Interesting story how the Rabbitohs got their name. During the early 1900s, players from the South Sydney rugby league club would hunt and sell rabbit meat as a side hustle. They would sometimes show up to a footy game covered in rabbit blood, and the crowd from the opposing team would mockingly chant "Rabbitohs" 😂. Low and behold, the Rabbitohs were born. Love your podcast btw, new sub here.

Wow. I didn't know about that. I'm assuming your team is the Rabbitohs? Thanks for watching and we appreciate your sub!

Honestly, NRL doesn't care about viewership in the American market. They care about gambling dollars. USA gambling regulation is mostly by state. Nevada is really relaxed. Also Australia has been regulating gambling more, as in the US gambling is starting to deregulate especially when coming to gambling on sports. Hence in the past five years every American has been swamped with adds for gambling apps for sports betting. Anyway just found your channel, def going to sub!

Appreciate the view and Sub! Didnt quite think the gambling angle. Regardless for that to be a factor you will still require viewership to be a certain level right?

You can sell your sport without making the people watching the game not understanding the game. They are selling the NRL to the American, not state origin. Number one reason why people don't watch sports is because people understand the rules. For example, cricket or golf.

Thanks for watching mate. Agree u can sell the sport without the rules being a major focus - for a while at least!
The state of Origin comment was more about this version of the NRL being our best product - lets showcase our best product to the world if we want a chance of it catching on!

At the moment you could argue that rugby league is the number one sport in Australia. Rugby union is dying in Australia, Cricket is only relevant in the country when there is a test match.

I think AFL might have something to say about that? I 100% agree on Rugby union and Cricket though.

I think the NRL did a fantastic job promoting the game. There was definitely more pros then cons. I had more and more FOMO the closer the game got.
The Russel Crowe rule video might a bit bland to some, but I thought it explained well for a 5 minute video.
Here is another ad they had which was fantastic.

Thanks for watching mate. Def agree that they could have done a punchier job with the Russel Crowe advert - early indications however seem like it was success
