It's a real puppet musical comedy show that aired in Japan during the 60s, and was very popular. When it came time to rebroadcast the show, it was discovered that film reels for the show were damaged, but thankfully the production team had all of the puppets and assets in good condition, so they decided to remake it during the early 90s. The show is essentially about a group of kids who go on a field trip to a place called Hyokkori Hyoutanjima (suddenly moving gourd island), but are trapped on the drifting island after an earthquake occurs, thus breaking the island apart from the bridge that would allow them to go back. The main cast includes: Professor: a child genius whose smarts help the team Danpu: A mischievous boy Teke: A boy whose running gag is that he constantly thinks of food, even during times when it isn't important Chappy: A tomboyish girl Sandy-sensei: The teacher that brought the group to Hyoutanjima. Her main trait is that she is kind hearted Machinegun Dandy: A wanted criminal who appears on Hyoutanjima, despite being a criminal he is actually quite kind. Don Gabacho: The mayor of Hyoutanjima, who isn't very good at his job of being mayor. Despite not being the main character of the show, he was extremely popular and a lot of merchandise was sold of him. Torahige: A pirate who came to Hyoutanjima with several treasures. I have only watched an episode, of the show, but I found it pretty enjoyable.
