- The Ohio State University Marching Band performed their "Hollywood Blockbusters" halftime show at the October 26, 2013 OSU vs. Penn State football game. Hollywood blockbuster movie scores from Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Superman, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Lord of the Rings make up the musical portion of the show. The Band formations include Superman righting a building after changing into his outfit of steel, Harry Potter playing Quidditch, The One Ring, A rather large moving dinosaur, and a battle of two very well know rival ships on the high seas.

It's alright. The way bands work for halftime is the Home band plays to their band, and the rival band plays to their side

But with OSU having over 104,000 seating capacity, bigger than most NFL stadiums, there are fans in seats on both sides of stadium as I have been just to get a seat to a big rivalry game and the stadium always sells out. Therefore, not being able to see this angle of OSU marching band, which is the only marching band in the world I care to see besides the football game.

I feel like marching bands don't get enough credit. This is truly awesome. I would watch a reality show about all the work it takes it make an awesome show. I did color guard in high school for just a year. I wasn't that great but I sure did gain respect for the band kids!
im sorry that show would be really boring 99% Of it is people screaming at each other because people dont remember formations or important parts of the song. it turns out amazing sometimes but even on the college level its a ton of blood sweat and tears but most of it at home in your room practicing at two in the morning and shit. oof i just got back from a practice and my head is so addled.

Actually colleges only have 1-2 weeks to memorize an entire halftime show. However it takes a lot to get into a college band.

@@treeper9986 Not at all lmao. A marching band performing at this level practices waaaaaay more than 1-2 weeks for shows like this. Agreed though, not anyone can join these bands, and its an entirely different level.
@@OmnipotentEnt actually you’d be surprised. As a current member, I’d say this show is doable in two weeks. We practice as a whole 2 hours Monday through Friday, but are expected to memorize the music outside of class time. Once we get a few weeks into a football season, we become surprisingly efficient at learning the marching, so we have more time to clean small things up.
When your schools band is far more popular than the actual sports team, great job Ohio State! This band is apparently one of if not the hardest band to get into.
@A Helgeson--I think "far more popular" is sorta off. More popular than, say, the fencing team, but not most sports and certainly not football. But yes, TBDBITL is crazy popular. They have skull sessions the morning of home games and the auditorium is packed. It's tradition for the head coach to go there and speak to the crowd. When I was an undergrad there, 2 of my friends were in the band and it was so clearly a point of intense pride--and hard work!

Almost all bands have alternates because a game-day absence can ruin a show. OSU may not be "the" hardest to get into, but it is very difficult. The director of the band at the time of this show is an OSU alumnus. He was cut the first time he audiitoned.

I totally understand your comment. But in defense of ESPN (and other networks) most marching bands are not near as good and entertaining as the Ohio State band. The Ohio State band is the gold standard.

@@ecneb If University of Tennessee is doing their circle drill that is just as good. I was mesmerized the first time I saw it. The circle drill changes year to year, but their are some good ones on youtube

It's muscle memory
Band dude here: it takes a bit of practice by the time the show comes around you have it down to muscle memory
This would give me so much anxiety trying to memorize where I'm supposed to go
Honestly it's all muscle memory. I was in marching bad for 3 years each was a 15 minute show. You get used to it after a while but it takes a lot and I mean a lot of practice.
It’s easier than it looks it’s really just a bunch of practice but once you have it down you won’t forget it

The level of talent required to play an instrument and walk, while remembering each place to go and each song at the same time. They did excellent!!

I can only imagine how how hard it is to work out several shows a year we had 3 different sets that we could play at any time and we had a lot of fun telling each other what formations and music use to piss of the director but it was a lot of fun

I’m from England and our sport is Soccer (English Football). I don’t fully understand American Football but watch it and enjoy it (am trying to learn). I will say that performance from the OS Marching Band was awesome.

+Jin-woo Hwangbo most high schools in America have marching bands that do this kind of thing for halftime shows in the middle of American football games. but this is a college marching band, so their shows are going to be even better. research this, i used to be a part of them in high school. they are very fun to be a part of, really a good balance between sport, art, and teamwork.
if you're wondering how they move from one spot to another, they're given music to study and charts of the football field that shows where they'll be from one formation to another. they practice both for weeks before performing.
this is 10 times cooler than any football game.

Ive been a hugh fan for a month now and ive been watching alot of there videos and when you think you have seen something amazing, and this video shows up, I was in our marching band in high school and was the section leader for our drum corps but this Ohio State band is literally jaw dropping, never seen anything so amazing in my life!!! Good job to all the kids and staff i know they work there tails off, and thats why there THE DAMM BEST BAND IN THE LAND!!!!!!

She scrolled to this comment and just started laughing really hard. We just showed it to the director and he said “you should be memorizing your next dot sheet”

My sister was in her high school’s marching band...They practiced before and after school and during the summer for months before school (and competition season) started. I have major respect for how much work it takes to be in an ensemble like hers and this one!!

What an honor that would be for the colleges chosen each year - and what appreciation they'd have for the stage upon which to entertain us.
