Diana plays the role of the spirit of lake Baikal.
It assumes the form of the dead boy's mother in order to save him from freezing to death after he got lost and fell asleep on the lake's ice.
The spirit of Baikal is a good benevolent spirit.
On another note here is a little education about Greek mythological creatures: Mermaids are half human half fish, Sirens are half birds half human, Nymphs are forest spirits, the word you are looking is Nereid which are water spirits.
