Thank you for this. I'm putting together tools for patients with ADHD and this is really helpful to add to the toolbox. Scheduling lights to brighten in morning and dim at night has actually been super helpful for their sleep issues, which has improved almost everything else.
Thanks for the explanation. Absurd that a routine wouldn’t include turning on at a specified time and off after a specified interval, but now I understand.
Are you using the Alexa 3 Gen? I do not see the menus you are showing. From the home screen I have to go to "More" then "Routines". After that, everything is different. I still can not get any lights to work.
Nice video. Basic but clear and concise. FYI, IFTTT does not need to access Alexa routines, it can trigger events with your lights directly via the skills.
This would be way more helpful if you went more slowly, especially when showing what option in the Alexa app to select. I need to know how to get there, not just what I can do after arriving!
Is there a way I can create a routine on and off at schedule without create one for ON and another routine for Off? Just one schedule what time it starts and what time ends?
Is it possible to set timers to my devices? For example i wanna add a routine that my aquarium turns off for only 15 mins and then after 15 mins turns back on. Or everytime i put my phone charger to on, it should turn it off after 1 or 2 hours automatically???
any idea how to get alexa to let me select white for my merkury bulbs when trying to select colors when trying to create routines? it lets me select other colors, but never white and if you just have it turn on in the routine it will just turn on with the previous color used. I want to create a routine and have it go directly to the white color. suggestions?
Hi, thanks for your tutorial. Very interesting... I have a question: I created a group with two lights by c by GE. I set the trigger Sunset, selected gradual from dark to light and set duration 15 minutes. When even starts, only one light comes on... I do not know why. If I do without gradual feature, then both light come on. Very strange. And another thing, I suppose it may be related, it says under one light DEVICE UNRESPONSIVE. hOWEVER, WHEN i SAY Alexa All lights ON, it works fine. Do not know what the deal is. What am I missing? Thanks.
Nice video! Very informative. I want to have an echo flex in every bedroom, so when I say "alexa switch on/off the bedroom light" it only responds to the light switch (soonoff) linked to that echo flex. Is this possible in grouping?
Assuming of the the Echo , Flexes, Dots etc use the same Amazon account they will all respond to the same commands in each room. I have an Echo 5, and 2 Dots and can turn on / off units in any room from any echo device
Marge, The TP Link Mini plugs should work for you, they are wider, but allow you to plug one into each of the sockets in a standard duplex wall plate. Here's a link to check them out on Amazon amzn.to/2ROn3AF Thanks, Jason
Marge Fox, have you considered a smart extension lead with individually controlled sockets? These are available from Amazon UK, not sure about other countries.
You helped me sooo much man your so under rated and I love you content I was trying to find how to schedule my lights and know one came up so I thought it was impossible then you came Love you man and I subscribed and liked this vid just so I can help you out a little it is the least I can do for you man Keep up the good work
Intermatic Wi-Fi timer let's you set the timer for your outside lights. And it adjusts the time automatically when night are shorter vs. And yes they can be controlled by Alexa, Google, and I believe that Siri also can do it. But they don't have dimming features. But you can find these timers at Home Depot. And will be found in the light switch aisle (this is aisle 6 in most Home Depot's). And the cost around $75 + tax. I just bought mine and they work great.
Pretty good over view. Amazon was obviously liStening bc I set up my lights yesterday (10/23/19) and there was a sunrise/sunset option. 😉. Advise to All you people saying he’s goes too fast ...hit the pause button or slow down the playback speed. 🤦♂️nice video thanks man!
phyllis tarallo I fully agree with you. I am trying to see where he is or what he was clicking but NOOOOOOO idea. People have to realize that we watch these videos because we do NOT know how to do it, thus seeking videos to explain to us. It is so hard to find people that will explain and show so we can follow and understand. So off to find someone else to explain.
Had the same issue... he talks to fast! The solution is to click on the settings gear at the bottom of the video and simply change the playback speed to .75 or slower.
Good video thanks! Subscribed! Here's a Q: Can you tell Alexa to enable/disable a routine that contains a schedule? If I have a routine that schedules lights on and off at certain times I want to tell Alexa to turn this on when I leave home...I don't want it on all the time. Or must I use the app to enable/disable these? Thanks for any help!
Fil, The Alexa app doesn't have an option to disable a routine. The best suggestion I can give you if you have a long routine that you don't want to have to recreate is to change the trigger. If you change the trigger to a voice command (something you don't ever plan to use) you can always change it back to a scheduled trigger later. This still isn't a great solution, but unless Amazon updates the Alexa app or you switch to a smart home hub for your automation, this is the best option I can suggest. Thanks, Jason
I don't have a Group set for my lights in the living room, I have it scheduled to turn on but still can't figure out how to schedule a routine for Off.
Marge, you need to create a second routine, set when this happens to the time you want the lights to turn off. When you select the lights for the action press the switch icon to change it from on to off. Thanks, Jason
Your information was good and helped me set up a routine, but you move really fast without saying where you are clicking. I had to pause your video several times to see what you clicked to get to the next step in the procedure.
Ok here is an idea . ... I want Alexa to limit the time a light can be on ... For example I tell her to turn on the garage light and I forgot to shut it off . Can she automatically turn it off after an hour ? Maybe give me warning ..... You left the garage lights on im shutting them off in1 minute.
Your initial example of putting a routine into a group doesn’t help if people are just wanting to set up a routine with just one device. After I set up the time, “Alexa Will” and from there there is a drop-down menu with 17 different options, each with it’s own list. I just want my plug to turn on and off.
Great video but move too fast on clicking things on the phone and moving on to next topic before we can digest what we just heard.... keep posting but slow down a little....p.s. you are not the only person that does this...
For everyone saying we should pause or rewind because he goes too fast.... Really? We have searched RUclips because we don't know how to do something. A tutorial should take it one step at a time. I stopped listening once you were 3 steps ahead of me.
He rushes through instructions without clarity or time allotted to comfortably following along in real time. He is a poor teacher as he just rambles through the motions without really explaining clearly at a learning pace. As a teacher of 35 years I know what I’m talking about. Though the directions may be accurate, you can find a better paced tutorial.
Maybe you should talk faster...I can still understand what you're saying, but can't keep up...THAT would be less helpful, although I didn't think that was possible...oops, forgot to click Subscribe

Thanks, and I'll try to slow down a little bit.
I wonder: has he even read the constructive comments??
@@septimuspretorius250 I wonder have you discovered the playback speed options yet ?
There are three dots in the upper right hand corner. Click them, from the drop down menu select a slower playback speed 75% seems perfect
It actually works without making it sound too weird 😂🤣😂🤣
Thank you! I’m old need slow 😂

I thought the same thing. He is way to fast.

Very helpful. Thanks! I expected Alexa to be a bit more intuitive with scheduling lights.
Trey, glad I could help. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks
Jason
We should be able to talk to Alexa and tell her we want a schedule. Then we should be able to edit the commands in the app.

Is there a way to program Alexa to turn a light bulb off after 10 minutes of turning on?

Does Alexa run a routine to turn on / off lights if you are not there with your phone / app? I can't find this answer anywhere.
How do I set up my Alexa App?
Will this turn the tv off at a set time daily
How do get the app

Thank you. Very informative. I agree with the other comments about speaking too fast. I had to go back and watch over again a few times.

How many routines it can do in a day?
I also would like a recommendation for a smart plug that can fit in an outlet (2 smart plugs in 1 outlet)

Keith Williamson can you recommend one?
Kirsten M . Sorry Kirsten, I cannot give a recommendation because I have not used one. But, there a number available on Amazon.
Keith Williamson ok, I’ll look. Thanks!
How do you do this😅
I do not have a menu button anywhere

how do you shut off and on the same light no group?
When you are creating a routine on the "add action" step select "smart home" and then "lights" and find the one you want.
Love this video! Useful!

On at dusk; off at my hour setting: I think that would be great too.
Thanks!
Thank you O-H
I think your content is great but you go too fast - slowing down would really be helpful
Yes, Please!!!!

Don't think the warning is an option, bit, you can use a command like "garage lights on for 30 minutes"
How!!!!!!!!!
Too fast... slow down
Disagree, great pacing. Slow it down if you need more time by adjusting speed
He looks like a robot no moving at all
I'll work on that. Thanks😀

You just need to find the plug on the list instead of selecting a group like I did in the video.
Need a simple and intuitive way to schedule light groups or individual lights to turn on/off on a schedule. The current procedure is too convoluted.
Great video but move too fast on clicking things on the phone and moving on to next topic before we can digest what we just heard.... keep posting but slow down a little....p.s. you are not the only person that does this...
You might want to add that when setting up lights, you have to use special bulbs
Special bulbs if using the main light, this is a demonstration how to set timer for a lamp connected to a smart plug
Too fast, can’t find menu
I will be happier if it's slow down speaking and blinked a few more times
You are talking too fast, going through the steps too fast, and not being thorough about what you do.
Dude, thx for the effort but you went way too fast
Way too fast. You already know how to do it we're trying to learn.
You're so cute xx
Dude lay off the caffeine before your vids😂 seriously slow down just a tad👍🏾
It is NOT step by step! MOST of the steps he does, he never calls out. So you will be left behind with no clue how he got to the next step.
For everyone saying we should pause or rewind because he goes too fast.... Really? We have searched RUclips because we don't know how to do something. A tutorial should take it one step at a time. I stopped listening once you were 3 steps ahead of me.
sorry for going so fast. I'll try to slow down in the future. For now you can use the playback controls to slow down the playback on RUclips.
Disappointing video. Much too fast for me to follow at my age ! Please make the same video speaking much more slowly and pausing between each step.
