Terry was a true innovator on guitar and there aren’t enough instructional videos about his playing style on RUclips...thanks for helping fill in some of that void...🎸🔊🎶🤘🏻
Terry's guitar work on the Carnegie Hall and Tanglewood concerts is really mind blowing. He played with total abandon, and played long flowing leads that were nothing less than White Hot. He was truly blessed and so is everyone who digs what he did. Robert Lamm said it best...'Terry was my hero"....mine too!
ABSOLUTELY! His solo at Tanglewood on 25 or 6 to 4 is out of the stratosphere. The studio version could be argued to be THE best solo of all time on record and yet he demolishes it at Tanglewood.
Great way to describe Terry's playing was incredibly fast "stream of consciousness". When he got going he seemed to be in a trance. The most intense player I have ever seen.
25 or 6 to 4 was the first Chicago song I ever heard and one of the first songs I learned on guitar, Terry's playing on that song is just incredible and I always thought that he was such an underrated guitarist
Terry Kath is high on my list of all-time great players. A big inspiration on my playing, even though I don't even come close to what he was able to do. Thanks for this lesson.
I finished learning 25or6to4 last year. Took me 3 years along with Rood Mood. Both were the funnest songs to learn. I grew up with Chicago. 5yrs old listening to Chicago Transit Authority. Jeff, this is way kool. This is 40 years overdue! Nicely done, bro!
Very nice presentation. I was lucky enough to see him twice. Basically, he stood in one spot and played like an animal. A very talented one. I knew I was watching someone special. The whole band was great.
I saw an interview with Robert Lamm where he said “Terry always improvised his solos live. And he would sometimes back himself into a corner musically, during a solo, and then would somehow muscle his way back out of it. “He played with raw power. Sometimes it looked like he might break the neck on his guitar.
Jeff I've watched it seems countless how to play xxx on guitar and currently one on piano which I don't play but have divided to do a solo at my wedding in February. Anyway they are all just painfully long and it takes so long to get to the next part. You are of all the best (at least for me) I have seen. You are clear precise and you move at the right speed. Thanks Terry is as much the reason I play guitar today as any. I started a good bit before Chicago came out (I've been playing more than 50 years) but boy when they did. Chicago became my favorite band and Terry my favorite guitarist.
Naw most of the time usually passed up unless you're talking real guitar circles with people who know real guitar players.. Ian bairnson comes to mind for example
Well done. I've been working to play Terry's original solos and all of these tips are spot-on. For me at least, I can finally his recorded solos (25 or 6 to 4, Make Me Smile, Questions 67/68, etc.) at speed if I significantly reduce the actual right hand picking, instead using more hammering with my left. When I first tried to do these solos I was picking too many of the notes. Thanks for doing this!
Should have played those Kath licks through a Pignose! Or, the Strat with a Bogen Pa overdriving the pre-amp of a Dual Showman~aka 'Free Form Guitar'. Which by the way is like having a Master Volume, which was unheard of in 1969. Also, if you watch this excellent movie...'Electra Glide in Blue', some of the CTA members are in it. And, ironically, Kath is the hippie that shotguns Robert Blake. Peter Cetera has some Motorcycle chase scenes also.
Learn your CTA history. Jimi Hendrix told Chicago’s Sax/flute player Walter Parazaider that Terry was the best guitarist he ever heard. It’s on all the documentaries of the band and Terry specifically.
Kath was a monster! Just mind blowing...I think TK would of just kept going with that guitar...kinda like Jeff Healey or vice versa is where TK was going or Rory Gallagher kinda thing...
from 1972 he mainly used the pignose amp he was one of the backers behind the pignose amp.. he believed in it. you can see lots of vintage ads with Terry playing the pig nose and holding the pig nose that's why the latter guitar he had was adorned with pig nose stickers
michael All of those stories are BS. There is no record that he said that about anybody. Here is a Snopes article about it: www.snopes.com/fact-check/phil-keaggy/ I believe the root of the myth is from an appearance he made on the Dick Cavett Show. Dick asked him how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world and Jimi got embarrassed and said, “Maybe the greatest guitarist in this chair now”. People began inserting other guitarists into the story.
@@Chord_The_Seeker I agree! Having been a long time Hendrix admirer, and witnessed The Experience play at two separate times, the only guy that was 'endorsed' by Jimi, was an up & coming Billy Gibbons. The rest is All BS!
Kath was a guitar god! Why don’t more players know about him? Recognize!!!
Terry Kath was BA! I'm old enough to remember when '25 or 6 to 4' was released, and I was blown away then, and still am. *RIP Terry*

Finally he gets some recognition

Underrated to fake music polls

I got to see him play live back in the day. Mesmerizing.
So did I in '69 & 71! The first concert started with 7 little known guys. When it was over EVERYBODY in the house knew who Terry Kath was!!!

" He's my favorite guitarist! "

Well done Jeff! Terry was amazing.
Man Terry was one of the best! Awesome video!

Check out the 1970 live video of Chicago playing 25 or 6 to 4. One of my favorite live videos.
Terry was a great musician/singer/songwriter.
And for some odd reason, Terry isn’t ever listed in any “top 100” guitarist of all time. Sad!
Naw most of the time usually passed up unless you're talking real guitar circles with people who know real guitar players..
Ian bairnson comes to mind for example
Terry didn't use a Fuzz Face...just a Maestro and MuTron II. Thanks for the video and recognition for Mr. Kath.
Awesome lesson!! On Terry's playing!!
Thank you for this . Much appreciated.
Terry "Don't Worry, It's Not Loaded" Kath is probably the best there ever was. Thanks for the lesson!@
Underrated

"play his recorded solos" is what I meant of course

Plays a awesome lick.
Hi I'm jeff

Terry Kath a genius, up there with Hendrix.
Dry sound! I like it!!! Raw!
Never even knew about this man. Or this band. God bless.
Kath was a monster! Just mind blowing...I think TK would of just kept going with that guitar...kinda like Jeff Healey or vice versa is where TK was going or Rory Gallagher kinda thing...
Kath is the only reason I pick up a guitar. 🎸
I'd love to see a crazy look at how to get some of his crazier tones. I heard he used a deep reverb 6 or some weird amp for his live sounds
from 1972 he mainly used the pignose amp he was one of the backers behind the pignose amp.. he believed in it.
you can see lots of vintage ads with Terry playing the pig nose and holding the pig nose

no tele?
I thought that quote from Hendrix was about Rory Gallagher.
It's a popular quote format to fill in with whatever person you want. Who knows if Jimi ever even said it.
It was about Rory Gallagher. Jimi said it on a Tv show during an interview. 😂

@@jon.wilson yeah I have heard 3 different guitarists named.

Vibesss
do Tony Iommi next
Way !
Looks like the duffer brothers
Chicago , great band , before the Las Vegas hit " If you ... "
your neck looks nice an oiled lol
Do Angus Young
Great topic, but poorly done. This solo is based on A harmonic minor. Sorry there is a lot more going on in this solo!
Sorry I am not in this camp. He had one great outro lick on one of his solo's. Whoopty doo. succession of descending pull offs?
Didn't see your great guitar work, looked on your U tube profile. Shhh
Martin Martin Yet, you watched it. Weird. Jealousy sucks.
Kath was both a fantastic rhythm and lead guitarist. You clearly need to listen to more of his work, and a hell of a lot closer.
