I have a GSA with 36k miles on it since July 21 so I tour quite a bit. I test rode the 1300 ASA. For me it’s 3 gear boxes in one and it’s how you use it with the engine modes depending on what sort of riding you want. Automatic + Road mode is very relaxed low revs, great around town, relaxed motorway and general riding. Automatic + Dynamic is when you want to ride briskly, the bike revs out more and downshifts more just like I would normally ride. Manual mode + either rode or dynamic is brilliant. I’ve just sold and S1000XR and in manual mode the gear shifting on the 1300 is as close as you could get to a proper quickshifter as on the XR. In manual mode you have absolutely full control over gear shifting. Hill starts are the easiest ever. Slow moving is easier without the clutch.
You’ve got ask yourself ….. how often do you use your clutch on a bike with shift assist or a quickshifter? ( such as your Ducati )Starting off, hill starts, really sharp hairpins. So this ASA makes sense and if you don’t like the gear it’s selected, just use your foot and change it. For touring it’ll be great and seeing as I’ve ordered a new GSA ASA and am heading from Ireland to Romania next year it’ll get a good test.

A wealth of information, thank you. I think what people don’t realise is that you still have full manual option. It’s one of those things, until you try it you won’t understand how good it is

Do you think the ASA system will be incorporated into models like the F800GS or will it only be used with boxer engines? It would be very interesting if it were incorporated into almost the entire range.
