    There is so much romance in other genres that I always use the other genre as it's primary and then maybe have a romance section within the primary genre depending on how many I have.

    I am one of those people who derives a ridiculous amount of satisfaction seeing the colophons from various imprints lined up next to each other on the shelf - so I have a "shelve by imprint" and then "otherwise shelve by genre" (unless Austen, Shakespeare, Winnie-the-Pooh, or a signed edition - LOL, I am ridiculous) system

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  2 месяца назад +1

      No I totally agree with this! For years my books were all arranged by publisher aha. And it does work with genre a lot too since imprints have trends in what they publish!!

    My advice on organising when it comes to things like retelling/crossing genre stuff would be that findability is more important than accuracy. I'm a librarian and this has held true in the workplace (health and academic libraries) and at home. So for example at home I have a section for poetry that lives in one room, but my copy of the poetry collection Soho lives upstairs with my queer culture and history section, because if I want to read it I know where it is more easily than hauling through all the poetry shelves - which are already overcrowded.

      For a work example in one place I worked used Dewey, but that meant the books on dementia ended up behind the paediatric section, in the hospital where I worked the Drs would be looming at general medicine for elderly medicine and not think to go all the way past paeds so we "adapted" the system to make sure the people who would want those books could find them

    Hi Jean, Well ... where you are now I will be in a months time as my husband and I are moving from a house to a condo. My library will no longer be in the basement but instead will take over the space that is meant to be the master bedroom. Above ground!!!! Plus the back wall of the dining room area, plus another wall in the living area, plus ... eh ... well ... you get the picture. Currently my library is taking up close to 60 boxes and that's just books! When it comes to unpacking, well I've always divided my books by my two main favourite genres which is fantasy and historical fiction but in our new place I may have to rethink that system. My plan for now is to just get the bookcases (old and new) in place and then empty those boxes!!! Oh how I am looking forward to emptying those boxes!! I miss my library so much!!!! Once that's done I can take my time and move things around as I see fit. I figure that that will be a nice project for the winter months. I look forward to seeing you stock your bookshelves and maybe even decorating your space as well. Note: I'm sure that our movers will love all those boxes marked BOOKS! Or, as we packed more and more boxes and began to get a little ... um ... punch drunk ... MORE BOOKS!!! LOOK< BOOKS!!! YES, IT's BOOKS!!! and of course inevitably ... BETCHA CAN'T GUESS WHAT'S IN HERE!!!! Sigh!!! Thanks for the inspiration Jean. And good luck!!!!

    I split my books up by genre but when books could fit in various sections I tend to just go by vibe, whatever place "feels right"for that particular book. I enjoy seeing all my oxford world classics together and all my penguins together even if it separate a book from its genre section and if you have a ton by one author i would just consider having a seperate devon just for them.

    I love how you're slowly losing your sanity because of all the book organisational questions. xD Trust me, it's a work in progress. Even if you sort something "wrong" you'll notice it not feeling quite right by living with the shelves for a few days or weeks and you can always reorganize. I know one wants to make it right the first time but sometimes you just don't know what feels right before trying it out. I cannot wait for an office- or house-tour once you're finished. I'm really excited for you! :)

  • @Luna-po5ui

    I put Romantasy into fantasy, since i see it more of a subgenre of fantasy than romance (and then you don't have have to play the fun game, which you alluded to, of deciding How Much Romance tips a book from Fantasy with Romance to Romantasy. Gah!). For me, a Grace Draven book looks much better on a shelf next to my other fantasy books than it would, say, next to a Talia Hibbert book and a slew of contemporary romances. (But I also separate my historical romance from my contemporary romance)

    • @Luna-po5ui
      @Luna-po5ui 2 месяца назад +2

      My advice in general is to not get too hyper-specific with genres and dividing books into them, or you'll do your head in! The Vegetarian, for example, would just be contemporary or literary fiction, regardless of inspiration, UNLESS you are dead keen on a mythology-inspired shelf specifically. Keep your big classics collections together. I can't wait to see more of your house and the ways you two decorate it, whether with paint or your big gorgeous collection of books!

      Honestly thinking about covers might be the best argument I’ve heard. Romantasy spines are going to fit better next to fantasy aha. I think that decides it thank you!

    I actually don’t have a romance section. I split my romance books between their other genres: romantasy in fantasy, sci-romance in sci-fi, contemporary romance in contemporary and historical romance in historical. My thinking is because romance can be in any genre.

  • @ellenkarlsson9490
    @ellenkarlsson9490 2 месяца назад +2

    1. I would put fantasy romance between fantasy and romance, so you get a nice transition from one genre to another.
    2. Retellings are retellings. If you were to include every book that has drawn inspiration from myths or fairy tales you might as well just put all the books you own in one big pile. I would sort the retellings after myth/fairy tale. (Or maybe not, because Jennifer Saint's books look really good next to each other.)
    3. You've done a PhD, written multiple books, and this is your first office. Did I hear that correctly? Like, HOW???

  • @WinterKnits
    @WinterKnits 2 месяца назад +3

    Might it be helpful to categorize be author rather than individual book? For example I would categorize Grace Draven as a fantasy author & place all of her books in a fantasy section. I would categorize Ali Smith as literary fiction author & place all of her books in that section.

    • @JeansThoughts
      @JeansThoughts  2 месяца назад +2

      This is actually such a good point! Jeanette Winterson too has done some genre blurring but I don't really want to separate her books so they'll stay in lit fic I think.

    I think I would give romantacy it’s own section if you have enough books for that and otherwise make it a subsection of romance. I’m a strong supporter of organisation systems that only make sense to you though
    (I don’t own any though and my bookshelves are mostly organised by where the author is from)

  • @ngairepowell2022
    @ngairepowell2022 2 месяца назад

    I put romantacy in fantasy, and keep romance for contemporary or historical romance. I organise bookcase by genre, and then go by shelf as sub genre. I also have a bookcases for favourite authors/series.

  • @ghouling1111

    For me I organised by genre but my fairytale retellings are separated in own section, my genres are also 'Greek, demons, witch's, elves, historical, thriller, dark academia, vampires, and a few others 😅... so I go by what's in the books along side genres lol

  • @eleonoralydia8884
    @eleonoralydia8884 2 месяца назад

    For romantacy what I would recommend is to consider which of the two genres you like and read the most and put it there

  • @dragonrambles
    @dragonrambles 2 месяца назад

    I'd put romantasy with the romance - where it used to be shelved in bookshops and how it used to be labelled in libraries. Remove the romance and you don't have much book left. The fantasy world is just a setting, like the modern day or historical real world. Whereas romance subplots in fantasy novels just add realism, like romance in thrillers (note, romantic suspense would also be put into the romance section for me)

    Before you try to paint over the scuffs get 91% rubbing alcohol and a cotton ball and very gently dab-wipe over the scuff only. In many cases it will remove scuffs and not harm the paint. If it does smear the paint just paint over it. No worse off.
    If I am undecided where a book should go category and genre I check on my library website. Just see what they classified it as and I go with that. I try to follow the Library system as much as possible or just makes things easier.

    I recently separated my sci-fi and fantasy from my literary/historical/etc books, and honestly I had the same struggles hahaha. In the end I've put retellings in with the fantasy, partly because there was space over there?? But then I've put Outlander in the other one because yes there's time travel, but it's mostly historical romance to me?? So hard hahah
