  • Are you ready?
    Let's jump into my VR home cockpit and see how is flying the F18 Hornet in virtual reality.
    I'll show you through a serie of videos covering the different aspects of combat flying, how does it feel and how close can we get to the real thing.
    On Virtual Reality everything counts. There are a bunch of things which are not necessary to use but they add a lot of immersion. All them together bring the experience to a top level and teleport you to a parallel world up there in the skies.
    Hope you like it and get the sensation of how I feel when I fly the jet in VR.
    (Cam did not capture the seat vibration, hope I'll record it better next time)

    My wife walked in on me one day when I was in a dogfight in VR. I lifted my headset and thought she was having a heart attack because she was red faced and couldn't breathe. She was laughing at me so hard she couldn't even talk... And I wasn't even wearing a seatbelt or a flight suit. Better lock your doors!!

      I’ve always accepted the fact that I look ridiculous sitting in my basement on my “throne” (as my wife calls it) looking around and talking to people that can’t be seen or heard by her.
      Regardless, it’s an incredibly fun hobby to have! Despite the flaws of DCS, it’s still so fun to fly. I think I’m more tolerant of flaws because I started flying flight sims in the 80’s on a Commodore 64

      Well… augmented is seeing the real world through clear glasses, with augmented data, like what is used in the F35. You can see through things while flying. I’m having a headset made for when I’m flying a helicopter, to give Nav data laid over real world.

    In the military, flying with NVG, we would set them up slightly high in ones vision so we could glance beneath them clearly at the panels. It was very intuitive. Just keep your head up\forward and glance down eyes only. I think the VR headset could be modified to operate like this. Perhaps the bottom seal around the nose\cheeks removed as much as possible. And the headset mounted to a proper helmet mount to spread the load onto the head. And finally control the room lighting around the simpit, and the panel lighting to make the panel standout to the desired degree. I reckon this could work very well. Simple and doesn't require complicated software and a special headset to pass through a camera vision of the simpit.

    • @jynxxnerd

      The only flaw I can think of would be the MDF screens. Nice thing about VR is you dont need all those extra screens.

    • @julianmorrisco
      @julianmorrisco Год назад +2

      That’s a great idea. As someone who works/worked in VR, you’re gonna get purists freaking out as the idea is for the goggle-screens to take up as much of the view as possible but considering that for VR flying the cockpit remains in the same place and, for us without a separate setup per plane the cockpit remains the same, it’s a good way to get poor-person’s AR. You might need a separate setup for non flying VR apps but who needs a non-flying VR setup anyway? :D

    • @halnineooo136

      It's not that hard to cut of a region of space where the camera footage supercedes the VR content.

    • @j6077xxd
      @j6077xxd Год назад +1

      Yeah I was thinking that too. Combining the modified headset with one of those new full panels from winwing would be really immersive. We would spend a lot of time in the sim; and a little trade off in realism was easily overpowered by the stress of completing the task (and an instructor steering daggers into the back of your head during a cat check sortie lol). I think the MFDs would be super usable, as well as the UFC, glancing under the VR goggle. The great thing about VR is that the HMD works as designed; multi screen and\or trackir combined with a panel with MFD is just not realistic and immersive in my humble experience. But each to their own. What a cool hobby!

      Two tips: "Muscle memory" and "silicon tears". The first one, after so many hours in the sim your hands go automatically where you want to (specially if yo place the MFDs anf other stuff on the exact point you feel it should be in VR). The silicon tears are silicon 3D stickers of different shape that you put on some buttons you want to distingish from others nearby (for example, you can place a big square silicon sticker in the midle OSB button of one row, and an spheric small one on the first and last buttons. That way you can easily know which button of the MFD are you going to press)

    Very nice setup! Similar to mine. I love the WW panels, Hornet and Viper throttles. I also fly mostly the Viper and Hornet in VR (Varjo Aero) using Vaicom Pro. Your ICP looks tempting, as well as the WW UFC and DDIs, but since I use PointCtrl FCUs, I'll probably hold off on anymore physical controls for now. The FCUs work really well in VR, virtually eliminating the need to touch the mouse. They just lack the tactile feedback of bushing real buttons in the cockpit, (they do have physical buttons on the units though). They're a real game-changer in VR! I'm also running a seat mover (with Buttkicker) and Jetseat SE pad, which really adds to the immersion as well. I tried VR Necksafer with mixed results (need more testing and fine tuning on my part), but those towel racks look like the answer! Did you make them or are they available to purchase? I'm trying to get as close as I can to living my childhood dream of becoming a fighter pilot. 😂

      I fly in my more simpler home cockpit with Q2, controllers hanging over my neck with bungee cord. Think its easier to touch buttons with vr hands than blindly search for real ones in home cockpit.Also peaking below glasses is unconfortable and immersion breaking. I made my setup with wooden base on wheels to move it around and i use only playseats seat, MFG Crosswind pedals, warthog Hotas with 10cm extention, one f16 MFD for kneeboard and random needs, PS 4 controller for helicopter CPG, saitek 3 lever throttle for AH-64 power levers and keyboard. Enough blind grab for me😂Heh i use pilot gloves just for combort too.

      @@nathanielcosta81 Thanks for the reply. I'll look into possibly making some. You did a great job. They look like a commercially made product! Watching your video again and seeing you climb into the seat, I just realized another layer of immersion of my pit. It's setup next to a wall in my mancave. So with the WW panels and throttles on my left, it's a bit of a challenge climbing in and out from only one side. Somewhat of a pain in the ass...it's sorta like climbing into the real thing I guess 🤣

    • @nathanielcosta81
      @nathanielcosta81  Год назад +1

      No plans for a motion platform, I find no sense in using it on a combat jet sim, as you can fly inverted and on some angles your platform could not follow. I use jetseat with simshaker to replicate the vibrations of the seat, and that's pretty cool.
      The only important devices important to be in position in VR are the MFDs on the Hornet and the ICP on the Viper. As that's a selfmade cockpit, I placed those devices on the exact spot I felt they should be in VR.

    Decent setup (mainly the raven one series), but it's time to update to winning MIP :D it hurts to see an F16 UFC instead.
    I respect that you want immersion, but the gloves, seatbelts, and handles, did you really need that much of immersion? lol

    • @nathanielcosta81
      @nathanielcosta81  Год назад +1

      Thanks for your comment.
      Talking about the UFC, I fly the Viper so much as the Hornet and many other jets, so that's not a problem. I use WW panels and a warthog throttle that of course are not present on a Hornet cockpit as well, so I don't mind if it's not a replica from the original, I just search a comfortable and useful set up.
      Acording to the inmersion: yes, I don't regret having spent some money on that. Gloves extend the HOTAS lifetime, the material from my previous one died from hand sweat. Seatbelt really makes you feel you're attached to the jet seat, specially when spinning to chech your six or whaterver. Handles is just a matter of comfort when doing that, having a hold makes things easier for your neck and back when turning, so it is on a real jet as well.

    I was an aircraft mechanic and had a customer with a small acrobatic plane. He as a retired Air Force Lt Col, who flew F86, F-100, F-105 and F-111. Vietnam 100 missions, one of which he failed to bring the F-105 back. He doesn't know if it was flak or a SAM. Anyway, he drove school bus after he retired and would doze off in my office chair between morning and after noon driving shifts. I saw him there asleep in the cushy chair, so I told my co-worker, "Hey, watch this." I creeped up beside the jet jock and shouted "Eject, Eject, Eject !!!" Boy you should have seen him jump. It's a wonder he didn't grab for the ring. He laughed and had a few choice words for me. God, the stories that man could tell. I kept telling him to write a book, but he never did.

      @cammy9r Год назад +1

      It's a hobby, some people just want to sit in a pub or others in museum .At this level and beyond the hobby is the construction and integration, the perk being virtual flight. I have interests in electronics, wood and metal working, I also like flight sims. Natural progression is to combine the hobbies and make a 'cockpit'. I made a very generic layout for twin engine but it works well in 2D and is great with VR. I will of course with time improve on it as they are never really finished.
