I live in England and I work at a country house over here and I am loving these after show episodes! thank you for filming and recording them they are such a valuable resource for me as I know very little about the high society of America from this time and I am loving The Gilded Age. I hope to visit The Frick in Pittsburg and NYC someday to see these spaces first hand!
Thanks for all the history on Lyndhurst. Just this week I learned that the Westminster Kennel Club has relocated the dog show to the Lyndhurst Estate. Such a positive change for the dogs, exhibitors and attendees, and mid-June is so much better than February.

I wish instead of showing the lazy stereotype of struggling African Americans this show had gone further to show some of the ACTUAL African American elite families that existed at the time in New York. An example would be The Downing dynasty, who literally created the concept of Oyster fine downing houses in New York City and were fabulously wealthy as well as patronised by the city's leading families and European royals. The Downing children actually went to school in Europe and when Thomas Downing died, he was one of the wealthiest men in the entirety of NYC.

For Mr. Morris, however, that was very hard to watch. I mean he went on his knees in front of Mr. Russell literally begging with all the aldermen present in the room.
I agree. I think Mrs. Morris, on some level, thought she had the upper hand. I can't help but wonder if she didn't understand the true peril she and her family are in and how bleak her future will be if she doesn't convince Mrs. Russell to change her husband's mind. All of these people are seriously brutal.
@@msj7872 Agreed. I think she thought she would come down and ask Mrs Russell to stop her husband and bc of Mrs M's social standing Mrs R would cave. But Mrs R had a point...who was Mrs M to come ask such a thing when she snubbed Mrs R at every turn?
LOVE your Aftershow and the discussion! It occurred to me that with Mr. Morris' financial situation and circumstances surrounding his death would leave Mrs. Morris being cast out of elite society and now becoming one of the people her charity would have to help.
Thanks so much! You're absolutely right that Mr. Morris' decisions have left Mrs. Morris in a very difficult position. It will be interesting to see how many of her old money friends stick by her (or don't) in the coming episodes.
First, I am not a huge fan of Downton Abbey. I would watch it with my partner (who is a huge fan). But, it wasn't must-see television for me. I am hooked on the Gilded Age. My only hope is we will get more of the downstairs life, and in the future venture out into the world. I would like to see the effects of this rush to industrialization had on workers and the poverty they had to live under.
Agreed! A true understanding of the Gilded Age requires an understanding of how all of the growth, wealth, and progress impacted people other than the wealthy industrialists. We're hoping we'll see more of that in the show as time goes on.
Totally agree with the hope to see more of life of the downstair staff. Really enjoying The Gilded Age. I was also a fan of Downton (caught on after it went off the air).

George Russell offered the aldermen an opportunity to make a lot of money. They were the ones who turned on him and tried to ruin him.
