Austin, many thanks! I am a 60-year-old woman who hasn't been on a rowing machine in two decades. Today was my second session with you in this video (alternating days on and days off). Even at a low tension of 2 out of 8, this is a PERFECT and effective workout for me, starting back as a beginner (full disclosure, I do occasionally kayak, but go months in between trips). I put a small folding table at the end of my basic Sunny RW-5515 machine and follow along with your every move, giggling at moments of cuteness from you, sweating and concentrating on my form keenly as I go. Just about the time I'm forgetting to brace my abs, you remind me, right when I'm starting to rush through to the pause, you caution me to be controlled...it's like having my own personal trainer in my living room. I could probably use this one and only video for months of slow increase in tension and never become bored or outgrow it. I'm proof positive that it's never too late to learn how to row properly and get in shape! I feel fantastic after these sessions, so thank you again!!
Just echoing many other comments, where this channel stands out is the repeated emphasis on basic form. You know humans… we learn, we practice, we master…but we forget and go-back to old ways quickly. Thank you for understanding and accommodating for your audiences forgetfulness.
I have osteoarthritis in both knees, grossly overweight, in fact officially obese, retired just over a year ago, bought a spinning bike in September for cardio exercise, 2 months ago discovered rowing, just over a week ago discovered your videos. Love this beginners video, cut down on my spinning to do more rowing, just building stamina to go onto longer rows now. Oh, i'm no longer obese, i have lost 2 stones since September. Can't wait to move on to the longer workouts
Keep up the good work brother!! Remember your only competition is the you from yesterday! Keep pushing your self to be the better version of yourself! Be proud of your accomplishments!!
@@Loostyc was tough, struggled to do 15mins. Now I can row for an hour and get some really high intensity minutes in that hour. I now often do an hour on the spinning bike, followed by an hour on the rower and finish with dumbbells, cableweights or resistance bands or combination of them
I know this video is a little older (newer content available) but as a beginner rower on a weight loss journey, and in general wanting to feel healthier - this video is perfect for me. I've been rowing 80 minutes daily with a rest day so far and already seeing progress. Doing it along with Austin helps remind me to engage my core, legs, not just push my butt out and make my arms do all the work while keeping a decent pace. Look forward to catching up with you in your more advanced videos soon!
I did the rowing machine for the first time in my life yesterday at the age of 48. This is definitely going to be added to my list of exercises. I have never sweat so much from a workout! I feel the pain (in a good way) everywhere! I needed help with the technique, I had no idea what I was doing, and found your video. It was super easy and informative!
This video stands out from many others because of the angle at which it's shot at. You make it so much easier to compare body alignment and positioning. Thank you, I hope you continue to make more.
Thank you for this video. I’m using this nearly everyday as a row-along to encourage me to do it. I like that you’ve kept it achievable for beginners. I’m had a stroke back in Sept 2017 and am thankful I can move around the house using a walking stick now. The water rower is very useful as that helps me burn off some fats with my limited mobility. I used to run but of course can no longer do that. I’m 52 this year. My main worry now is the water leakage of the tank which happened before. And my hubby wants to put the machine up every weekend as he finds it an eye sore! Those machines that are heavily used like those in the gyms I believe are always down. Sigh. I can only hope for the best. In the meanwhile will continue to use your video as a row-along!
Just started rowing. In fact, just finished my first row with your video! Fitness has been a struggle for me, and I have hated nearly all forms of exercise machine. Your workout and focus on technique helped me be successful. And dammit if it I didn't tear up a little when you said you were proud of us at the end. Thank you for your help!
Purchased a 2nd hand rowing machine last week and after subscribing to your channel, watching techniques etc. I’ve just completed my first 20minute beginner rowing session and it was great. Really easy to follow and the breaks really concentrate the mid and body to get the strokes right. Thank you Austin 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Just finished this video on my C2 and I'm just so grateful that someone with so much knowledge will take the time to show how it's done to complete out of shape beginners like me. That was my first real work out in years and I can't wait to try it again tomorrow!
I realize this video is a year old and you may never see this, but I'm just beyond happy right now and had to thank you! I'm out of shape right now but have been going consistently to the gym trying to work my way back. At 54, this is the first time in my life that I am enjoying working out. However, I have had surgery on my lower back, have one very weak ankle (thanks to the damaged sciatic nerve)and the knee on the other leg is a problem. Treadmills and ellipticals are no longer an easy cardio option for me. I got on the rower for the first time in my life about a week ago...I was doing everything incorrectly. LOL But I was super curious. I found your videos and decided I was going to try this. I got on a couple of times and tried to get the form right. This morning I did this workout. ALL of it. And kept up. You have helped me find something that I am super excited about. THANK YOU! Thank you for being super clear and making this seem possible for the complete novice. I am so excited, I can't stop smiling! Looking forward to the day I can complete more advanced workouts. 😊
Just found this "old" video, and as a 52 yr old beginner, I found it to be very doable, but still felt like a workout! It didn't make me feel like I was out of my depths. Thank you!
I JUST STARTED ROWING AT HOME 2/1/21, TYVM FOR BEING A GREAT INSTRUCTOR AND MOTIVATOR. HOPEFULLY ONE DAY I WILL WITNESS YOUR ENTIRE RUclips CATALOG. MORE 20-30 MINS BEGINNER INSTRUCTIONAL AND WORKOUT VIDEOS WOULD BE APPRECIATED. TAKE CARE
Your videos are extremely helpful especially for newbies like me who typically have ignored cardio I'm lucky that I found your instructions before I started learning bad form!! It might be nice if you have video portions that show the rower's POV Thanks again.... I'll be back!!
Amazing, just amazing. The first time I used a machine (you helped pick) in 20 years. The instructions were spot on, the pace was perfect, and you read my mind throughout. THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks for this! Just got my new rowing machine yesterday, and your videos are great! This workout feels like an excellent way to learn proper form as well as get a workout. :-)
Weeks ago, my wife and I ordered a C2 Model D. It arrived yesterday evening, and today I did my first row to this video: so informative and fun! Loved it, thanks!
Hi Austin, we are waiting on the delivery of our A1 Water Rower. Just to say thanks for all the guidance and training videos. They will be a great help inspiration. You see guys on the Concept 2 at the gym using poor technique every visit, yet there is a sticker on each machine with the correct form. Really appreciate your help. Cheers from the UK!
Man you look a lot like an Old School Runescape Streamer, 7asty. My rowing machine just got here today and I'm excited to follow along with your videos start tomorrow. Loving the vids so far
I cannot say thank you enough! You have inspired me to keep going and not give up; rowing is giving me a reason to carve out time just for me. Thank you Austin💗
This is super helpful to be able to see the technique so I can make sure my workouts are correct and efficient, while also making sure I’m not messing up my back. Thanks!
Thank you for this video! I started rowing about 6 weeks ago, and now I realized I was making some moves wrong and now I'm working to fix it. Many greeting from Germany!
Awesome! Ive used a rower before when i was playin rugby. It was great cardio in the gym. We used it for HIT workouts to burn out and we were sloppy. Just to get to workin the body. Im picking up my rower this week and have been watching your videos for a couple weeks now and seeing this right now is awesome for me. Thank you!!!! Love your energy level and talking thru out to explain.
We just got gifted a pretty good (I think) rowing machine. Spent a couple of days watching your videos for technique and tips. Going to start with this workout tomorrow morning. Thank you! 😊
You rule, Austin! Thanks so much for this video. Has worked great for me starting out. Watched about 10 times now and think my technique is okay now and body is prepared for more.
I just started rowing in an machinerhat was given to me. I couldn't complete the 20 minutes but will build stamina. Thank you for the excellent guidance. On another note - where can I get one of the foot paddle rest, it is missing in my machine. The brand is Stamina X.
Thank you! Can't run or go outside because of wildfires, so dusted off my poor almost forgotten rower. Thank you for making it fun, I might actually commit to doing this regularly. :)
Just found your channel. Thanks for the tips and breakdown. You will become my morning companion for the next couple weeks to make sure I’m correcting my stroke. No visor here though! 🤦🏻
Wonderful workout for beginner, me n my husband follow your video everyday now..slowly getting into technique, we are using water rower..unfortunately i Stil can’t get to 30..25 max 🤪 but thank you 🙏 😊
Hi Austin! Bought your book "Row your fat off!" today and already finished to read it :D I still have only four questions: 1. WHEN to eat? After training, or before? How far before of after? 2. What about vegetables from can's (olives, lentil, etc)? Are they also counted as processed? 3. At rest days, is exercises with dumbbells and squeezing s are ok? 4. What you think about pure oxygen or rich oxygen air mix during exercises?
I hope that you liked it!! Thanks for your support - For your questions, 1. I recommend eating in the morning, daytime, and stop eating after 6:00-7:00 PM 2. Canned foods are okay! Do NOT count them as processed as long as the food inside is a "whole food" (like lentils!) 3. Yes, dumbbell workouts are great for the days in between! 4. Don't bother with enhanced air mixes - stick to normal air!
Loved that pep talk before the last interval. "Don"t be victimized by your rower" LOL while out of breath But then.... I really did show my rower what I was made of!!
Hi Austin! I found you here on RUclips after purchasing my first rowing machine and I love your attitude and energy! I just completed this workout video and noticed that the inside of my knees hurt. Since I'm a noob I'm sure this is a form problem, do you have any ideas about how to solve this issue? Thanks!!
Great workout coaching. Loved it. Brand new. Q: in the pause where we are arms outstretched tilted forward just before legs bending (hamstring stretch moment) my rower seat is pushing uncomfortably into the back of my legs. Momentary discomfort due to drill? or should I do some adjustments in my seat position or get a seat pad to avoid getting sore? Have a Waterrower
My first time to try your workout. A bit intense for a beginner but in a good way and I really enjoyed it. Great content! Do you have a recommendation for a seat pad/ cushion? My bottom tends to hurt at minute 15 of rowing.
Hey Reg! Thanks my friend! I'd highly recommend my coaching course ROW-20 as the BEST way to develop good habits and progress early on in your journey!
Could you do maybe a video with the camera aimed over your shoulder a bit so we can almost see what you’re seeing while you row? Like your feet and your legs, are they perfectly parallel to the machine? Like I’ve heard you say to keep your legs together but does that mean your legs are actually touching, do you force them closed? From this angle it’s hard to see some of the finer form stuff. I know from your video about rowing overweight, you said it’s alright to open up your stance but how open is too open? You probably have a whole filming set up I’m asking you to adjust but I think a different view would be helpful. I hope you’ll consider it.
I will most likely make a video on this to help answer your question. But for the most part, the legs are not squeezed together, but the knees are going slightly wider than how wide the feet are!
I was wondering the same thing about knees! I've read that knees should be pushed together too. I gave it a go and it was impossible, not to mention I'd end up pigeon-toed within a week!😁
Training Tall Hey! I’m following up with another suggestion! I’m still looking forward to the over the shoulder pov video though! Anyway, I started using a rowing metronome app to help me keep a steady pace. As a beginner, I’ve been rowing for just 10 minutes but it was filled with random bursts of high-intensity rows and low-intensity dips. The metronome was an instant help though, seriously, without really any struggle, I instantly was able to go 15 mins and got up to 23 mins the other day before being totally exhausted (still recovering!). Until now, I’ve never heard of using a metronome for pacing. I thought metronomes were just for music & rhythm lol. But I’m just thinking that it might help your other viewers, like it helped me. I’m sure there’s a lot of apps out there, but I’ve been using “Metrownome.” Im just thinking that Metronomes in general might also be worth covering. If there’s other tech tools for rowing you already like, that could make another interesting video and would be interested in hearing about them. Hope you’ve been well.
I really enjoy your videos. I just signed up to your app. Trying to get logged in. Apps says it is sending me a link to get logged in. I am not receiving the email??? Thanks Austin
Hmm.. check your spam and make sure you didn’t have any spelling mistakes in your email sign up! Shoot me an email @ training4giants@gmail.com if you’re still having issues!
I’ve been trying your beginning program for a little bit now and have to say even though your program appears well instructed I can’t get higher than 21 SPM. So either I really suck for a newbie or the Topiom rower at work is incorrect in its readout. Perhaps it’s not helping that I can set the foot pad lower(kinda chore to do do on this machine and I snapped the plastic, I’m 6’5”). And when I even barely get to 21 I’m sure my form is off 😂😢. Demoralizing to say the least. May find something else aerobically lol.

I’m sure there’s a lot of apps out there, but I’ve been using “Metrownome.”
Im just thinking that Metronomes in general might also be worth covering. If there’s other tech tools for rowing you already like, that could make another interesting video and would be interested in hearing about them.
Hope you’ve been well.
Thought I was somewhat fit till I tried this “ beginner “ workout, I was wrong 😂
Great class thanks for helping,
Definitely got a pump on
Cheers
You are very motivating - thanks!!!
Exactly what I needed!
So relaxed fell a sleep 😴😴😴
awesome
I wonder what the resistance is set at for his workout. As well I wonder if he has the taller model or the shorter one.
I'm wondering what should the dial be on whole doing this work out.
Hey Austin, can you do a review on the Echelon Row machine. Is this a good machine?
can you build any muscle with rowing?
I have very stubborn tummy
How to reduce please guide ?
Why is the front of your C2 lower than the back? Is that to get more anterior tilt?
I have a stamina magnetic rower with 16 resistance options . Which level should I be doing this work out in ?
I really enjoy your videos. I just signed up to your app. Trying to get logged in. Apps says it is sending me a link to get logged in. I am not receiving the email???
Thanks Austin
Hey Bill!
Hmm.. check your spam and make sure you didn’t have any spelling mistakes in your email sign up!
Correction:Cannot set the footpad lower
Hey Austin, do you have your rower on a declined platform? It looks like the rear leg is level with your mat and the front casters are below it?
