I think Snape is depicted as much more likable (or at least forgivable) in the movies than in the books so people who haven't read the books in a long time (or ever) think of Snape as the movie Snape and have much more sympathy for him. Or the surprise ending regarding his character makes people forget about his previous behavior. I LOVE him as a character but agree that he is over romanticized as a person. I do applaud his bravery in his adult life and fully sympathize for his hard childhood and his broken heart over Lilly but he is terrible and unfair to many of his students and can't be fully forgiven for his behavior despite my sympathies. I've always disagreed with Harry giving his son the middle name Severus, like just because you understand Snape now and applaud aspects of his character doesn't change the fact that you guys always hated each other

Ooh, your response to the film adaptation question is illuminating. I can’t think of a book adaptation that I’d way was “better” than the book, but thinking in terms of “would I rather reread the book or rewatch the film” is helpful. My response for that would be Hugo. I loved the film and the book (The Invention of Hugo Cabret) equally, but if I could only re-experience one, it would be the film. I happened to meet the author, Brian Selznick (who is so kind and wonderful), and he told me he was heavily involved in the film, which I now see makes perfect sense!

Of the books you talked about that I have read, I totally agreed with your opinion about Snape, think it's a shame you didn't appreciate Rebecca, and completely agree about Outlander.
I enjoyed the first four Outlander books, but I can definitely see the abusive elements you referred to, and having since learned more about Scottish and British history, it gets up my nose the way Gabaldon frames the Jacobite Rebellion as a Scottish vs. English thing when there were actually pro-Stuart and pro-Hanoverian factions in all of the countries of the British Isles, and it was actually about absoltism and the Divine Right of Kings vs constitutional monarchy, Catholicism vs Protestantism, and feudalism vs the modern world of commerce, trade, and industry. At no point does she mention that the Scottish Enlightment was going on at the same time and that when Bonnie Prince Charlie and his army arrived in Edinburgh, they were confronted by protesting university students.

Honestly, not reading Outlander is the right choice. I read the first 4 books (and attempted the 5th) and while the first one was interesting and fun and drew me in, the books kept getting longer and longer and the plot got thinner and thinner. Like, seriously, you'd read 300 pages and FUCKING NOTHING would happen, not a single damn inch of plot movement. By the time I started the 5th book, I was basically hate-reading, and you just can't do that with a 1400+ page book. I feel like the author doesn't really care about her readers and takes it for granted that she can actually put out a book that long that is so slow and empty and boring, but her readers will buy it because they're hooked. That really put me off. Also, where the heck are her editors? Anyway, yeah, don't read that series :P

  • @leighhauserman9549

What bothers me even more is that any time Harry thinks Snape is being shady Lupin, and others would tell Harry that he's inherited an old grude, as if Snape has done nothing to influence Harry's opinion of Snape. Harry didn't even know about James and Sirius's grudge with Snape until after Snape had abused Harry enough to hate Snape on his own.

I completely agree with you on The Power. It was fine but nothing mind blowing like the hype made it out to be.
I also agree with you on Outlander and I'm not from Scotland. It is a romance book at its core. I actually read the first one and when read through the lens of it being a romance book, it's fine. I tried to move on to the second book in the series and DNFd it very quickly.

100% agree about snape. And outlander. Ugh. I read 200 pages in the first book and NOTHING happened. I was done when I hit some stupid sexism. It's a very long drawn out "I'm going to change this dude bro into a nice man" romance. Nope.

Hate the 'not like other girls' trope too! Also agree on Snape. Popular book that i "hate" would have to be The Lovely Bones. It was just so unenjoyable to read. Also, Hot Milk and Idaho. Those two were just books where i really didn't care about the characters and somehow the writing made the story feel distant. A book that's definitely love hate which i really liked is Uprooted! One thing I never hear people talking about with Outlander is the thinly veiled homophobia. There was some enjoyable stuff but that and the abusive aspects of the main relationship put me right off. I think it does ok when it comes to the Scottish stuff (although I say that as a non Scottish person). Probably some of the rebellion stuff is romanticised. There's definitely a lot of talk about tartan.

I'm with you on The Power. I really enjoyed the narrative style but don't think the foundational elements of the book offered us anything particularly revelatory? Power changes and corrupts regardless of physiology.

I am in such agreement with your opinion on Snape, I can't stand the whole gushing over "Always" when he was awful to everyone around him (and I'm saying that as a Slytherin). I enjoyed Outlander but I know what you mean about historical fiction just being 'off' sometimes when they're written by authors from different countries, I get that way especially with American authors write about medieval England and it just reads like an MGM film prop list 😷

Drinking By My Shelf I just will never understand why people are so obsessed with him and his ‘romantic’ gesture. Is this the modern Heathcliff and Cathy ‘romance’ 😂

Adaptation that I like better than the book? The Handmaid’s Tale, hands down. I DNFed the book. It was so dry and I couldn’t get more than halfway through. Made me sad because the show is the reason I picked the book up.

I hated Outlander! Read about a fifth and had to give up. I found it quite boring and very stereotyping of Scotland. But so many people seem to love it so maybe I was missing something!

Outlander kinda weirds me out...I can’t get over how the main character has an intense intimate relationship with her husband’s ancestor. It makes me feel weird :/

I tried Oulander twice and DNF'd it twice. I do not understand why people like it. The characters are dull. The writing is dull. There's abuse, and adultery that we're just supposed to accept no questions asked and ... no. You're definitely not alone on this one.

Most people think I am odd because I don't like Harry Potter or Twilight. I read one book from each series then gave up. I bought The Hunger Games set of books but never read those either. I haven't seen the films for any of these either. I'm not good at reading books that are in a series or that follow on. It is usually too long to wait for the next book to come out and I get bored of waiting. The thing that annoys me most in books is when the author uses the same plot over and over again in every book just changes the characters and setting. It is so boring after a while. You know the outcome before you get half way through the book. A book that I really loved but no one else seemed to was The Muse by Jessie Burton. I gave it five stars. I thought it was amazing but everyone else panned it. I loved the Charlene Harris True Blood series of books. They were easy to read and I liked the characters. I liked the tv show also.
