Agree, I had done away with my 3 and 4 iron for a 21 degree hybrid about 10 years ago. That was a great move for me. I hit really well. Fast forward to today, I’m 52 years old, I have added a 7 wood. This gives me much more stoping power than the hybrid I’ve been gaming. My 4 iron carry’s 200 finishes 225. Hybrid carry’s 205 finishes 220. 7 wood is carrying 210 finishing 220.
Kevin! I had the pleasure of working with him for a short stint right before Covid hit. Great guy, pure swing, awesome club fitter. Glad to see he’s doing well and still with 2nd Swing. Miss ya Kev!
I've fiddled around with this part of my bag for years and finally settled on a pretty sweet setup that contains 2 of the clubs you hit here funny enough. Took my 4iron out and went to the Srixon ZU85 3i and I love it for a tee club and off great fairway lies. I hit a consistent nice cut with it and keep it in play well. Then I picked up a TSR2 7 wood after I just got fed up with hybrids. That 7 wood is so versatile for me. I love it off the tee, in the fairway or even out of the rough. The shape of it gets through the rough very well I have found. The setup is unconventional but it's working well for me and isn't that the great part about golf? We all have our own game and need to find the clubs to make it all work.
I had a 7 wood in the bag for a very long time when I just started 3 years ago. It‘s so easy to hit and get it in the air. But a year ago fell in love with an old macgregor 3 from my fathers bag, which is now my savest club. I can keep it low and let it run if it‘s windy or send it 210 of the tee to a tight fairway.
I play the ZX MKii UT 4iron, and a weakened P790 5i to blend with P770s. Currently sorting out what do between the 4i and 3/4 wood. May end up keeping a 7 wood for that, but we'll see.
I got a ZX 5 4 iron that I can hit well on occasion and use it to get out of trouble. Picked up a Tour Edge E722 3 H last year when they dropped prices. And have a Cobra Ltdx Max 7 wood that I love but wish I would have got the regular Ltdx as that draw biased max tend to go left. Also have the Cobra Ltdx Max 5 wood that is great. Took a 3 wood out of the bag and replaced with 5. 3 wood way to all over the place.
I found a Callaway Epic Speed 3w and 7w combo at 2nd Swing in Dallas while on a business trip. They followed me home from the trip and they have the Ventus Red 8tx and 9tx in them. The 3wood is really good but the 7 wood is something else. I'm a +4, was a 2 iron user for 20+ years, but don't have the game for a real 2 iron anymore. I have also NEVER gotten along with any hybrid or utility iron long term except for my Gen 6 PXG but it tendes to be to low spin at times. I can do anything I need to with this 7 wood. I had been toying with the idea of a 7 wood for a few years but never pulled the trigger as I never could find one to demo with a shaft in the weight and profile range I like. One lucky business trip to Dallas and I'm a 7 wood convert for life.
My 4 iron club speed is 102 average. When the wind is calm ping g425 7 wood is my preferred choice. Super forgiving and carrying 220 is hard to beat. If the wind is over 12mph then I fall back on a utility iron because it’s a little more resistant to the wind. I just check the weather before leaving the house.
I've got an apex uw on the way in the post to fill my 3w gap, I haven't been this excited to get a club since the epic sub zero driver. I've never got on with woods
I just ordered an icrossover 3 with Kai'li white. I watched your guys previous vids and just got some time with 4 of the new hybrids, and a couple 7 woods. The hybrids were decent for me but dispersion was all over, the 7 woods were just so high and too much spin for me (made me sad because i loved the look and feel of them), the 3 Ping icrossover hit the exact distance gap I needed at the top of my bag. I went in testing my gapping/distance of my 4,5,6 (t100s) then to my 5w Paradym td. My 4i and 5i were playing near identical from a tee and the 5i was better on average off the deck. but I went from 198-205 in the 4i/5i up to 230(+-5) in my 5w. The Ping was giving me an average of 215 and filled that gap nicely, so I will probably just drop my 4i. Love your videos!
To get the gapping right I carried both a 4 hybrid lofted at 23 degrees and a 7w at 21 degrees - I just do not have enough club head speed to play a 3h, just cannot get enough peak height
Go try a Hywood! I hit it barely shorter than my best 5 woods, but like 8-9/10 vs 5-6/10 good shots. The old by-wood is 3+ 18 degrees. New ones are 3+ and 17 degrees and a bigger head, slightly longer, and the 4+ is 20 degrees. I haven’t hit the new ones yet. But I am a low ball hitter, and hit the old Hywood high, maybe even a touch too high and had to move the ball back slightly.
I'm currently testing a 4 iron, 4 hybrid, 4 wood set up. That's at 24, 21, 16.5 lofts respectively. Finding about a 15 yard carry distance between each which is probably acceptable
I’m fairly new to the game. I seem to drive just barely off the fairway half the time. What club is best for distance from there? I keep hearing hybrids are good from the rough but I only see them used in the simulator from the fairway.
Good question. Some of it will depend on your attack angle and how thick the rough is that you play. Nowdays, both hybrids and 7-woods are built to glide through rough and produce more consistency from these spots
Dispersion is the most important if you are trying to reach a green at this distance. If that is the case, T150 is the clear winner here. I would have preferred to see Callaway’s super hybrid in this test but for me the T150 would be my club to go if I had the same results.
I have some older irons (TM Bubble shafts). Man i love my 3 iron, keeps it a bit lower than a wood but i can hit it like 180-190. When i hit it perfect its so satisfying! Cant hit my 4 iron, so im thinking of getting a wood or hybrid for a bit more height if needed
Just started using 7 wood this summer (220) ,next is hybrid(3 or 4), then cobra utility iron (5) CB 6 to 9. I should mention I use 3 wood off the tee ,because have not found a Driver that finds the fairway...;-)
I have a cobra Aerojet 7 wood with a Ventus TR Red in and its my favourite club in the bag, I'm looking to replace my 4 iron for probably hybrid, definitely need to get it fitted to get the gapping right 7 wood is 220 and 5 iron is 190
Is there are reason I seem to slice my hybrid? I don’t have this issue with driver, fairway woods or irons but my hybrid seems to slice my ball more than it hits straight
Good question and thanks for watching! From a loft perspective, most 7-woods are around 21 degrees, and nowadays, most 4-irons are closer to 21 degrees than 3-irons so that's what we based this on. But several years ago, standard 3-iron lofts were much closer to matching 7-woods. 9-woods at 23 degrees can also be a 4-iron replacement for some weaker-lofted iron sets. Ultimately, though, it's about your gapping. You might want both a 4-iron and a 7-wood in the bag if the gapping is appropriate for you.
5 hybrid or perhaps a 9 wood, or a more forgiving model 5 iron like a Titleist 350, PXG Gen 6XF, or Srixon ZX4 (these are not the only forgiving irons)
Depends a little bit on what iron model your 5-iron is. Options to look into would be a 4-hybrid or 5-hybrid or perhaps a 9-wood. You would just want to ensure your lofts are spaced adequately. So, for example, if your 5-iron is 26 degrees of loft, you wouldn't want to go to a 23-degree 9-wood because that would create uneven gapping between your clubs. But obviously if your 5-iron is closer to 23 degrees, then that is a viable option.
P770 standard 5-iron loft is 25.5. If you or your fitter didn’t customize the lofts at all, a 24 or 25 degree hybrid might be the best bet. Should give you some additional launch and height off the turf
if I could hit fairway woods better, I would def look at a 7 wood. I play a utility iron that I hit very very well and still love hitting my 4 iron. I need to work on being better with fairway woods
We tried to match up lofts as close as we could. Most golfers wrestling with this question are deciding between clubs at this loft, around 21-22 degrees. With that said, we can definitely do a 9-wood test as well
i have a srixon 7x mk2 7 wood. Favourite club in the bag. 220m fairway finder, also stops on greens. Like hitting a wedge its so easy to launch the ball. I will never touch a hybrid again
What this test has shown to me is that if you only care about distance, get a wood of some kind. If you value dispersion more than distance, go with an iron of some description.
I swing at about 120-125 mph with the driver, and I play Driver-8* 3 wd-13.5* 5 wd-18,5* 7 wd-22.5* 9 wd-27* 6-lw. The fairway woods are just extremely easy to hit. The worst shot with a fairway wood is a lot better than my worst with a long iron, and I don't like hybrids. I have been thinking of getting 13 wood (31 degrees), but no one makes a modern-day quality adjustable 13 wood.
100% exactley what i was asking. im going for P770 6i to GW in set and then getting fit hybrids vs fairway woods. you're setup was one of the options i want to try
kevin says he hit the 7w and hybrid best, but he hit the 4 iron best...much tighter dispersion..his 7w would miss every green left. He should play the 4 iron all day and get a 3 iron for the 7w distances.
Personally I think the way to go is 1 utility iron, 1 hybrid, and 1 wood at least. You never know what you may like on each day. More than one of each could work but at least one of each is essential
I just got fit 2 days ago, and we replaced my 4 iron with a 7 wood. Amazed by how much easier it was to hit, carry to, and stop on the green
You love to see it
did you get fit at 2nd swing?
@@jeredmattson9 No, I'm in SC, so nearest location is like Texas. Went through a local place

A lot of people struggle with hooking hybrids. it's either a setup issue or the shaft/ head combo you have doesn't work for you.
great review but I thought 9 wood replaced 4 iron/hybrid and 7 wood replaced 3 iron/hybrid? per ping it does any how...
Good question and thanks for watching! From a loft perspective, most 7-woods are around 21 degrees, and nowadays, most 4-irons are closer to 21 degrees than 3-irons so that's what we based this on. Is the Srixon the current model ?
It's a model from a few years ago. Goal here was to find clubs of each type with similar lofts and test the performance
Hi can I ask what is good 5i replacement? Thanks
5 hybrid or perhaps a 9 wood, or a more forgiving model 5 iron like a Titleist 350, PXG Gen 6XF, or Srixon ZX4 (these are not the only forgiving irons)

The only way I judge what to use is by which one has the best results from the worst shots. Fairway wood or hybrid for me!
Exactly. On the course you don't get to eliminate the "out liers".
What 2 hybrids does Kevin play?
Cobra KING Tec 2 and 4 hybrids. They’re his favorite!
How is the tsr2 7 wood compared to tsi2 7 wood?
They are the same.
Can't see how it could improve much on the tsi2, best club in my bag
Where'd Thomas go?
Why wouldn't they compare the 2 irons to a 5H and a 9W? Would be a much better comparison.

Woods can have great dispersion. That whole fitting thing. But the irons will hit out of the rough better than any wood or hybrid IMHO.
Paradym hybrids are incredible.
I use a 7 wood with a 5 wood shaft, and a 4 utility driving iron.
Interesting! How does the modified 7-wood (with 5-wood shaft) do compared to the stock 7-wood and stock 5-wood?
Let's get Jackie on this test
Conduct the test out of the rough and compare, that’s the real difference
True! Another element to this decision to consider for sure

3 wd-13.5*
5 wd-18,5*
7 wd-22.5*
9 wd-27*
6-lw.

Not sure I’ve seen a 1 iron or 1 hybrid, but 1 wood is known as a driver where I come from.
Balls don't know what hit them. Use whatever gives you the proper gapping.
So basically anyone with a sub 100mph driver swing speed should definitely NOT be playing a 4 iron and probably not even a 5 iron.
