Today is 02-19-22, and his works. I have a long story though. My LG G3 had the flicker issue and the paper in the back solution lasted a year, screen died on 2015. I saw yesterday RIP LG phone mfg videos so just for fun and nostalgia I tried to fix it. I do not have a heater nor thermal paste, I had a thermal pad, a light ball and good luck. I softly pushed the chip against the light ball on my room, cut a small thermal pad square and placed it, placed the paper and crossed my fingers. The screen remained black so I was sad, but then it started flickering a lot. I deleted cache and the flickering lowered even more. I deleted lots of useless apps and the screen started working properly. So I'm really happy now, it works like a charm and is a DIY solution!
This was my son's phone and he used it for another year and half and when he turned 19 I said it was time he pay for his own phone. He went and got a Samsung s9, same as I use. Mine is over 4 years old and still going strong. OLED screen burn and all. I have a new s20fe that I will use some day after this s9 dies but no sign that is going to happen any time soon. If I showed you it, you would aware it just came out of the box. Other than the icons burned on the screen. Bloody hell OLED screen.
Hey man! I just did this fix on my LG G3, two years old. I followed your instructions exactly, including the heat gun. After reflowing the solder and holding down the chip with the screwdriver, I spread a good amount of Arctic MX-4 Thermal Compound on the exposed part of the chip. I used a slice of cardstock on the camera connector, and closed it up. Seems OK so far. Thanks for this tutorial! Will follow up in a few months.
It was OK for about two weeks and then it had heat problems again. the screen flicker returned. I opened er up and noted that I did not apply enough thermal compound to contact the chip to the metal heat sink. I tried the fix again using a hair dryer but ended up damaging the board. It wont turn on. Lessons learned: Use a ton of thermal paste; the gap you want to fill is very big. Use a heatgun.
This method definitely works! In the middle of a marathon RUclips session a few days ago my LG G3 that I have owned since new suddenly developed a strange video artifact, fadeout and lockup problem. I noticed that if I pressed the power button twice the video would return for a few minutes. I had seen this video when it was posted but had forgotten until I started looking for a solution. I removed memory and sim card and covered the board with aluminum foil with only the GPU exposed. Noting that 12voltvids heated the chip for 20 seconds I gave it 30 seconds for good measure. It has worked flawlessly for 3 days now.
It worked, thanks! For others - I found that re-flowing with a heat gun was essential in order to truly fix the problem on my G3. Originally I only applied the thermal compound to the chip and added the piece of paper for pressure. Occasionally there was some flicker, but it worked fairly well for about a month, then started getting worse again. Next, I added another piece of paper in the same area but this time between the back shell of my G3 and the inner molding. Again, worked fairly well for another month, but the problem kept getting worse and worse. Finally, with nothing to lose, I decided to try re-flowing the chip with a heat gun and viola, the screen on my phone works perfectly (no flicker) - something I have not seen since the problem first appeared several months ago. Also I removed the second piece of paper that I placed inside the back shell as it was no longer needed.
One thing that bugs me is that the casing above the APU is *plastic*. It seems like a huge mistake to "heatsink" your chip to *plastic*. So instead, I inserted a folded piece of tinfoil between the chip and plastic face. I also included the "folded paper" trick (actually I used thin cardboard) to cover all the bases. (I never tried heating the chip.) This worked great, but afterwards, if I snapped closed the top right corner of my phone, I couldn't turn it on or off. I had to leave the corner of the back cover partially open. And I couldn't fully insert my phone back in its case after that because it snapped closed the corner. This bugged me, so after a couple of weeks, I decided to make the cardboard wad smaller so I could finally close my case again, and the screen fade bug returned. So I made the wad bigger again but the screen-fade problem remained. "Damn! I should have left it alone!" With no other options, I'm going to try heating the chip with a blow dryer on high for about 30 seconds. I don't know if that will get hold enough to "re-flow" the solder. This "design-flaw" makes an otherwise great phone a PIA with no resale value. I sure hope the addition of adding heat finally solves the problem. ;( Quick tip though: The tiny screw next to the camera does not need to be removed to remove the cover or PCB. It's also smaller than the other screws so this helps avoid any confusion putting the screws back.

This procedure really seems to work: I tried to fix the screen flickering several times with the paper method (+ heat transfer paste), without any success..finally i even couldn`t get the phone to activate the screen at all..it remained black after booting..now i followed this vid and used a ordinary hairdryer ;-) (since i have no heat gun..) and heated the Chip about 2 minutes on the highest heat level..after that i applied plenty of heat transfer paste on the chip..and after reassembling and switching on the phone it booted just normal (without a single flickering..) and it is working normally about a day now without any flickers..i hope it will last some time..anyway thanks for this vid! Update: Working now for a full week without a single flicker..looks good
I'm glad you added the part about the fault. It's one of my rules of repair: First, duplicate the problem. (Unless it's dangerous or might result in damaging something.)

the problem is solder balls under SoC crack from heat expasion/contraction over time. You have to do proper reflow with solder flux and HA station. This is just warming the chip a bit. And you do not press on the chip when reflowing, pressing it will screw the solder balls.
I am aware of the problem but not everyone has an air station. This fix works and worked on this phone until the phone was retired when the battery went bad. So there.
flux won't do shit as the chip is underfilled. it's engineered to fail. what shocked me the most is that a supposedly high-end phone from that time has such a piss weak chassis. everything bends and flexes... zero rigidity anywhere. no wonder this problem is so common

Didn't have a heat gun. Didn't want to use a hair dryer, and definitely didn't want to bake it in an oven as seen in some videos. My solution, a finger shaped piece of metal about 2mm thick and a domestic clothing iron. Heated the Hynix chip on off for about a minute or so, via the piece of metal, with the iron on max, mindful not to melt, burn or overly heat anything else. After it cooled down, I took off the small metal cover over the Sandisk chip and added electrically non-conductive thermal paste there, replacing the cover after. For the other side of the mobo, I applied the thermal paste to the frame, where the Hynix chip sits and also to the left and right of the Hynix. I added lots of thermal paste, and I do mean lots, but careful to avoid overflow. The Hynix chip needs loads of thermal paste, as there's actually about a 1mm gap between the chip and phone's frame. Phone worked after this and temps were actually down about 15c when gaming. Oh, and make sure the iron doesn't produce steam. Try this at your own risk.
mojoNoodlz Hair dryer won't get hot enough. A halogen lamp might work. I have done that before too. Whatever works right. This phone continued to work up to 3 days ago when it took a "2 foot drop" according to my son and the screen shattered. So now he is crying. Welcome to the real world. That will cost him about 500 for a new phone. Welcome to reality where phones cost real money. Not these subsidized phones from the phone company. The phone he really wants is over 1000.00
More efficient fix is use a copper shim ( not aluminum foil ) you can add compound if you choose the copper shim should be enough help absorb the extra heat. use a heat gun at around 300F for about 5 to 8 seconds and it will be fine. if you boot the device and the flicker is still present you didn't heat it enough plus allow for cooling. also placing paper on that connector has nothing to do with the flicker problem the shim will take care of the tension needed. I use a ( Milwaukee ) MHT PRODUCTS Model 750 Heat Gun 1.680 Watts. max heat 750F But nonetheless this is a fantastic video with very good detailed information rather then someone playing music. 2 Thumbs up to 12voltvids (look in to them copper shims they are life saver they come in different sizes created for CPU & GPU works perfect on cell devices. approx 22NM size. )
Yeah, kinda old I know, I have 2 lg g3 dropped into a box because of that issue, never took the time to look and fix it, I was looking for some old phones so I can use it to connect to a speaker with Alexa app and found my G3s, fixed one of ‘em using an electric oven lol and some foil paper sheet between the chip and the case heat sink for heat dissipation, it’s perfect right now 👌🏻
What EXACTLY is the problem here? Is it the SOC overheating or is it a connector problem that the paper fix on the camera connector addresses? Both? Does LG acknowledge this design/manufacturing defect and what will they do to remediate the defect?
It is a bad design. Soc overheats. Melts solder on chip. Heating reflows solder. Your mileage may vary. This fix lasted for 8 months until the phone got dropped one time too many and screen broke. Dumb son got a new phone and dropped it breaking it within a month so he had to buy yet another one.
I initially did it with thermal paste, but I opened it up and stuck a piece of thermal pad in there to better drain off the heat.The paper was just regular 20lb photo copy paper folded over itself 6X so it was bout 3mm think. Enough to put pressure on the board, and squeeze the chip against the thermal pad, which of course squeezes to the front cabinet heat sink. Been over a month now, and that phone is being abused all day. My son lives on that thing and every waking moment he is on it except for when he is at work. So far so good. The critics said it wouldn't last 2 days. Well it has been 35 since I did this and it is going strong at this point so I am pretty confident that it is fixed, at least until something else breaks on it.
I kind of had a similar problem with an electric oven. It kept tripping the breaker. So I only had to shut off the power and tighten up one of the screws. Now the circuits workng .
This trick kinda works, i think? After installing the heat sink and first boot, the phone heats up to 97°C, but than I turned on flight mode and let it sleep for 3 minutes, the phone temperature reduce to 48°C. Model: F400s with lineage Os 18.1
Well it has been longer than 2 days, and it is working fine. My son lives on that phone and has not had a single issue with it since doing this 10 days ago. Other devices I have fixed with the heat gun trick have been running for years. Your mileage may vary, because I have been doing this for a long time I have gotten quite good at judging how long to heat for based on visual, small of the flux ect. Time will tell how long it works, but if the boy gets 6 months or a year out of it then he will be happy. By then he will want a new phone. So there!
Easier way to fix it is just to put standard thermopad, I cut out squere from sheet, size of that soc And simple stick on, that was 2 months ago and still strong, flickering screen gone and temp. Drop about 20-25C.
Hi. I have been working on my tv is an old color tv. N I found a 150k resistor is bad I does read on the meter nothing at all am not finding a 150k anywhere. So I was wondering if it is possible to connect a 100k and 50k in series. can it work? I didn't try it. If u can help me out that will be great. I love your videos by the way
12voltvids thank you. Am sorry I didn't mention. The bad resistor is a metal oxide. And am only getting axial carbon film fixed resistors with. The 100 and 50k values. Am sorry I forgot to mention but Will that work in place ?
Makes no difference. 150K is 150K no matter what you put in it. Metal oxide is a more precision type, and generally a flameproof, but 150K is 150K no matter how you get there.
OK after 2 days I've got the same problem (after trying the other tip on pressing the camera connector) . Let's see now after baking the board for 10 minutes on a 200 degree celcius oven (because I don't have a equipment like this :) )
This worked for 5 months until the phone got dropped and the screen shattered. Got new phone for the kid and he dropped that one within 2 weeks and broke the screen on that. So I said sorry Charlie, no new phone for you. Go buy your own.
I don't work on phones. The only reason I did this one is it was my son's and he was using the bad phone as an excuse as to why he shouldn't pay for his cell phone bill which is still in my name. So to get him to pay his rather large phone bill I fixed his phone. I am counting the days till he turns 19 believe me.

LG = Life's Garbage. It was a terrible phone, but it lasted for quite awhile after this fix. It was my sons phone, but he moved on. Once he turned 19 I said "OK time to get your own phone" which he did and got a good one, a Samsung S9.
This was in reference to those that say 'Why don't you get a proper air station." Well if I was in the business, and did this for a living I probably would, but I am not in the business. Besides, 95% of people that are going to attempt a repair like this also do not have a hot air station. The only ones that do are people in the business. I want to show that anyone can do these type of repairs using inexpensive equipment that they may already have, and if you are carefull you can do it safely. I wouldn't attempt this on a customers device. I wouldn't offer to repair a cell phone, or a tablet for someone. I will only do this on my own equipment, that I have already accepted as a total loss anyway, so if it doesn't work no big deal, but if it does then I have saved money by not having to buy a new one. So far my odds are really good, even though everyone says that it can't possibly fix it.

I have an old mototola I use for my public phone number, as nobody knows my private cell or home number. I run fongo on it and just link it to my hotspot if I need to take it out such as when i sell stuff on craigslist. It only needs charged about once a week

what thing do you apply is pasta or what?
is that thermal paste? would thermal paste work? and how thick does that wedge need to be, if you could compare it to something like a credit card?

A heat transfer pad under the chip would have prevented it.
funny thing is that there is a square inset in the heatsink, maybe intended for a heat transfer pad?

Easier way to fix it is just to put standard thermopad, I cut out squere from sheet, size of that soc
And simple stick on, that was 2 months ago and still strong, flickering screen gone and temp. Drop about 20-25C.

Hi. I have been working on my tv is an old color tv. N I found a 150k resistor is bad I does read on the meter nothing at all am not finding a 150k anywhere. So I was wondering if it is possible to connect a 100k and 50k in series. can it work? I didn't try it. If u can help me out that will be great.

Yes a 100k and 50k in series will give you a 150k resistor.
12voltvids thank you. Am sorry I didn't mention. The bad resistor is a metal oxide. And am only getting axial carbon film fixed resistors with. The 100 and 50k values. Am sorry I forgot to mention but Will that work in place ?
Makes no difference. 150K is 150K no matter what you put in it.
Metal oxide is a more precision type, and generally a flameproof, but 150K is 150K no matter how you get there.

OK after 2 days I've got the same problem (after trying the other tip on pressing the camera connector) . Let's see now after baking the board for 10 minutes on a 200 degree celcius oven (because I don't have a equipment like this :) )
This worked for 5 months until the phone got dropped and the screen shattered. Got new phone for the kid and he dropped that one within 2 weeks and broke the screen on that. So I said sorry Charlie, no new phone for you. Go buy your own.

I don't work on phones. The only reason I did this one is it was my son's and he was using the bad phone as an excuse as to why he shouldn't pay for his cell phone bill which is still in my name. So to get him to pay his rather large phone bill I fixed his phone. I am counting the days till he turns 19 believe me.

My g3 phone gets so hot that it's chip keeps on reflowing all the time..no need of a heat gun :p
LG = Life's Garbage. It was a terrible phone, but it lasted for quite awhile after this fix. It was my sons phone, but he moved on. Once he turned 19 I said "OK time to get your own phone" which he did and got a good one, a Samsung S9.

This was in reference to those that say 'Why don't you get a proper air station." Well if I was in the business, and did this for a living I probably would, but I am not in the business. Besides, 95% of people that are going to attempt a repair like this also do not have a hot air station. The only ones that do are people in the business. I want to show that anyone can do these type of repairs using inexpensive equipment that they may already have, and if you are carefull you can do it safely. I wouldn't attempt this on a customers device. I wouldn't offer to repair a cell phone, or a tablet for someone. I will only do this on my own equipment, that I have already accepted as a total loss anyway, so if it doesn't work no big deal, but if it does then I have saved money by not having to buy a new one. So far my odds are really good, even though everyone says that it can't possibly fix it.
It will work properly for only few days... or a week top... and then it will become worse

Still working fine. I am sure it will break again because all phones break down after a few years but the battery will probably be done by then too. Been over 3 months now and working fine, and it is under very heavy use. My son has that thing in his hands probably 20 hours a day.

I have an old mototola I use for my public phone number, as nobody knows my private cell or home number. I run fongo on it and just link it to my hotspot if I need to take it out such as when i sell stuff on craigslist. It only needs charged about once a week
@@12voltvids Mine seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it can last for a week. Sometimes it seems to hold a charge but for a few days. You never know.
If you don't have a heat gun, just put the board in the microwave.
Sadly I'm sure plenty of people tried this...
