  • Andrew is joined by Michael Diaz, Curator of History and Uniforms at the West Point Museum. Michael took out of the collection vault several special items that belonged to West Point graduate General Alexander S. Webb. These special items were things presented to him by his men and by his country. Enjoy this story of leadership through artifacts not normally on display to the public.

A relative of mine was the Adjutant General for the Philadelphia brigade and was by Webb's side for most of the battle. Besides a few errands he was sent on during the fighting, iv found that he was with Webb when he tried to grab the 72nd Pennsylvania's flag from the barer and even tried to do it himself as it was his old regiment. He also reportedly captured Armistead's pistol but passed it off to another soldier for safe keeping.

Back in the day, when senior officers shared the dangers their men faced, rather than hiding in some hideout many miles from the action, and then demanding respect 😅

My regiment, 139th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment, had one man recive the Cogressional Medal of Honor for being Honor Guard for Lincolns body. But it has ben stolen now for quite a few years and we still have yet to find it.

I'm just curious about the officer photo whenever the photo is taken for the officer or group I noticed that some of them like to look to the side instead of looking at the camera directly I wonder why?

It could be for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it hides a wound, although that is not the case here. This is probably photographer, talking with the subject and making a decision together. I’m pretty sure the photo is for the Officer. Might have been shortly after he promoted.

Why does the Goat Head look an awfully lot like the Order of the Eastern Star's sigma?
