    ======================
    Roberto Durán Samaniego (born June 16, 1951) is a Panamanian former professional boxer who competed from 1968 to 2001. He held world championships in four weight classes: lightweight, welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight, as well as reigns as the undisputed and lineal lightweight champion, and the lineal welterweight champion. He is also the second boxer to have competed over a span of five decades, the first being Jack Johnson. Durán was known as a versatile, technical brawler and pressure fighter, which earned him the nickname of "Manos de Piedra" ("Hands of Stone") for his formidable punching power and excellent defense.
    In 2002, Durán was voted by The Ring magazine as the fifth greatest fighter of the last 80 years, while boxing historian Bert Sugar rated him as the eighth greatest fighter of all time. The Associated Press voted him as the best lightweight of the 20th century, with many considering him the greatest lightweight of all time. Durán finally retired for good in January 2002 at age 50, following a car crash in Argentina in October 2001, after which Durán had required life saving surgery. Durán had previously retired in November 1980, June 1984 and August 1998, only to change his mind. Durán ended his career with a professional record of 119 fights, 103 wins, and 70 knockouts. From May 1971 up until his second fight against Sugar Ray Leonard in November 1980, as well as in his fight against Wilfred Benítez in January 1982, Durán was trained by legendary boxing trainer Ray Arcel.

    Back in 1976 I was an amateur boxer working out at he old Erie's boxing Center on West 7th street ( no longer there). We had a boxer Lou Bizzarro who was undefeated and managed to snag a fight with Duran here in our town Erie Pa.. Duran came to town about 10 days before the fight and he trained at the center with us guys.We were rank amateurs with some small skills but we were anxious to see him workout with us which he did. He was the worlds undisputed light weight champion and we got to see him train every day. The guy was solid steel and was the fastest skip rope and,and speed bag guy I have ever seen. He brought all his sparring partners with him and they were all heavy weights. He destroyed those guys even though they were wearing helmets. He hit so hard they would crumple, and I never doubted that they felt each and every punch. One day at training his manager asked us if we wanted to spar with him for 3 rounds. There were 3-4 of us and it took less than 1 second before we said NO. We all valued our lives too much to get in with him. He went on to knock out Lou in round 14, and Lou only lasted until the 14th round because he was on his bicycle the whole fight. Bizzaro was undefeated at the time but he wasn't really any good and had been set up with a number of easy fights to puff up his record. When Duran finally caught him in the 14th round it was over quick, and Bizzaro never knew what hit him. Duran was a killer back then and he punished anyone that he came in contact with. You can see the whole fight here on y/t if you want. P.S. I'm glad I didn't get in the ring with him because he didn't know how to dial it back. Every sparring session was a mini prize fight to him.

    For me Duran and Salvador Sanchez were the two best fighters I've seen within the last 40 years. Both were HIGHLY skilled and absolutely ultra tough as nails. Duran was the very definition of a boxer puncher with some of the best defensive skills I've ever seen for such an aggressive fighter. His feints alone should be mandatory learning for aspiring fighters. He had an( only Hearns a freakish puncher stopped him)extremely durable chin, heart, excellent reflexes, superb balance, anticipation of what his opponent was going to do, top notch grappling skills with beautiful street fighting techniques he mixed in there as well.
    When he was on and focused which was 95 percent of the time he was just a terror to face.

    In my opinion Roberto Duran is the greatest fighter of all time, because of the above information in the description. Duran probably would have reigned has the Welterweight champion for years, but, his biggest enemy was himself, he liked to party a little too much. Heck, even way past his prime at 38 years old he faced a beast of a middleweight in Iran Barkley and beat him! When Duran was motivated he could not be beat. I followed his career my whole life, Duran would fight anybody and would move up in weight to do it. Duran is one of my heroes for sure. God bless Roberto Duran!

      @Roll Tide I did not say he was victimized. I did not say he did not have a weakness, everyone has a weakness, I did not ignore his bad fights. I stated true facts that are provable. The only speculation is my statement that he would have reigned for a long time as a welterweight which based on his ability and his past reign as a lightweight.

      @@BigShotMartin Monzon never got out of his comfort zone. While Duran as a natural lightweight went up 4 weightclasses, beat SRL, Davey Moore and Iran Barkley, gave the best middleweight of all time Marvin Hagler(is hands down a way better fighter than Monzon) a competitive fight all while being smaller *and* older than them. A 45 year old Duran gave a young Hector Camacho one hell of a fight. And the guy fought into his 50s. Duran is a class act.

    Most modern boxing fans don't understand how good Duran was. He didn't just jump 2,3,4 weight classes to face guys bigger than him, he moved up at a time when there were legit all-time-greats in between 147-160 and held his own. So it's not like Pacquiao beating Antonio Margarito and Keith Thurman, it would be like Pacquiao moving up to 147 when it was a shark tank that included Tito Trinidad, Prime DelaHoya, Ike Quartey, Pernell Whitaker, actually no, because those guys weren't quite as good as Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, and Benitez.

    Incredible fighter. It was the food that did his career in though. He didn't hardly train but to lose weight for the Hearns fight and the second Leonard fight.

    The world have never seen a fighter like Duran and never will again .He is in a class all by himself...If him and Mayweather fought in there prime, I world pick Duran to beat him...Duran came up from light after ruling the lightweight division for like 10 years. In went up and weight and beat Leonard he was just to strong and tuff for Leonard and they knew the only way they could beat Duran and a rematch was to not give him time to train...Forget there third fight by the time they gave Duran a rematch he was way past his prime..To this day if you ask me was the best out of Duran and Leonard. Duran all day long.

      Leonard can fight duran's fight, duran could never fight Leonard's fight. Leonard more versatile than Duran. LEONARD ALL DAY!!!

    What a beast. No way Floyd is on the legends levels. Boxing in its golden age would disgrace the current greats even have them fear the past legenda if they were around in their primes.

    Fue 5 veces campeón mundial. Su último título fue a los 49 años de la National Boxing Asociation (NBA) contra un irlandés, pero los expertos de los medios no le cuentan sino 4 títulos. Igualmente fue campeón a los 38 años derrotando por la vía del knockout a Iran Barkley quién se había coronado derrotando también por la vía del formol a Tomas Hearns, el mismo que antes derrotó a Durán. En pocas palabras cuando Durán se entrenaba en serio para un combate, no le ganaba nadie

    My Favorite to ever lace em Up!
    The Best in my opinion (as far as the complete package goes!) and i’m willing to debate anybody ! And aside from the ADVERSITY!! (Which is heavy enough!!)
    calling this man a “brawler” is just a complete insult to the Sport of Boxing Period!
    This mans ring IQ and arsenal is far Greater than one can imagine
