Absolutely excellent in all ways! I've lived a few short miles all my 70+ years from the field this was found. My sister-in-law's family owned adjoining land and this story is legend! For many years we ran a Romano-British re-enactment/living history group in the area. Also did work for local archaeology units, museums and historic sites of this period. There is SO much Romano-British history on the Fen Edge that I could just go on and on. Happy days ! Thanks Nick- Teresa, Cambs/Suffolk border.

That is amazing Teresa. It is quite a story that certainly put Mildenhall on the world map. I live on the other side of the country but maybe next year we will make a trip over and visit the area where it all happened. Thanks Nick.

The reader did a superb job. His voice fit this so very well, and the voices he did were great for the characters he was portraying.
And leave it to Dahl to make the story so tellable, and so engaging.

The Saturday Evening Post was the most high-paying magazine market in the US, back when Dahl wrote this and for many decades afterward. So half of that kind of money was a pretty good deal, and the exchange rate of UK to US money back then would have made it really good. No wonder Dahl could live on two short stories a year, if he was already selling to the Saturday Evening Post.

Ford wouldn't speak to Dahl, and so was someone he didn't know in any way. With only the village idiot, Butcher, to rely on, the story was written from a biased viewpoint and owes much to fiction.

I'm a little surprised that there is no comment about the Roman hoard found near the other Mildenhall (in Wiltshire, UK), the Cunetio Hoard. It was discovered in 1978 ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cunetio_Hoard ) and the Roman town was excavated by Time Team in 2009 ( ruclips.net/video/1hdPPgae84o/видео.html ).

@@Trickynickymarts - The music was nice and tastefully done, but it's more common in RUclips videos than in audiobooks. A lot of people are anxious for the story to start and continue; but musical segments also have a tendency to wake people up if they are using books to get to sleep. (And yes, a book has to be interesting to get people to fall asleep, although not quite as interesting as a thriller.) It's funny how audiobook fashions have progressed.
