As an impressionable kid, my favorite book was " My Side Of The Mountain" by Jean Craighead George. A story about a boy who runs away to the woods and lives with his pet falcon and weasel. I did likewise (without the pets) for 13 months, at 14 years old, and went to school every day! My parents hated it but it was useless to force me back! From a wild child to a mellow midget in maturity, it has shaped everything I am. Peace.

Edit: This album came out just a few months after Dark Side of the Moon, so I imagine the intro for this song was inspired by the intro for Money with the sound effects forming the beat.

If anyone knows where the Master Tapes to this album Derek Shulman would appreciate knowing, he would love to commission Steven Wilson to remaster this album, I believe they were with WWA in the US and Vertigo GB, they seem to have gone missing unfortunately, otherwise GG would release it in 5.1 currently!!! 🤔❤

    • @shyshift
      @shyshift 2 года назад +1

You can believe whatever you want malekmo61 but this lp was never released in the USA. They were still signed with Columbia for Octopus but they didn’t like In A Glass House citing no hit single so WWA in England decided to release it. The next album was The Power and The Glory for Capitol Records in 1974. That’s where I started.

@@shyshift unfortunately yes it was an import not a local release meaning that it was a rarity in the USA, unless you could shop at an import shop in the USA, there was no chance you would know about the release!!! I imported it in the late 70s and my pressing was WWA, here in Australia, it also came out on CD impersonating the album cover. This version had the CD Jewel case with the print that was on the clear plastic vinyl version and the booklet with the interior album sleeve print of the band, quite clever for it's day!!! Apparently a remastered version but not from the Master Tapes!!

Fully agree on both observations !
The live version on the Playing the Fool album which leads to "Experience" is superior to this studio version (though this one is very good).
And yes, the glass shattering intro loop is a precursor of this kind of electro cold wave or electro-industrial music !

  • @progqueen6219
    @progqueen6219 2 года назад +2

This makes me so happy! 😀 This is a great album (and song) and quite different from The Power And The Glory. There's a huge amount of tuned percussion on this album (a Kerry Minnear special), some church organ (a personal favourite) and some real solid grooves (Ray Shulman is the boss). You have something wonderful to look forward to, just make sure you're well rested before you hit that record button...
Anyone interested in buying/listening to this album should try and seek out Alucards own version, since this is the far superior version from a sound quality perspective.
On running away; I ran away everytime I got grounded for misbehaving and was confined to the inside of our house. This was when I was 6-9 years old. I used to steal my shoes from the hall, lock myself in my room, open the window and jump out. I usually stayed away for an hour or two before sneaking back trough the window again. As far as I know they never found out I was doing this, I just couldn't stand being locked inside. I was a stubborn and strong willed child, probably still am to be honest. 😝

I never ran away but, when I was 19, my buddy and I were driving around at 1:00 am on a Monday morning (after a get together celebrating my recent return from a 3 month trip to Europe and North Africa). When we couldn't find anywhere open for coffee (it was the 70s) we decided to fill his gas tank and drive to Vancouver. Five hours into the drive I phoned home to tell my mom where I was going so she wouldn't worry (she still did) and my buddy phoned in to quit his job since he was scheduled to work that evening. Ah the 70s.
    This band is alright.

Gentle Giant (GG), TRULY ORIGINAL, SPECIAL, AND UNIQUE - -
Blending mix influences of Jazz-Rock-Classical-Baroque-Medieval-Contemporary-Funky messed up beats and rhythms with lots of Counterpoints, Syncopations, Canons, Unusual Time Signatures ... I guessed these are some of the reasons why they called themselves GG.
Now in this new Millennium many people are discovering, awakening, and being amazed by the gentle brilliance and giant genius of GG! -
My favorite band of all time... Seen them live in Montreal... 4 times... Even more Brilliant live!
They used their skills, talents, knowledge, and training to follow their passion for exploring musical avenues and possibilities where the human mind had never been before or since, for their own pleasure and satisfaction ...
...AT THE RISK OF REMAINING UNPOPULAR AND NOT VERY WELL KNOWN ...
They were very aware and accepting of this ... but followed their passion and excitement anyway... Each had to be a giant inside to go that path. Denis Rouma T.

In 1970 I was 17. I walked into an incense drenched psychedelic record store called Phantasmagoria to buy the 1st ELP album. A sales person saw my purchase and convinced me to listen to the 1st GG album. The cover impressed me. After hearing a minute or two I formed an instant visceral dislike for this band. I wasn't ready. It was too discordant, too experimental for my ears. I never really gave them a chance until 2014 when I heard Gary Green's band Three Friends in a live performance on Cruise to the Edge. My ears had matured, thankfully. Their music is not for the casual listener. It demands attention. Now I love everything they did.

Gentle Giant is not my favorite but, I do find them interesting. Like Supertramp, I prefer one singer over the other… there may be more singers, don’t flog me. I’m glad to have heard it.
I probably threatened to run away many times but I don’t think I ever did. Once, I did go clubbing and my friends wanted to take off somewhere, thought maybe to eat, no, they went to the beach. I did protest when I found out which turned my stomach and I was throwing up all the way there. Basically, they kidnapped me overnight and my car was left the parking lot all by its lonesome.
My folks, in the morning, past by and saw my car sitting there and called the cops, thinking I was hurt or killed or something. Phones were harder to come by back then… but I was also less communicable back then too. Of course I got an earful when I returned.
    Good times.
Bonnie Raitt’s version of Runaway is pert good.

Back in the seventies my "heaven" was a place called "Moby Disc". It was primarily a used record shop. My fingers could flip through albums for hours looking for cheap scores for a kid with a $10 a week allowance. Couldn't afford many new albums, or rather I would rather get three used albums than spend the bucks on a new one.
And "In A Glass House" did not have a U.S. release, so one had to buy the "import", which was even more expensive.
So, when this turned up in the used albums you just bought it regardless of the shape the album was in.
Mine had some serious pops in it, but strangely in ways they played into the Gentle Giant sound and simply didn't bother me.
In any case, this GG album is a special favorite of mine.
And when you get to revisiting YES? Do "In The Presence Of" from their 2001 album "Magnification". The BEST of late yes. No big name keyboard player on this one...instead they have orchestra.
    Blessings.

Now, for some quality breaking glass check out National Health, and their track 'The Collapso'. There's a great live version off whistle test. However the beeb make them substitute a box of cutlery being dashed onto a metal tray for the breaking glass... Likely for Heath and Safety reasons :) good ol' beeb.

If enjoyed this I bet you really will enjoy Experience. I'd recommend the live version from Playing the Fool or the King Biscuit Flour Hour where they medley the two perfectly.

This is the only Gentle Giant album that I have. And I Iove it.
But I cannot get into any of their other albums.

This is one of my favorite albums from GG. A bit eclectic at times, but it has too many good moments.

Yeah my man you should do a chronological on this album there is a reason for it I won't give it away but you'll appreciate it more if you just do them in order whenever I'm not saying you know do you like you did with Genesis Lamb Lies Down I'm just saying just do them chronologically and you do you'll see why here's an interesting little fact that album was never released in America you had to get it on import luckily back in the day record stores had an import section so you could get records that were released in the US because they had a section that had all the Imports which was pretty cool also WWA records that was the same English label that Black Sabbath was on they were on Warner Brothers in America but they were on WWA in England and so is gentle giant and then before that I think they were on vertigo I've had a really cool label on the record it's amazing kind of a psychedelic coolest thing with all these Stripes going around and difference concentric eccentric circles he have to check it out it looked really cool revolving on the turntable all right my man I'll be checking the next drop

I could never get to grips with this band. Incredible musicians, but often that came before songwriting IMO. Octopus was a consistently good album, and there's some good tracks on The Power & the Glory.

Do you plan to go through the whole album? Because ... My favorite song on the album is the title track "In A Glass House".

Stubborn, foolish record execs! GG's US label wouldn't release this album stateside (not commercial enough for them?), literally forcing fans to pay extra for imports of the LP.
