With a seriously large amount of travel coming up to some dense urban metropolises such as LA, New York, Toronto and Tokyo; we realised our window of opportunity to visit Scotland was very slim before the days get colder and darker.
Embarrassingly, neither Elly or I had ever been to Scotland. Yet we've been all the way around the other side of the world to the far reaches of New Zealand... We wanted to change that and make the quick hop up from London to experience some of the best nature the UK has to offer.
Our 2-day road trip consisted of a loop from Edinburgh into the Highlands via Loch Lomond, to Loch Ness, Glenfinnan and the Isle of Skye, before journeying back towards Edinburgh. I wanted to make a travel vlog similar to how this channel used to look a couple of years ago, featuring more about the journey and our overall experience rather than a segment of a particular photography day. I really enjoyed making it and look forward to part 2 coming in the next few days!
P.S. A note on the drone footage quality: After reviewing the footage from this trip, I noticed a lot of the watercolour effect happening. I've since adjusted from -1 sharpening to +1 sharpening on my Mavic Pro in an attempt to disable to noise reduction algorithm causing the bad quality picture. Hopefully it's all good for the next time I use my drone!

Oh that cafe at the beginning is great; it’s an Inn - you can stay in it too. There’s also an island just offshore with a bunch of ruins on it; go down to the boatyard and find someone and just ask them to take you across (and give them a time to come and pick you up again!)
the dark aesthetic is giving me life i swear
Love this vlog and so good to see you guys being silly and travelling! Can’t wait to see part two!!!
Day to day, silly is all I know. Somehow on camera, I rarely get caught 🙊
Shu is my actual favourite name xx
Perfect timing, me and my girlfriend are visiting Scotland in November and are going to be staying in the Isle of Skye to do some exploring and photography! Can't wait.
Can't wait for part 2, your vlog never disappointed me Joe! Keep it up.
Edit: Thanks for the heart, never expected you see my comments
'It's not the destination, but the journey that counts.'
Oh my Outlander heart!
Create a photography Travel Packing list. That way you'll aways have the gear you need and also won't leave anything behind when you pack up to return home.
Both Stirling and Edinburgh castles are small villages, well worth a visit.
Great video I love how you guys have so much fun in your travels can't wait for part2!
Glencoe is my favourite place in Scotland. So atmospheric when rainy
Definitely atmospheric! One minute you can see it and the next it’s disappeared among the mist!
The Loch which you stopped at, near Bridge of Orchy, is Loch Tulla. Also, you were in the Highlands just south of Luss, on Loch Lomond. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Haste ye back
So good! I can't wait for part 2!
I think the quotation you are looking for, is
“to travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.”
Robert Louis Stevenson
Check out Dornoch next time thats in the highlands absolutely lovely place.
Wow, great timing! We took this route on the way to the Isle of Mull around the same time and this video brings a lot of nice memories of the beautiful landscape we saw on the way.
Gorgeous shots
What a lovely couple and enjoying the video
Makes us miss our trip to Scotland so much! Loved filming there in the winter - views are breathtaking ^^
Great content as always man 🙌 enjoy the nature you’ll love it 🤙
Awesome pics of Rowardennan at the start there. Living in AU now I miss that place
Hello Joe!! 😊😊 Here is a poem about the destination and the journey!!!
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.
Ithaca, C.P Cavafis
That intro was incredible - really smooth and really nice! greetings from Melbourne Australia
Love the video man keep them coming
short but epic trip! seems that I was really lucky with the rain on my Scotland trip🙏
Was just in Scotland a couple of weeks ago for vacation. Loved Edinburgh and the Highlands. Missing it already 😩
Ah nice! I hope you had more luck with the weather than we did haha
Sort of haha. It was sunny weather. However, I'm from California and it's blazing hot here right now so I was craving gloomy and rainy weather in Scotland. We should have traded hahaha
Wow! Beautifully captured - definitely would love to get up to Scotland this summer!!
Great to see you in my country Joe- not far from where I live. If you are still here and heading back near Glasgow, drive down past Loch Lomond and the Argyll Forest, get the ferry from Dunoon, over to my home town of Gourock. I’ll buy you both a beer!
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below, where, wild in the woodlands, the primroses blow
Always enjoy watching your videos but this one of up there with one of my favourites due to me being Scottish and you being in Glencoe my favourite place in the world. The first mountain you stopped at after the ski resort was Buachaille Etive Mor ( The road that goes down the side of it to Glen Etive is where Skyfall was filmed) and the last mountain range you showed before Fort William Is the Three Sisters of Glencoe. Really looking forward to the second part now.
Me and a friend did the North Coast 500 2 weeks ago and we loved every second!! Amazing.
Hi Joe, love your vlogs man! The combi between cinematic and vlogging is something we can learn from! 👌🏻👌🏻
Scotland is very beautiful and amazing! and i love this vlog.Just keep moving forward
What a beauty place, and take some shots... Very amazing trips.. 👍👍👍
Have to agree , I just loved this video
Side note: Joe's eyes are mesmerizing, especially at 3:40
The music really makes this video. That and the super cinematic drone shots, but mainly the music 💯 well done here! 👍🏻
Have a safe driving to a long journey

Just booked flights for April 2020 - looks absolutely gorgeous!
Karen Innes me being Scottish I welcome you to my great country
I’m pretty sure I’ve stayed in that B&B, from what I remember it was nice and cosy, especially with the Scottish weather lol.
I want to go to scotland. The only thing is, I live in the lizard peninsular which is like the most sourthern point in the UK...
Monwey you lazy bugger you make it sound like you live in Australia
I just wanna you to know this video is amazingly edited!!
Think of the Southern Norway! Scottish highlands gets similar weather. Bring the hays and jackets!
Scotland looks insane
Nice to see the travel videos back :-)
Nice vlog! I've never been to Scotland but it seems to be beautiful!!! Lovely footage 😍
I’m so glad I’ve now made the trip up there and will definitely be returning in the future!
You've never seen Glencoe until you've been soaked through. It's know as the Weeping Glen.
Amazing visuals in this man!
Epic vlog. Amazing, Awesome, Adventure 😊
awesome guys!
Another fine vlog Joe! "Life is a journey, not a destination", thats the way I remember the saying.
Yes, thanks! That’s pretty much what I was trying to say haha!
Thank you - brings back fond memories
Great! I love Scotland!
I think the Quote you were looking for is "It isn't about the destination rather the Journey". :)
Amazing video Joe, I especially liked the intro and music! Scotland really looks beautiful... except for maybe all that rain. 🙂
The intro views are so cinematic. Is this the Panna or the Fuuj.
All video from the GH5 👌
SOOOOOO intrested in photgraphy. hope to do it one day as a career. I even film my own videos on it.
Me too ;)
Hey there, the link for the music isnt working, but I'd love to use that piece in a video aswell... could you add the name of the artist or tell me where to find it? also love your vlogs!
Greetings from Germany :)
Lovely video as always Joe. Didn't know Scotland were so similar to Norway.
Can't wait to film here
Loved this vlog and i love scotland!!!
These visuals were absolutely amazing. Could we please get a tutorial on those opening titles.
Scotland is amazing I would like to live there one day
It’s not as good when you live there
I’m italian and I live in Scotland. It is beautiful and the people are amazing.. BUT, the constant rain it’s just so depressing.
I won’t spend all my life here
I love this vlog.
And i love Scotland😍
„The journey is the destination“ seems to be a 1 by 1 translation of the German sayin „Der Weg ist das Ziel“ which means, it‘s not the destination but much more the journey to it, which makes the quantity of a trip. Concluding: the roadtrip is already a part of the destination because it leads to it. Which makes sense , or?
Another great video how do you get reflection free video when you film through the car window?
"The journey is the destination." - Dan Eldon
Love to see your favourite photographer in Your own countrie scotland welcomes you unless ur a tory

Hello there, i’m from overseas and planning on a road trip in Scotland. I’m just wondering, is there any website that locates the petrol stations throughout Scotland? Thank you

Yeah man, Scotland is beautiful!
Friends, what is the name of the song? The website does not work. Please, help me)!
That is some awesome moody introduction!! Love the music and the images are gorgeous!
ps : 2:43 XD
Hi Joe, yes i was there in 2011 and traveled much of the same route, and yes there weather was about the same, sun, rain..rain and yep more rain, but what an awesome place, stayed in the Inversnaid hotel right on the bank of Loch Lomond, with the waterfall outside my bedroom window, great video mate, that for putting this up.
Awesome intro dude!
1 min of actual travel shots, 12 minutes of filming in a car!
It’s titled “Driving to the highlands”…
I thought I would see the Highlands, I really didn t care to see u guys so much
Day 1 weather Joe was harsh but hopefully you got to see some of what my country has to offer. Trailer for Day 2 looked great and look forward to its release
Yeah the rain was pretty comical how ridiculous it was being. It was just the same for the rest of the trip to be honest haha!
Given how recently James Popsys was in that area, I was half expecting to see him in one of your shots by that white house and waterfall! :P Looks like a fun trip, especially with all that rain! (hey, we don't get much "quality" rain out here in Alberta it seems, just... massive downpours, or teasing clouds).
And wow, swearing from you in a video, don't see that every day!
It’s All about the Journey, Not the Destination
What a sick intro!! Any thoughts on the x-t3 joe? 😂
Cheers! I’ve got plenty of spec love for the X-T3, although yet to try one in my hands. I’m hoping a number of the features make their way over to the X-H1 soon ☺️
