thanks... we also will continue to put up introductory videos of musicians and engineers in order to inspire the younger generation. keep watching and do share these too.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Shantanu in person and I must say he is a very generous, humble, positive and wonderful person and engineer. Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge with us. Thanks Shantanu and Sudeep Audio
I stumbled upon this channel accidently... and what a blessing it has been.. so much of wisdom & learning... Deeply appreciate the efforts put!!! Kudos... Please keep doing the great work..
once Shatanu is through with Jab Tak Hai Jaan with AR Rahman and has some free time on hand, we will work on a master class. And share details. Keep following us on facebook and twitter.
In a world where many people guard their "trade secrets"... Shantanu Sir, you have shared your experience freely in so much detail. Thank you very much.! Thanks to Sudeep Audio for creating this channel.
Very cool video! thanks. Just want to point out to another technique called Glyn Johns method of miking drums, where you use 2 mics which are equidistant from the snare and the kick..add some spot mics You get good stereo image, and great overall sound.(I like to think of a drum kit as one instrument). Been very happy with the results:) As usual, great stuff! More videos like this pls:)
Very informative and helpful video. Really appreciate Shantanu for being so open and sharing his knowledge and experience with all. Its rare.Thank you guys for making this. Looking forward to more videos.
Hi, thank you for sudeep audio and shantanu sir, gaining credible & practical education apart from textbook theory is a very rare one to find. I would like to ask Shantanu Sir; for someone young who has not really played & experimented with how sound is affected by room acoustics, delays & reverbs in ACTUAL REAL places, where do I start? My generation was born with the computer as a tool but after eventually taking a gap of 2-3 months to just listen to a diverse styles of music I realized how Voice Leading in an Orchestra, the Synergy & Groove in the Drums and Bass really captures the magic. I think room acoustics, & ACTUAL delays & reverberations in a REAL SPACE would be of the same caliber to the recording aspect of music just as Groove, synergy & voice leading are to the rest. Every time I compose music I keep those above mentioned terms at the back of my mind, but how do I practice & get good at differentiating a good & a bad room sound? To start with I start clapping in every room I enter in xD but what next? By the way, Sir can we expect a Masterclass at YRF Studios anytime soon :D?
The best thing about Sudeep Audio is, if you guys promise a video, I can be dead sure that its going to happen. Never does it happen that Aditya, makes the promise and then doesn't live up to it! Great work SA, and great work Aditya. You should do a video intro of yourself sometime too! Good stuff! :) - Arun.
a slightly long comment..but please read, SA i learned about the decca tree 3-4 days back..and i went crazy searching for a video. cuz once i learn something in my classes..i have to see happening in front of me..and unfortunately do have an internship at any studio.. so..i was searching for decca tree on youtube..but i cudn find any video that really gave me what i was looking for..please add a tag to the video so that when ppl search decca tree..they will come to this wonderful video..thnxalot
Super video. Go SA. Keep doing this good work. This is SO SO required in India. Wish I had access to training like this earlier in my life! My profession would have changed!
Phase inverting the mic below the snare is for actually avoiding phase cancelation or combing effects... When the drummer impinges the snare the upper membrane on the snare goes inwards, which causes the membrane below to be pushed outwards... Which also ends up compressing air in the bottom, while on top, it is decompressing air and creating an area of low pressure. Now when you have a mic for snare top and bottom, naturally the mic above would pick up rarefaction of air, but at the same time and the mic below picks up the compression of air, when these two are summed together they cancel out... That's why you phase flip the bottom for the sake of bringing it back in phase with the top mic.... This is just basic.... A lot of factors also affect the movement of the membrane on the snare, like for example the air inside it
the mic positions, its awesome... i think i am gonna spend some money to buy more mics and try them out... will come back... anyway thanks a lot for this.. i am sure that many new comers would be helped with this information.
Very good session. Let's hope we can produce high quality recordings in India too by following these instructions. Thank you very much Shantanu for your great knowledge sharing and also thanks Sudeep Audio to share such very useful videos. Keep up good work.
Thanks a lot sudeep Audio....doing great work by uploading videos of PRAMOD sir,KJ singh Sir & shantanu.....looking forward for the master class.....would also request you to upload th stuffs from Vijay Dayal sir & also for Live sound techniques.....
This is the ultimate tour cum tutorial...so far and in so much detail...without wastage of speech and time. Mr Shantanu really knows his art vey well. Thanks to Sudeep Audio for this episode....if u delve deep into Mr Shantanu's Cirtisim about how the current scenario of music production is now a days, then he is absolutely right, but then at the same time, people don't either have or get opportunities....but at least this episode is helping the mass learn the techniques involved in making and producing music the right way... Thanks again....
Really impressed with Sudeep Audio...Where did Mr.Shantanu do his sound engineering and recording course ? I’m aspiring to be a sound engineer, so if you could put this question to Shantanu, what are the best institutes for sound engineering and recording arts in India and abroad ?
wanted to know what difference does placing the kit on a "wooden podium"(lack of a better word) make contrary to placing them on the floor during recording, in this particular studio. ty
Please if is it possible then Create a separate playlist about recording different instruments...and have a deep conversations about different types of mikes... with him .... 😊
Thanks! amazing insights anyways its your philosophy which gets the way through |m| different recording environments require different pullouts..its sometimes (more than we think) philosophy or aim/goal is that was required..I always hang on to that.. it should be recorded right...and well there is no right onto what you want to do..keep experimenting and keep doing..whatever you have...cheers keep inspiring Mr. Huldikar |m|
great techniques ….but one confusion is there to me ,what should be the phase position for the patterns you explained ,is it to be in phase or out of phase for a AB or XY or DECA TREE. please guide if possible thank you sir
Hearty Thanks again Shantanu for sharing your knowledge with us \m/ Aadi Boss you are doing really very very good job by sharing all these stuffs through SudeepAudio :-) Really want to meet you someday and say Thanks to you for all you are doing for music and for musicians across the country. \m/ thanks again \m/
I think his philosphy makes alot of sense. But I would like to see a video where he is put in the shoes of a studio engineer beginner. It would definitely be interesting to see what he would do in various situations, how he would use what he has to create the best recording environment on a very limited budget. Because all he says may well be true and good, but I just can't put myself into his position because of all this massively expensive recording gear he has to work with.
It's nothing to do with philosophically motivated advice.. People doesn't understand your views so they over reacted! I guess.. I loved your advice and i will try to apply as much i can... Thank you
Is this the way they position drum mics in india....god....what about the top and resonant head of toms or the beater and resonant head of the kick drum..we all know that they have to get separate mics...also the overheds have to be two mucs for a stereo effect..
poor guy shantanu im so sorry 4 him kisi kaam ko jazzy banane se jaaz nahin ban jata hai... jazz to jazz hai.... just remember for ever ..... thats it.....
thanks... we also will continue to put up introductory videos of musicians and engineers in order to inspire the younger generation. keep watching and do share these too.

Thank you on twitter waiting for the Master Class....
How does microphone positioning differ from recordings versus live performances? Is there any special consideration?
I am not a musician, actually a lawyer, but loved this video!
Master class.
Thnx
Which dynamic mic is this? and did you use condenser mic for overhead and hi hat?
that room is gigantic with all those acoustics on the wall , jesus christ!!!!!!

You are right sir!! The right term is Hihats...
why was echo coming in his studio
Please SudeepAudio If You'd Really Consider What Mr. Shantanu Said At 2:48
great techniques ….but one confusion is there to me ,what should be the phase position for the patterns you explained ,is it to be in phase or out of phase for a AB or XY or DECA TREE. please guide if possible thank you sir
Shantanu replies:
All mics have to be phase coherent with each other irrespective of the miking technique - be it AB, XY or multi-mono.
Thankyou sir
Thanks to Aditya.
