This is really a great tutorial. In my first days getting started with bonsai, I bought a bunch of seeds and planted them up, and now I have about 30 seedlings in their first year. Later I found a handful of comments saying not to bother with seed growing bonsai; but this video really encouraged me to keep going with them. It might be a decade or two before they look like much, but the complete control over the development process you demonstrated is really exciting and you clearly showed how to take the tree from a tiny sapling to a majestic work of art. Thank you!
@Octopus I lost some of them over the year. It's hard to be sure why, but my guess is that I overwatered them in the potting soil I was using. The new seeds I'm starting are going in more coarse soil, mostly pumice. I think that would be my biggest advice from what I've learned this year: don't suffocate the roots, haha. Using a free draining medium also helps access the roots for the first root working. What are you growing?
@Octopus I've been experimenting with different fertilizers. I think what I've settled on for now is waiting until the roots are established first, and then applying consistent low-power organic fertilizer. I'm less concerned with making them grow fast; it's more about making sure they have the tools they need.
I agree, also the point of growing from seed, some trees are just not sold in sertain countries, due to laws that i still dont get (unless its a poisonous plant). And some trees are just not able to grow in some areas outside like, african or tropical trees if you live in greenland for example
Wow, at first I thought we all know it. But this guys, how he is getting all the tree at different stage, wonderful. You are great. Thank you Bonsai empire.
Now that's called master class.i red many articles and watched videos about pines.but this truly an eye opener.very calm and simple.thankyou Jonas and bonsai empire.
Jonas has the best english pronunciation that i´ve never hear in my life, easy to understand even for a not-native english speaker like me. And hes knowledge of bonsai pine is mesmerising. Great video.
Jonas happened to have a masters degree in English from a very good university. He also speaks a couple of foreign languages fairly well. One of those languages is Japanese.
Jonas is such a good educator - and his method from seed to top quality bonsai is world class. Thoroughly enjoyed hearing this. Some of the best advice I’ve ever enjoyed online.
Thanks Jonas..you are best teacher ,i bought a dozen of 2 years old JBP for resale in my nursery, and remain 5 tree now after Saw your video i brought all remain trees to my house and try to develop became mature Shohin...and now i knew how to do..greeting from Indonesia 👍👍
This is a great video! I hope it helps more people learn about this process. My philosophy is for every yamadori, I find, I should start a bonsai from seed as well. It's important to get bonsai from multiple sources so the generations after us will have plenty to enjoy still!
@@JonasDupuich sorry for the shameless plug but here's how they look now: shumibonsai.wordpress.com/2020/11/20/japanese-black-pine-from-seed-2018-end-of-year-3/ btw, love the podcast too :)
Great video! I loved seeing the different stages of development, and how to care for each. It helps give a picture of what my seed might look like in 5 years.
This video is so good that since it was released I keep coming back year after year to compare my progression, very educational... Thank you so much Jonas and the whole Empire team...
Oh wow! Jonas really is a great educator right? Perhaps check some of the free previews here of the developing from seed course on our site, they can be watched without logging in or anything: www.bonsaiempire.com/courses/developing-from-seed
Jonas, thank you for the video. Your blog has been a great source of information and inspiration. I would love to see something on the needle work you do on the tress, decandling and pinching of buds, etc. You have a great, honest way of explaining all this. Thank you so much.
Thanks, Miguel! I plan to write about needle work on my website in the next month and I have lots of articles about decandling. Will see about making videos on these topics too!
Hi, your explanation is great and simple. I used 50 seeds and 36 germinated after 9 days! The only comment I would add is that the soil matters, basically almost all the seeds I put in pure akadama germinated, while only 3 out out 12 germinated from organic soil. Great job guys, Bjorn/Oscar, if you can add video like this also for other species it would be great. Thanks Enrico
Jonas very informative thank you, I am going to start doing bonsai with my daughter this spring. I am in cold Ohio so I need to wait for warmer weather
It would be great if Jonas did a video on how to create good root arrangement on seedlings. That's an area of growing pines from seeds that I struggle with.
Thanks for this. I've literally just got a seedling sprout over the past couple weeks after taking it out the fridge. It's now on the window seal getting some light :)
Great video! Thanks for inspiration and encouragement! Although i have many deciduous trees - making good progress - I never had luck to find and or keep alive a dug up pine. Maybe i really should try to create a pine from seeds or a seedling.
Fan - tas - tic! Why are there not more videos of Jonas? :-D Great to see all stages of development and the endresults, which speak for themselves. Wouldn't mind having one of those on my bench :-D Great stuff!!!
Thank you for such a great video:) I have a Japanese maple in my backyard and in the spring I get a lot of babies growing back there is it a good idea to dig up some of the babies and start there. I love that tree with red leaves so beautiful so really like to get that for indoors. Thank again for the video:)
Best start to finish bonsai video I’ve found! I’ve just started some little saplings and struggling to find sapling specific advice or estimated time frames! Thank you for sharing :)
Such a fantastic video. Jonas's blog is gold, but he might be even better in front of the camera. Would love to see a full JBP course with Jonas on Bonsai Empire!
An excellent tutorial! I have never seen anything like it about the black pine formation process. I would just like to know what to do when multiple candles appear together in early spring, especially at the apex. And what is the best time to shape and wire. Thanks.
After reading a book “RHS The Little Book of Bonsai,” I had a ton of questions on early stages of bonsai process. This single video answered most of them! Thank you! Curious to learn a bit more on how exactly to go around germination, as I’m unsure if water pH or EC is too important for these trees?
I am in my young years and I plan on buying Camelia Sinensis seeds and make them into a bonsai as a long term investment so that I can have my own tea for free and it looks like this introduction tutorial is awesome
Hi 🙋♂️ Thank you! That was motivating! I noticed some of the trees are in meshpots. When is the right time to put them in meshpots and for how long do you let them in them?
Great video. There are very few instructional videos out there about growing bonsai from seed. I have a few 1 & 2 yr old cuttings and seedlings and not a clue what to do with them.
Thank you for this inspiring turorial. It seems I have understood the first time the concept of growing a Bonsai Tree over the years. I have only one Bonsai Tree since 6 or 7 years (chinese elm). But it doesnt seem to grow very much- but it is still alive. Can you tell me the reason why a pine is not recommended as an Indoor Bonsai tree ? I only have an shadow balcony, so I don´t think a pine would like to grow in the shadows.
Did you keep the 1st year seedling outside during winter? Or should they be brought inside like a garage? I just grew a couple of seedlings and not sure what to do. Thanks
Nice patience. Good information. I just started growing from seed 2 months ago. I have 3 Rocky Pine and one Blue Jacaranda out of about 40 seeds that successfully germinated. Is there a time frame from when to transplant? I got the kit with burlap sack and just wondering if there's a recommendation on what pot to use for longevity . Thanks for the video! 👍
Nice video Jonas, I have a couple hundred JBP & JRP and 100 Italian or Stone pines all from seed > Cuttings so great roots and just formed my first 2 year olds and looking forward to spring. I have been doing about 20+ a month under grow lights to see how it goes over the winter, good so far, once they are growing pretty good they transition to outside, will see long term if they make it.
Wow, that's a lot of pines! They do well when started any time of year as long as they get some protection in winter. Starting them in fall or winter and keeping them under lights can be a good way to get a jump the coming growing season.
