The US Coast Guard does not have physicians under Coast Guard rules. When they need a physician for particular operations, they get physicians from the Public Health Service.assigned on temporary duty. My husband retired from the Coast Guard after 30 years. When on assignment to Vietnam during that war, he requested a physician be assigned to his command. He got a guy who was absolutely quaking in his boots. He thought that by signing on with the Health Service would protect him from being drafted into that war. He was almost useless he was so frightened he was sobbing and when he heard any sort of munitions explosions, he almost fainted. So, maybe the US Navy should start using the PHS for their physician needs. More of these medical sorts might have more them could grow a pair, metaphorically speaking.
