R.
mark Agreed. Residual values are going to be crap compared to the gold standard golf r.
One thing is for sure. BMW will have NO problem clearing the stock of their old 140i's
@@adam88099 Absolutely, the M140i is such a unique car and has so much more character.
M140i please
Ill buy the R ✌️
Good review, but please ditch that distracting background music during the voice-overs!
VW - Ugly. Old fashioned. Wouldn’t seen dead in one.
BMW - Looks cool. Lovely interior. Excellent performance. I’ll have that.
Golf R boot space 380L also has dynamic suspension (DCC) standard...you should in to add competition!
Isn't standard
For correction my country is standard ,but for fair compression this video you have to mansion that I think...
Golf R boot capacity is reduced over 380 L of GTI version due to space requirements rear Transmission aspect of 4 Motion. A significant reduction, imo.
343 L boot space...
DCC is not standard
Yes, I knew the result. BMW's latest models are too good, fact.
Golf R has 310bhp not 296??
2017 to 2018 yes, new 2019 models have been put back to 296
Aaron Swift, no way how come?
@@davidellis4218 far as I'm aware is cause of the new fuel economy and Co2 regulations
And also tighter emissions demand
