Not going to read the book before this series ends. I am loving this so much that I watch every episode at least 3 times before moving on to the next, just like I did with GOTs.
Why on earth would anyone want someone to spoil it for them or the rest of us.... I find this to be lazy, and impatient.

I try to not discuss spoilers from the books as of course ruins the surprises, can’t get enough of the series either 😭

The current series is sometimes wildly different than the book. This includes key characters, major story elements, and pacing. Toranaga feints Crimson Sky, delays many times to throw off opponents, and Mariko, Blackthorn, and Yabu go to Osaka. The final battle is described in the book but not visualized. One significant annoyance for me is the series portrayal of Yabu, who takes different sides frequently and appears comical. On the book he is squat, evil, conniving but careful, and only chooses Ishido at the end. Toranaga has him commit sepuku as a traitor, eventually.

If I has to go it alone, I would hit the samurai positions hard with cannon fire first and then withdraw.
Second, I would force Ishido's people to come to me, which is very likely after the cannon fire.
Third, I would already have my cannons positioned to hit, hopefully, a geographical location such as a valley. Once the balk, if not all, the opposing force was in that location, commence firing from all four directions.
Fourth, send in the infantry to finish off who wasn't killed by cannon fire.

Historically , both sides have cannons. Like all artillery tactic, your primarily target isn't troops BUT other artillery. Placing your gun in the front run the risk of getting hit by other guns. That why all the big guns were placed way at the back.
Only small ,cheap mobile piece were used to hit infantry because they can be deployed ,hit enemies and run off before their main gun react to your location.

I'm still leery of Bontaro. Unless he got assistance when he was corned like that, he should have died regardless how skillful he is. But here he is?🤔

They explained that he had armor while the orders didn’t, I read something online explaining that 👀

I have never seen a full episode, just the summaries. Apparently, I missed one.
With that said, with my understanding of Zen, samurai devotion, being a former martial artist myself, and former infantryman, that wouldn't have deterred me from trying to kill him.
