It isn't about how one might look, but how they have learnt to perceive themselves, specially in their more formative years.
A person's formed subjective perception can seem quite foreign than what even most people might see now, in the place they are.
That is why she tries to not subject herself to her own perception.

Yes, but she is conventionally attractive and that comes with a privilege. It doesn’t matter how you think of yourself or of beauty standards, you still benefit from people idolising attractiveness in one way or another. It’s like rich people saying money isn’t everything when there are people directly affected by poverty (you can eat properly, you can’t get education, you can’t fix your physical and mental health, you can’t support your loved ones, etc.).

    • @Heleyrine

      @@margaritam.9118
Yes, but there are those who are "privileged" and yet suffer a great deal more, mentally, than those who don't hold them.
It is not a game in which those who have it "conventionally" better, must not speak for a trouble that isn't related to how things are, but how things are perceived.
Mental illness is, after all, how we perceive ourselves and the world around us; and if shame is a state shared imbetween those who are priveleged and those who aren't, both should give insight to their situation. Of course, one mustn't claim to know the others' version of the feeling. She does not. She says in an interview that for instance, the idea of body positivity and acceptance movement is not for her, since she is slender and doesn't face the trouble those women face, but, she may share the experience that she had.

I so agree with her in nude equality. I for one are not that interested in nude scenes in movies and series but what makes me furious is that it is ALWAYS the woman who is nakid. I want 50/50! Or at least more men, just because it's more equal. Heck if I had it my way, creative camera angles that show no nudity is the best way to go (a show is about storyline and characters. If it lives only off of sex and nudity, than it's not a good one in my opinion..) but that is never gonna happen so at least have more equality!

She just wants to be happy and I think this is something we should all embrace. What does it mean to be "pretty"? Society taught us to perceive being pretty in a certain way but I think this is all messed up. Everybody is gorgeous and by saying " imagine being that pretty without makeup" you're putting yourself underneath her thinking that you're less beautiful and you want to look like her in a way. @@LauraLopez-wb8ju When people who are not seen by society as beautiful as Jameela have a harder time creating a space for themselves this is an issue that needs to be talked about. The notion that how beautiful someone is shouldn't affect the why their character is received is true but sadly doesn't work daily. And when people have a hard time because by the standards of society they are plain looking or ugly telling them to not think about it that way, telling them that they're just as beautiful, that they're wrong for thinking this way is demeaning. Being a not conventionally beautiful woman is an experience that is very much worth sharing. Otherwise you end up receiving all the downsides of being not beautiful and it's somehow your fault that you think about it.

@@GotikLeyla , agreed. It's an experience in and of itself to accept my "awkward beauty" as i call it. When facing my own insecurities of not matching the "sold" images of beauty ,it has been tremendously uplifting to accept them. I jokingly accepted that I'm not a super model and never will be. I won't love all aspects of my body in an obsessive worshipping way and that's where my real self-love journey began. Accepting myself as I am. Insecurities and all embracing my simple taste and fashion to boot. My definition of beauty became redifined. And in that not only do I see ,truly see, my unique beauty, but I experience it,too.

I have never heard anyone describe the concept of body neutrality before, but I find it so helpful. I think I have been trying to practice it without knowing it was a thing. I am a woman who's been growing out all my body hair for the last four years, and I struggle not to view it as ugly. I used to tell myself I "should" think it was beautiful, then I thought, maybe it's enough to just see it as neutral or natural, so I'm trying to do that. Maybe you don't quite get it because it hasn't been part of your own experiences, but I'll try to explain. She was made to feel ugly (on top of being disabled) while growing up and she seems to still having a hard time believing it, even if she's found some degree of peace and acceptance regarding her looks. Also when you're beautiful, whether you believe yourself to be or not, there's a fair amount of pressure to always appear as beautiful as possible, not to waste your looks and so on. A bunch of silly expectations becoming the source of an insane amount of pressure put upon your shoulders, including the expectation to cope with that pressure like it's nothing, when its not. I've gone through that, and even though I feel beautiful now, I don't really care about being perceived like that, or clinging to that ideal. It's unhealthy, so I try to feel like me, and look like me, and if being me is beautiful to you, then good, but that's not why I do it. I hope I was able to help you understand. But if you still wanna believe beautiful people can't appreciate and be grateful about their perceived beauty because they take it for granted then sure, keep thinking like that, you're free to do so.

I'm interested in focusing on other stuff like my intellect, humor and like Jameela says, my bank account. This morning I woke up feeling like I wasn't sexy. Perfect video to straighten up my day. Most days I obsess over what I'm eating and if my stomach's gotten any flatter. I have body dismorphia just like Jameela. I'm going to stop focusing on whether or not my body is sexy. After all, being sexy for me is about being sexy for other people. Turns out, I realize I'm sexy enough for myself. I work out regularly, do yoga, eat right and stretch. I do take care of my body.
