I raised a Dalmatian from a pup nearly 40 years ago. Newton. He was so loving, smart, respectful, and full of playful energy. It’s been 25 years since he passed and I still have a difficult time looking at pictures. I’m tearing up as I write this. I miss having white hairs everywhere. The companionship was AMAZING! It was an honor to know him.
Completely understand! I have a 3 year old Dalmatian girl and cannot imagine my life with her! She is so precious and crazy at the same time. She's my baby girl.
"101 Dalmatians" is a part of my childhood. If my apartment complex permitted it; I would own a Dalmatian and name him Jeff. I befriended a firefighter named Jeff; that's my reason for wanting to name my Dalmatian Jeff.
My Dalmatian is exactly the same. Absolutely loves kids, cries if we leave him in another room, white hairs EVERYWHERE, my favorite shoes...gone, 5 books, 3 remotes gone. He needs to be run around and still doesn't get tired, wants to play everyday all day. He is the sweetest dog in the world. Ive owned / rescued 5 dalmatians, yes theyre high-energy LOVABLE dogs. My best-ever dal, katylee, she would let my little girls play/romp with her AND protect them ferociously!
Cream He A-Z run them out for two hours a day and you should be fine. Just don’t leave anything out just in case. Child protective locks won’t hurt. Plan on getting some before I get my babe. Also try not to leave them alone for more than 5 hours. Needy dogs I’ve noticed.
What a lovely video! So... I'm from Russia and I own a dalmatian for almost 5 years now. My biggest advice is work on their behavior, it's a very clever and energetic breed. This is a good way to train them physically and mentally. And honestly if you can pick girls, I've never seen a calm male dal. This is exactly what people are talking about when they say you gotta have time and space for them otherwise they'll just destroy your house. Girls are still like on amphetamine especially when they are young. You really have to put A LOT of time and effort in them in first 1.5-2 yrs. They will eventually slow down yeah, but it takes times to mature and all this stuff. You'll definitely notice it. Still a pretty crazy breed tho. Food... At this point I think my dog and most of other dals are hungry always, at any given moment. You've just fed it? It still would desperately try to get one or two bowls of food from you lmao. You gotta eventually learn not to buy their bullshit about how hungry they are. Some of them are allergic to lots of food, like mine... This is annoying, yeah you can't do shit about it in some cases, just live with that. Chances are there will no problems, but still you have to keep this in mind. Their hair/fur or whatever... Don't even try to fight against it. It's just not possible, accept the fact that it is everywhere, in your bed(even if you won't let dog in ur bed), furniture, keyboard, mouse, pc, phone(yep right inside it), sometimes in YOUR food. That's just how it is. And yeah, forget about wearing black clothes... You can use these disposable rollers, they do work fine, but u just can't take all of the hairs out of clothes. Ah I forgot to say one more thing about their energy levels. Don't even try to make them tired. This happened once in almost 6 yrs. We've been to a dog show in a city ~400km away from my town, we've been there for like 7hrs she was playing with other dogs for a lot of time. The amount of attention she got there was insane. Then we rode back, my mom dropped me at the park, we've been there for like a couple hours, and only then we headed home. Yeah this is what made her tired, a whole solid day of riding, playing, running. She was asleep for like 12 hours after this, but I hope I've made it clear, that this breed IS FULL of energy. I gotta say something in conclusion I think. It's a really lovely and nice breed, all this nonsense that they are aggressive and dumb is a so fucking big bullshit. It could be somewhat true for males, still rare cases and it mostly happens when they don't get enough of exercise. You have to put a lot of effort in this dog, but it pays off in the end. Dalmatians are full of love actually and if you are ready to care about your dog and really want this breed then go for it. Attention: you'll hate 101 dalmatian film in some time after owning this dog. I'm not kidding this film is what fucked this breed very very badly. And sorry for my grammar fuck ups I haven't opened a textbook in years. I think its something that people can understand at least, lmao

My dal just turned 2. I don't find the shedding all that bad, and he does well when we leave him. We did crate train him as a puppy when we were not home (but kept the periods short, a few hours at the most) and worked hard at controlling the environment, so the destruction was very minimal. However, given the chance he would destroy about anything. He has been out of his crate completely since about 14 or 15 months, and never destroys anything any more, although we do give him plenty to chew on if he wants to. My dal was also super easy to potty train and never messes in the house. He doesn't like kids, they make him nervous. He does not like strangers to approach him either, but he's fine if they let him approach them. And we did socialize him extensively as a puppy. But he is the friendliest dog at the dog park, with both people and dogs! He is a leaner, and leans his 75 pounds on anyone who will pet him. He also walks between people's legs for the same reason, scratches and rubs! He is extremely playful and is always instigating play with us, other dogs, and people. The energy is definitely high, and he gets one major outing every day, along with play in the yard and walks. By major I mean a trip to the dog park, or about 6 hours playing with other dogs in doggie daycare. My husband is retired, so someone is home most of the time. I agree with Adam, if you are gone at work all day or can't commit the time for significant off leash exercise every single day, then don't get a dalmatian. Walking alone will definitely not cut it. But that said, my husband and I agree that our dalmatian is the best, friendliest, funniest, most personable and loyal companion either one of us has ever had.
YUP. Yup.yup. I found a Dalmatian puppy when ideas 12 and I tired to keep him a secret because my dad hated dogs. There was an empty lot behind our house and I would sneak over and I found him. Along with my grandpa we built him a really big house and made it look like junk so people didn't investigate. He had food and water and I used all of my savings to get him to the vet. Eventually my dad found out and told me to get rid of him. I ended up moving into my grandpa's house with my dog and we lived qith him untill he grew old and passed on! Such kind sweet dogs! I could live with out Ann the hair though! Haha

Just found your channel and love this video. I'm a Dalmatian owner (my third) and proud! Yes, they are very energetic, demanding of your time and leave so much hair everywhere but I could not see myself owning any other breed! The love they give is immense and are a total joy and they do not have a bad bone in their body. I've only had a couple of chewing/destroying incidents as puppies so I've been extremely lucky as well as no toilet mishaps in the house. I agree that Dalmatians are not great around small children due to their size only as the dogs just want to play and will easily knock a child over without meaning to and the hair shedding is a royal pain! Dalmatians love company so my girls have always slept in their own bed beside mine at night but who can resist it when they jump up for a night time and morning cuddle - bliss!
I owned a Dalmatian 20 years ago. The breeder I bought my her from wouldn't sell me one of her pups unless I got a crate for her. Also told me to train, train and more training for the first year, and I'll have a great dog. Some advise I got from my vet; A basic obedient class is a must! I took my dog back several times. It made a huge difference in our quality of life. It teaches you to be the pack leader, because if you don't step up to lead, the dog will be more than happy to do it.
I have a Dalmatian, adopted from a humane society. "Kingston" was found as a stray on the streets, unneutered, ribs showing, not house trained. He is a sweet, sweet, dog, and has through Agility, learned obedience, but he is not the brightest, smartest dog I have ever had. He is on the small end of Dalmatian--only 50 pounds. He does sleep with me at night. Kingston doesn't "play", I don't think he knew how to when I 'rescued' him--he was around 2 years old. He does love his walks, and we go out on a trail practically every day.
My family has had four dalmatians (the first joined the family before I was born and the last recently died) and are awaiting number five. They are sweet, mischievous, playful, and smart dogs, but I don't know if it's possible to oversell how much attention and exercise they need (or how much they shed!). Two and three were litter mate puppies and they were adorable little devlis who just built on each other's energy. The only thing that would really exhaust them was a full day of hiking (we'd leave them unleashed and if you were on a ridge sometimes you could see them on top of a mountain...from another mountain.) A good dalmatian, like any dog, is all about good ownership and companionship and it sounds like you know what is needed. I hope you and Finn have a long life together.
Eating your house IS a Dalmatian thing. They grow out of it mostly in a few years. They can have separation anxiety too. Watch for skin problems. If you feed beef, they can develop skin allergies. I recommend food with salmon as the protein source. I've had Dalmatians since childhood. Also, keep an eye out for bladder stones and kidney infections. You are absolutely right about the importance of exercise and attention with this breed. Sounds like you two are doing well so far. Don't forget, when around kids they do not like ears and tails pulled on.

Great insight, thanks for making this. Just wanted to pop in and say on the destructive behaviour, he's young and he's with you pretty much all the time. He's absolutely going to have anxiety when you leave him, the old "let the dog get over it" doesn't work. You can absolutely make progress on this, it just takes time and dedicated positive reinforcement. You need to start by leaving him for as little as 2 minutes and building up once he's comfortable. Crate training can help, but you could litterally step outside the front door and do it that way. Good luck, he's a braw wee dug. We're looking into the breed as a potential companion for our husky so this was really helpful 😊
It has been years since my Dalmatian passed away and I miss him every single day. He belonged to my late grandparents. I took him after they passed. As a younger dog, he would dash out the back door and run laps around the yard. There was a race track where he ran. He was a great judge of people. If he didn't like someone, there was a good reason. I'm glad I took him on in his later years. He didn't require as much activity. He adjusted well to apartment life and never destroyed anything. We still had to take long walks almost to his last days. Dalmatians were bred as carriage dogs and ran 30 to 40 miles a day. They need the activity. Enjoy Finn, Adam.
Dalmations are super high energy dogs. I had one when i was a kid. I was kinda afraid of Patches tbh. He wasn't aggressive but he hurt me multiple times because of the playfulness described in this video. He just didnt realize his own size. I rememeber him being super smart though. My grandpa probably taught him 30+ tricks lol
Finn seems like a great candidate for an extra caller with is not as bad as some make it out to be, knowing from experience having used one on not 1 but 2 dogs, it just gives enough of a shock to tell him to behave and it feels like when your limb goes numb or when it goes to sleep.
I put my 13 year old Dalmatian to sleep today. Heartbroken 💔 Dalmatians really are the most loving and charismatic dogs and they are also really hard work, but so worth it!
I was.... Somewhat catfished into getting a Dalmatian. He was about a year old when I first got him and.... It has been very hard. He constantly wants to play fight which is dangerous when the kids go outside. Actually it's hard to even go outside to throw out the trash without getting scratched or nibbled on. He jumps on everybody all the time and it's hard to not get your clothes dirty/damaged. Also yes he destroys EVERYTHING and has dug very deep holes, dug up lines/cables, and turned over trash/recycling bin. You need space, need to be VERY active and not care that all you things get destroyed. They are incredibly smart, beautiful dogs who are also quite protective of the home but... Yea... Just keep these things in mind.
Our Dalmatian is now 13 years old, her back legs weakened last year but she has such strength of character and has pushed herself and is still with us a year later but now instead of the long walks she enjoyed with her friends she now only manages 2 short walks a day but every day is a bonus for us. She is on medication and tumeric and sees her vet regularly for checkups, he says she isn’t in any pain, still has a wonderful happy disposition so everything is OK for the time being. She does tumble occasionally but gets up wagging her tail knowing she will get an extra cuddle. Dalmatians are the most wonderful of dogs, lots of fun, very playful, very loyal, great with children but very strong and very determined, the owner has to show they are the pack leader. Purdie is always alert and will alert me to the slightest sound outdoors (we live in the countryside) her only downfall has been she is a bit of a bully with larger dogs as she considers herself top dog of the village but she's wonderful with smaller dogs, she adores Jack Russell’s.
I had a female rescue she was the best dog I ever had by far, she never messed in the house not once did not have to train, when I got her they told me she is a house dog and doesn't like to be left alone in the back yard, she will drive your neighbors crazy, well I wouldn't know she stayed in the house, very protective over my kids, didn't jump on my kids.I don't think every dal is the same,they are awesome have there own personality,they act stranger than other dogs.it has been 7 years since she got sick and I had to take her in to end her pain.i will always remember my dal Sophie RIP. Anyway great video, I agree if you are gonna get a dog it's a responsibility,in the long run the dog is worth it.
I have a dalmatian. Got her as a puppy. She is two years old now as of last month. I think it all depends on your dedication and patience. I got a female knowing they dont get as huge as the males and since I live in an apartment that was a semi-important factor. but not really. And she is fine in the apartment. She does have lots of energy naturally but she is probably the most laziest dalmatians haha. I live right next to a park so its not a problem for excerisize, but when other dogs show up at the park the other person will their ball or something and mine likes to chase the other dog, if the dog goes too far away she will stop and lay down until the dog comes back, she doesnt like running the full distance. If there is something in the far distance she wants to see, she will wait till it comes closer coz she doesnt like running super far away haha. And once I told her to lay down when inside and she goes all the way to my bedroom to lay on the bed rather than her dog bed or the floor (she is such a comfort snob!) And she gets so excited for bed (She gets overly excited for everything), but she especially loves going to sleep when I do.lol. All her energy shows when company are over coz she is so excited to see other people, or out and about. Otherwise she is very chilled out when at home. And there are only certain type of items she chews up anymore, unfortunetly my bras are her favorite. As she has aged many of her chewing problems have left unless its a few items (like my bra's). And she is the most kind spirited creature. She is also TERRIFIED by everything since the day I got her haha. She has gotten better, but still very timid about strange or new things. First day I got her she bolted inside terrified coz someone was walking on the sidewalk across the parking lot AND across the road. and also after a year the neighbor had a white recycling box that randomly showed up and then a bike two days later...she wouldnt pee outside for 2 weeks coz of it(even after it was gone!). she would pee right before the door, it was soo annoying haha. She's a character for sure, such a goofball. I love her tho!
My fam has adopted three Dalmatians and the youngest Blue was JUST like this. huge trouble maker as a puppy but he wasn't good with kids or dogs rip. He has separation anxiety so we don't ever leave him alone. he was very big as a puppy even so he's even bigger now, so the size and playfulness resulted in like 3 broken windows, our entire fence (we put up giant oak doors as our fence and he still managed to knock them down once I think.) and the poor bab broke a tooth biting a chunk out of our toilet. He grew out of that eventually though, he's still pretty playful but nowadays he just wants cuddles and he's always been the sweetest bby tbh. I love ur dog sm he's such a sweetheart.

My dalmatian/pit mix is about 4 months old, hes the sweetest boy ever. He's always wagging his tail, to the point where his entire butt shakes!! He's always looking for kisses and love, he's always full of energy, when he goes outside he sprints in circles for about 5 minutes straight. Just got a 14 week old Dalmatian. I work from home so it works well. He slept well next to my bed in his cage last night. What I don't know what to do is how to train him not to bite during playtime. I try to give him a chew toy and distract, sometimes works, sometimes not. How long before he grows out of that kind of play.
Your dog is adorable! I've had Dalmatians my whole life and they are very playful and excitable, the most affectionate and loyal dogs too, but also very clingy. They're like eternal puppies, they'll always act like a baby, even when they grow old. Though they do need a lot of attention and hate being left alone, it's totally worth it because they'll just love you so much and make sure you know it (I'm in bed right now with my full grown Dalmation asleep right on my lap, like the big child she is).

My family has had Dalmatians for a few generations now. They have energy and want to play lots, plus are the biggest sweethearts. They are great with kids. My current Dally, doesn't chew things, but will steal a shoe to cuddle with when he misses one of us or isn't getting the attention that he wants. There is hair everywhere and it shows up on everything, the black hairs on lighter clothes and the white hairs on dark and bold colors. The biggest thing about Dalmatians that people need to think about when looking at Dallys other than their energy is their independence. They, as coach dogs, didn't have someone to tell them what to do every moment of performing their job. They were left to their own devices when protecting the horses and coaches and made their own choices about who/what meant trouble. When owning a Dalmatian you need to quickly take dominance and understand that they may not get along with other pets because they know they are in charge. My uncle's most recent Dalmatian was a dog that he took in after a woman contacted him asking for help because her dog was fighting with her cat constantly. I hope this helped with the choice of to get a Dalmatian.

Had a damnation pup for like 5 months until parvo took him. Still remember how my children screamed seeing him for the first time. Just died on us, we all mourned. How a small dog could left so much to be cherished in just a short time is amazing
hey Adam, great vid & i gained a lot of info from it.. .question= i'm about to buy the Mrs a Dalmatian as part of her Christmas, but i have two options, 3 month puppy(anywhere) or a 6 month (who's owner is now in ill health). id like to know whether the 6 month is still young enough to train etc.. we have plenty of room (a house in countryside) and are both very active people. thanks
Proud mom of 2 Dalmatians. Aura my female (5 years old) and Mack my male (1.5 years old) . I had lots of time to train Aura because of work schedule and she comes from reputable breeders and championship bloodline; she is fairly well behaved, not destructive, she’s not a fan of other dogs/people because she is intensely protective over me. Mack is happy go lucky but again not a fan of other dogs/people because of protection reasons (more friendly than Aura), he also is very destructive if left alone even for 10 minutes; that may be my fault though because when I got him I was juggling school and work so I didn’t have much time for him, my parents did though, who helped me raise him. Mack didn’t come from a reputable breeder like Aura so genetics may come into play. Overall though they are very sweet dogs to their owner, they MUST be part of all family activities otherwise they become depressed (mine at least). My 2 dals love chasing a laser, which makes it easy to get their energy out. Overall though, if you want to get a dal, make sure the personality fits and life style, if the life style doesn’t fit make sure you have an alternative that is sufficient for the dog, like a laser beam if living in an apartment. Still the best dog in the world if properly trained and associated with other dogs. They are so loving and sweet to their owners; Dals crave attention and love, if you give them that they are happy.

I'm thinking of getting a dalmation as my first dog. I'm 20 years old living with my dad who has experience with German shepherds. Our house has about half an acre going around the whole house, plenty of playing space But is it enough? I really enjoy hiking and going out in the bush. Could I let a dalmation off leash and let it explore the forest with me? Iv always wanted a dalmation, iv done a a lot of research on them but I want your opinion. I'll be going to school and working part time. I want a strong bond with a dog, I'm kind of lonely so I think a dog would make me a lot happier Let me know what you think, thanks

Some of them do need special food. Each of our Dalmatians has a different need. One had emergency surgery for bladder stones at 1.5 years old, now he's on a special diet. The other one is wheat-intolerant. It depends on the individual dog.
I want to buy a dalmatian in future but I think it would be big problem when he would be destroying my things when I'll leave him. How do you do that when you leave him? Sounds like my Dobie... He wants to walk & run & walk & run all the time. The crate training was a similar experience, I failed to place the crate in my bedroom & Ollie would cry. Now he sleeps in the bed too. Sounds like he's not an easy first dog either. Cheap toys are the best toys.
Our Dalmatian will be 10 years old in March. We wished we had seen a video similar to this, prior to buying our Dalmatian. Although we live in the United States, we experienced the same thing that you did with your Dalmatian. When we would put him in his crate at night he would cry all night long. The last dog we had slept with us and we said when we got another dog, it would NOT be in our bed, but the crying was ridiculous. Bottom line is, once we allowed him to sleep with us the crying stopped. Dalmatians do not like to be alone, EVER!! They are very family-orientated.
I also have a 14 month old Dalmatian and everything you've said is exactly true! I've been through every single thing you've gone through. They're very friendly dogs but high maintenance.
Oh, and he's a howler. We let him outside in the mornings and he howls at all his friends. We live in Kansas and every Monday our tornado sirens go off at noon and he howls at them. He's very loving and needs lots and lots of attention.
Before my dad bring dalmatian i had seen only one, and it was definitely not pure bred, so i thought its a shitty breed. But when i saw that cute little 3-months old ,with big black frightened and smart eyes, i instantly fell inlove. Now my Gina is 11 months old and i can say I LOVE HER. I dont live with my parents so i dont get to see her very often but damn when im at my parents house i cant separate from that dog. What i love most about dalmatians is that they are really good and smart dogs. They are like babies no matter how old they are. They need a lot of attention otherwise they get sad. My Gina barks only when shes really happy like when she sees me or playful, shes quiet most of the time. When she encounters another creature, cat or dog or sheep or more, she just wants to play. She is always ready to play and hug and kiss. Since my dad brought Gina home, my facebook feed is filled with dalmatian videos and pics and i constantly watch dalmatian videos. Definitely my favorite dog breed ever.
Also Gina is so well behaved, i dont even know how she became so good, when we havent trained her strictly and everyday. Sometimes she doesnt obey, but generally he listens to us. But when left alone she is not destructive, she lays in bed waiting for someone to come. She sleeps all the time, she doesnt move, not eating or drinking. She hears you from far away, recognises even the car engine, and she gets hyped. I love that. All she destroys is her toys and food.
I'm a native of Brooklyn NY, I also got a dalmatian when he was young 6 months old from a friend in New Jersey. But I live in an apartment, luckily I got a balcony and rooftop access where my Lucky does his do. But Yes 🤣 hair everywhere 🚨
My dalmatian had the exactly same traits as you mentioned in your video. The best thing about them is that they are very tolerant and well tempered. I was a kid when we had him and despite irritating him all the time, never got a bite not even a growl. They need a lot of attention more than any dog i have seen but are very difficult to train as this breed lacks focus and are too playful. But have inborn excellent toilet manners and are very clean.

My wife wants a dalmation. I am in a condo that isn't small but also isn't huge. If i were to get a dalmation it would make me run in the morning and the afternoon. I grew up with Siamese and they were the definition of dalmation...always active. I work in the Navy and my wife is a teacher so during the day the dog would be home alone....what do you think?
I did not know Dalmatians was that hard to keep I always liked them and they seem like a good watchdog to let you know people's around or come to your door at night time I always like it but I didn't know that was bad for them to tell your place up like that then being grown dogs when they're puppies they will do that but lot of times they grow out of it it's a nice video I enjoy watching it thank you
I just rehomed a 10 year old Dalmatian. The first night she slept fine, actually slept 10 hours straight, but now she's been up every few hours all night. I've barely slept. I could blame my bunny, who seems to enjoy egging her on by running around like he usually does, but if you have any suggestions that would be helpful. I'm guessing its just a matter of more exercise or homesickness.
They were bred to run alongside carriages all day so be prepared to exercise them constantly! I ride by bike with my dog for around an hour every day (when there's no snow), and she's never gotten tired. I also take her to the dog park or for another 45 minute-1 hour walk/run every day, and again, she's just as energetic at the end as she was at the start :P It helps to have a room where your dog can stay when you're out, with no destroyable objects.
Tell me about the white hairs......everywhere - where do the black ones go? Dalmatians have energy, ours would do a 25 k run and be ready the next day for another and the next day and the next day for 12 years - seriously thinking about another but I’m 20 years older, have the time but do I have the energy? Wonderful breed.
We got a dalmation for my mom after my dad died. She became more than a part time job. However, I never experienced anyone ever loving me more than that dog. We did home hospice (I am a nurse). She passed away at 15 years. I miss her every day. I have videos of my hairy daughter on Abbydharma1. You can see how an old dalmation looks. She was beautiful no matter what age.
We've had our Dalmatian "Lexi" for about 12 years. Such a sweet loving dog. Lives with another small dog and 3 cats and gets along so well with them all. When out for a walk children are so thrilled with a Dalmatian (thanks to the movie). The kids just group around her and pet her and love her and she just loves it too. ..... White hairs everywhere is such an understatement and the hairs on the back have little hooks and are so hard to remove. .... Our Lexi is vegan...can't handle the protein in meats. Luckily this was discovered when she was about 10 weeks old so we have been careful with her diet ever since....easy as you can get vegan dog food. She chewed stuff when she was younger and we learned not to leave stuff around. Loves toys with a "squecky" in them....loves to rip them apart to destroy it. Toys don't last....have to choose toys that are safe for dog and for my walnut. We have a big backyard so lots of room to run. Our dog has adapted to our life very well. Just adopted a 4 month old male Dalmatian. Love the breed but was wondering if anyone has had issues with getting the younger ones to sleep through the night. I take him out at midnight and he does both "businesses" but like clockwork he's up at 4am. He sleeps in my room, right beside my bed in his own little bed with the area blocked off from the rest of the house with a baby gate. If it's normal I'd just like to know....I've had several different breeds over the years and I've never encountered this! Thanks to all.

I have a Dalmatian that sleeps in the bed with me too and other dal owners do the same- they get really bad separation anxiety when left alone if not left in a big house. If you want to own a Dalmatian and aren’t comfortable with sleeping in the bed with you don’t get one! They love sleeping and they’re very mischievous
They’re also very very playful and if you’re small in stature you will get knocked over or bruised because they truly don’t know their size! I have the sweetest boy and he is about 75 pounds of pure muscle and he loves to play and knock me right over and wrestle and lick me all over. Very sweet breed.
Lol you caught him peein. Beautiful dog dude. I'm a Pit Bull guy myself, that's really the only breed I'm interested in, but Dalmatians have been catching my attention lately. They are very cool looking dogs. Pits are very energetic and super friendly, at least mine is and all the ones I've ever met are. Every time I meet a Pit, they treat me like I'm their long lost friend and they're so happy to see I'm okay and doing well lol. My dog loves playing tug of war with a rope. She loves chasing a ball but she doesn't give it back, I have to pry it away from her. She's insanely friendly to everyone and she just adores kids. She doesn't realize how big she is though. My buddy's 1 1/2 year old likes to scream out to get my attention and waits for me to chase him. When my dog was there, he did it and anytime someone yells or seems mad or sad she bombards them with kisses. Every time the baby screamed she would start licking his face, but she pushes forward and almost knocks him on his butt every time haha. I would like a Dalmatian for her to hang out with, but my dog has had a lot of vet trips due to an easily upset stomach and other things that has cost a lot of money so I don't think I can afford another dog right now. She's got two cats to chase around though so she's happy. She likes to hump the boy cats like she's a boy dog haha. She'll straddle them and start air humping them it's hilarious. The cats don't find it very funny though lol. Cool dog man, I like him.
I live in Spain and one day a starving Dalmatian showed up at my door. (They tend to have puppies and throw them out when they get to much to handle)... Shes the best dog ever. Boundless energy and totally stupid which I like. She also loves water and if there's a muddy pool of water around she'll be right in it. You right about dalmations around kids though. All she wants to do is play, but she is big. One thing I've noticed is their hardiness. It can be very hot or very cold and it doesn't seem to bother them...
my pop was a Dalmatian breeder. I didn't meet him till I was around 6 years old. and I before I did meet him I have LOVED Dalmatians. if I could show u my room u would c that EVERYTHING I own is Dalmatians. from my duvet, pillow cases, iPhone case, computer case, Dalmatian poster, anything u say I probably have. every time I c a Dalmatian I will literally cry. thats how much I love them. I do also have 2 other dogs so I do know how to look after dogs. (ones an Australian kelpi and the other is a chihuahua and schnauzer cross) he is very hard work. and Boston the Australian kelpi is a lot less work altho they need to run all the time too. anyway this is suppose to be about Dalmatians. About the chewing, I'm not sure if you have the brand over there or heard of the brand but I swear on the Kong toys, also Nylabone Dura Chews are GREAT, Antlers are awesome too cuz they don't splinter and they can consume them. Having a Rottweiler I quickly learned some good brands that she wouldn't destroy as fast. So glad he has such a great hope! Thanks again for sharing this video
I responded to Craig Cowley, about "Don't waste your time on Pup Training", the only reason I didn't get My Dally certified was because of where we lived there was no one to certify when she was young, and then when I got out to where I could have, she was too old, and then I discovered that the places that were here never would have certified her because they hadn't raised & trained her themselves. That IS supposed to be changing now however. They can be AWESOME dogs, but take a LOT of work, however giving them a Job, is actually a hell of a way to make that work easier. If you should have a Dally, then they are Perfect, absolutely Multi-Purpose dogs. There's Nothing you can't get them to do(except shed, you can't get them to Not shed, even though she's been gone for several years now, we STILL find Dally hairs everywhere!) IF you are willing to spend the time, energy & effort. Ohh & a little bit on the Destructo-Dog properties is that My mom could not leave the house with out her routine to say Bye to the dog and be able to come home to her Laundry & Bed Linens intact. They Can be Vindictive, and messing with routine can be the slight that sets them off.
Emily Fogg mine had some when we first got him but he had been neglected and left outside. He had demodex mites that we got him treated for and now is completely fine. No skin issues anymore. You just have to do a lot of googling to research the certain kind they have and a visit to the vet. I feed him normal dog food with about a cup of water in it for better digesting and he super healthy. He's has two ear infections because he loves playing in the ocean and we didn't think to clean them out but other than that the only skin issues is he sheds a ton! So be ready for a lot of lint rollers. I love my Dal he is so amazingly sweet and affectionate. You can't go wrong.
Our dog was allergic to certain types of food, got into every wacky thing possible - vet bills were $$$ I called him the million dollar dog... He also had thyroid problems that almost killed him until we found a vet with experience with Dal's... Medicine helped the thyroid problem, prescription food - he could only eat Lamb $$$. But he was our fur baby, we did what was needed for our boy.
Finn is beautiful! Enjoy every moment! My Dal was a vegetarian which sounds crazy (it did to me too when my vet suggested it when she was a puppy) however they often cannot properly digest meat protein so they can get an orange cast to their skin and it starts flaking, which is called bronzing. The veg dog food totally saved her skin and she did really well on it. I gave her fresh veggies on top of her veg dog food diet. No other health issues except for one time she injured herself while out running with another dog - she was very competitive and ended up spraining her ankle. Other than that, perfect health until she passed away. As for obedience, she could have won awards and I never worried about her being off leash, ever. If I asked her to sit, lie down, wait, pee, etc she would do it immediately. Having said that, we didn't get to that point until she was about 3 years old. Before that she was a running terror and needed a fenced in dog park. She was also amazing with other animals, both my cats and my horse as well as two ferrets and everyone else's pets as well. She was never a chewer so I didn't have to worry about that stuff but her vice was food. She would eat anything except lettuce so I could never leave food lying around, but nobody's perfect ;) But OMG the hair. Dalmatians are one of the highest shedding breeds for such short coats and the hairs themselves are short and sharp and I would sometimes find one poking in to the bottom of my toe like a sliver. So if you are very particular about that sort of thing and/or insist on wearing a lot of black clothing, then be warned! I learned to love grey. In terms of temperament, she grew up to be a chill dog but from a puppy was always sweet and hyper-aware emotionally as well as being possessive/intense, if you can imagine that combination. And yes they do indeed love to be with their 'Person' all the time. They also tend to bond extremely closely with that one person so that might be a deciding factor as well. They are really fun, silly and goofy dogs though. They really love to play and have fun and will make up games on the spot. The one other thing I should mention is that many Dals do not do well with kids. (Some do, but it depends a lot a variety of factors.) Mine was not a fan at all. She would always give me a look when kids were around and I knew she was being tolerant but not not happy about it. The last thing I will say (sorry this is so long!) is that Dalmatians are highly sensitive dogs so you will get back from them what you put out, energetically speaking. They can also be very stubborn so people think they are not intelligent - not true! They are very smart indeed, but they are possessive and I think they want you to earn their devotion but once you have it, you have it forever. She lived to be 16 and was the love of my life.

I raised a Dalmatian from a pup nearly 40 years ago. Newton. He was so loving, smart, respectful, and full of playful energy. It’s been 25 years since he passed and I still have a difficult time looking at pictures. I’m tearing up as I write this. I miss having white hairs everywhere. The companionship was AMAZING! It was an honor to know him.

My Dalmatian is exactly the same. Absolutely loves kids, cries if we leave him in another room, white hairs EVERYWHERE, my favorite shoes...gone, 5 books, 3 remotes gone. He needs to be run around and still doesn't get tired, wants to play everyday all day. He is the sweetest dog in the world. Ive owned / rescued 5 dalmatians, yes theyre high-energy LOVABLE dogs. My best-ever dal, katylee, she would let my little girls play/romp with her AND protect them ferociously!
Cream He A-Z run them out for two hours a day and you should be fine. Just don’t leave anything out just in case. Child protective locks won’t hurt. Plan on getting some before I get my babe. Also try not to leave them alone for more than 5 hours. Needy dogs I’ve noticed.

So... I'm from Russia and I own a dalmatian for almost 5 years now.
My biggest advice is work on their behavior, it's a very clever and energetic breed. This is a good way to train them physically and mentally. And honestly if you can pick girls, I've never seen a calm male dal. This is exactly what people are talking about when they say you gotta have time and space for them otherwise they'll just destroy your house. Girls are still like on amphetamine especially when they are young. You really have to put A LOT of time and effort in them in first 1.5-2 yrs. They will eventually slow down yeah, but it takes times to mature and all this stuff. You'll definitely notice it. Still a pretty crazy breed tho.
Food... At this point I think my dog and most of other dals are hungry always, at any given moment. You've just fed it? It still would desperately try to get one or two bowls of food from you lmao. You gotta eventually learn not to buy their bullshit about how hungry they are.
Some of them are allergic to lots of food, like mine... This is annoying, yeah you can't do shit about it in some cases, just live with that. Chances are there will no problems, but still you have to keep this in mind.
Their hair/fur or whatever... Don't even try to fight against it. It's just not possible, accept the fact that it is everywhere, in your bed(even if you won't let dog in ur bed), furniture, keyboard, mouse, pc, phone(yep right inside it), sometimes in YOUR food. That's just how it is. And yeah, forget about wearing black clothes... You can use these disposable rollers, they do work fine, but u just can't take all of the hairs out of clothes.
Ah I forgot to say one more thing about their energy levels. Don't even try to make them tired. This happened once in almost 6 yrs. We've been to a dog show in a city ~400km away from my town, we've been there for like 7hrs she was playing with other dogs for a lot of time. The amount of attention she got there was insane. Then we rode back, my mom dropped me at the park, we've been there for like a couple hours, and only then we headed home. Yeah this is what made her tired, a whole solid day of riding, playing, running. She was asleep for like 12 hours after this, but I hope I've made it clear, that this breed IS FULL of energy.
I gotta say something in conclusion I think. It's a really lovely and nice breed, all this nonsense that they are aggressive and dumb is a so fucking big bullshit. It could be somewhat true for males, still rare cases and it mostly happens when they don't get enough of exercise. You have to put a lot of effort in this dog, but it pays off in the end. Dalmatians are full of love actually and if you are ready to care about your dog and really want this breed then go for it.
Attention: you'll hate 101 dalmatian film in some time after owning this dog. I'm not kidding this film is what fucked this breed very very badly.

My dal just turned 2. I don't find the shedding all that bad, and he does well when we leave him. We did crate train him as a puppy when we were not home (but kept the periods short, a few hours at the most) and worked hard at controlling the environment, so the destruction was very minimal. However, given the chance he would destroy about anything. He has been out of his crate completely since about 14 or 15 months, and never destroys anything any more, although we do give him plenty to chew on if he wants to. My dal was also super easy to potty train and never messes in the house. He doesn't like kids, they make him nervous. He does not like strangers to approach him either, but he's fine if they let him approach them. And we did socialize him extensively as a puppy. But he is the friendliest dog at the dog park, with both people and dogs! He is a leaner, and leans his 75 pounds on anyone who will pet him. He also walks between people's legs for the same reason, scratches and rubs! He is extremely playful and is always instigating play with us, other dogs, and people. The energy is definitely high, and he gets one major outing every day, along with play in the yard and walks. By major I mean a trip to the dog park, or about 6 hours playing with other dogs in doggie daycare. My husband is retired, so someone is home most of the time. I agree with Adam, if you are gone at work all day or can't commit the time for significant off leash exercise every single day, then don't get a dalmatian. Walking alone will definitely not cut it. But that said, my husband and I agree that our dalmatian is the best, friendliest, funniest, most personable and loyal companion either one of us has ever had.
YUP. Yup.yup. I found a Dalmatian puppy when ideas 12 and I tired to keep him a secret because my dad hated dogs. There was an empty lot behind our house and I would sneak over and I found him. Along with my grandpa we built him a really big house and made it look like junk so people didn't investigate. He had food and water and I used all of my savings to get him to the vet. Eventually my dad found out and told me to get rid of him. I ended up moving into my grandpa's house with my dog and we lived qith him untill he grew old and passed on! Such kind sweet dogs! I could live with out Ann the hair though! Haha

Just found your channel and love this video. I'm a Dalmatian owner (my third) and proud! Yes, they are very energetic, demanding of your time and leave so much hair everywhere but I could not see myself owning any other breed! The love they give is immense and are a total joy and they do not have a bad bone in their body. I've only had a couple of chewing/destroying incidents as puppies so I've been extremely lucky as well as no toilet mishaps in the house. I agree that Dalmatians are not great around small children due to their size only as the dogs just want to play and will easily knock a child over without meaning to and the hair shedding is a royal pain! Dalmatians love company so my girls have always slept in their own bed beside mine at night but who can resist it when they jump up for a night time and morning cuddle - bliss!

I owned a Dalmatian 20 years ago. The breeder I bought my her from wouldn't sell me one of her pups unless I got a crate for her. Also told me to train, train and more training for the first year, and I'll have a great dog. Some advise I got from my vet; A basic obedient class is a must! I took my dog back several times. It made a huge difference in our quality of life. It teaches you to be the pack leader, because if you don't step up to lead, the dog will be more than happy to do it.
I have a Dalmatian, adopted from a humane society. "Kingston" was found as a stray on the streets, unneutered, ribs showing, not house trained. He is a sweet, sweet, dog, and has through Agility, learned obedience, but he is not the brightest, smartest dog I have ever had. He is on the small end of Dalmatian--only 50 pounds. He does sleep with me at night. Kingston doesn't "play", I don't think he knew how to when I 'rescued' him--he was around 2 years old. He does love his walks, and we go out on a trail practically every day.

My family has had four dalmatians (the first joined the family before I was born and the last recently died) and are awaiting number five. They are sweet, mischievous, playful, and smart dogs, but I don't know if it's possible to oversell how much attention and exercise they need (or how much they shed!). Two and three were litter mate puppies and they were adorable little devlis who just built on each other's energy. The only thing that would really exhaust them was a full day of hiking (we'd leave them unleashed and if you were on a ridge sometimes you could see them on top of a mountain...from another mountain.) A good dalmatian, like any dog, is all about good ownership and companionship and it sounds like you know what is needed. I hope you and Finn have a long life together.
Eating your house IS a Dalmatian thing. They grow out of it mostly in a few years. They can have separation anxiety too. Watch for skin problems. If you feed beef, they can develop skin allergies. I recommend food with salmon as the protein source. I've had Dalmatians since childhood. Also, keep an eye out for bladder stones and kidney infections. You are absolutely right about the importance of exercise and attention with this breed. Sounds like you two are doing well so far. Don't forget, when around kids they do not like ears and tails pulled on.

Great insight, thanks for making this. Just wanted to pop in and say on the destructive behaviour, he's young and he's with you pretty much all the time. He's absolutely going to have anxiety when you leave him, the old "let the dog get over it" doesn't work. You can absolutely make progress on this, it just takes time and dedicated positive reinforcement. You need to start by leaving him for as little as 2 minutes and building up once he's comfortable. Crate training can help, but you could litterally step outside the front door and do it that way. Good luck, he's a braw wee dug. We're looking into the breed as a potential companion for our husky so this was really helpful 😊

It has been years since my Dalmatian passed away and I miss him every single day. He belonged to my late grandparents. I took him after they passed. As a younger dog, he would dash out the back door and run laps around the yard. There was a race track where he ran. He was a great judge of people. If he didn't like someone, there was a good reason. I'm glad I took him on in his later years. He didn't require as much activity. He adjusted well to apartment life and never destroyed anything. We still had to take long walks almost to his last days. Dalmatians were bred as carriage dogs and ran 30 to 40 miles a day. They need the activity. Enjoy Finn, Adam.
Dalmations are super high energy dogs. I had one when i was a kid. I was kinda afraid of Patches tbh. He wasn't aggressive but he hurt me multiple times because of the playfulness described in this video. He just didnt realize his own size. I rememeber him being super smart though. My grandpa probably taught him 30+ tricks lol
Finn seems like a great candidate for an extra caller with is not as bad as some make it out to be, knowing from experience having used one on not 1 but 2 dogs, it just gives enough of a shock to tell him to behave and it feels like when your limb goes numb or when it goes to sleep.

I was.... Somewhat catfished into getting a Dalmatian. He was about a year old when I first got him and.... It has been very hard. He constantly wants to play fight which is dangerous when the kids go outside. Actually it's hard to even go outside to throw out the trash without getting scratched or nibbled on. He jumps on everybody all the time and it's hard to not get your clothes dirty/damaged. Also yes he destroys EVERYTHING and has dug very deep holes, dug up lines/cables, and turned over trash/recycling bin. You need space, need to be VERY active and not care that all you things get destroyed. They are incredibly smart, beautiful dogs who are also quite protective of the home but... Yea... Just keep these things in mind.

Our Dalmatian is now 13 years old, her back legs weakened last year but she has such strength of character and has pushed herself and is still with us a year later but now instead of the long walks she enjoyed with her friends she now only manages 2 short walks a day but every day is a bonus for us. She is on medication and tumeric and sees her vet regularly for checkups, he says she isn’t in any pain, still has a wonderful happy disposition so everything is OK for the time being. She does tumble occasionally but gets up wagging her tail knowing she will get an extra cuddle. Dalmatians are the most wonderful of dogs, lots of fun, very playful, very loyal, great with children but very strong and very determined, the owner has to show they are the pack leader. Purdie is always alert and will alert me to the slightest sound outdoors (we live in the countryside) her only downfall has been she is a bit of a bully with larger dogs as she considers herself top dog of the village but she's wonderful with smaller dogs, she adores Jack Russell’s.
I had a female rescue she was the best dog I ever had by far, she never messed in the house not once did not have to train, when I got her they told me she is a house dog and doesn't like to be left alone in the back yard, she will drive your neighbors crazy, well I wouldn't know she stayed in the house, very protective over my kids, didn't jump on my kids.I don't think every dal is the same,they are awesome have there own personality,they act stranger than other dogs.it has been 7 years since she got sick and I had to take her in to end her pain.i will always remember my dal Sophie RIP. Anyway great video, I agree if you are gonna get a dog it's a responsibility,in the long run the dog is worth it.
I have a dalmatian. Got her as a puppy. She is two years old now as of last month. I think it all depends on your dedication and patience. I got a female knowing they dont get as huge as the males and since I live in an apartment that was a semi-important factor. but not really. And she is fine in the apartment. She does have lots of energy naturally but she is probably the most laziest dalmatians haha. I live right next to a park so its not a problem for excerisize, but when other dogs show up at the park the other person will their ball or something and mine likes to chase the other dog, if the dog goes too far away she will stop and lay down until the dog comes back, she doesnt like running the full distance. If there is something in the far distance she wants to see, she will wait till it comes closer coz she doesnt like running super far away haha. And once I told her to lay down when inside and she goes all the way to my bedroom to lay on the bed rather than her dog bed or the floor (she is such a comfort snob!) And she gets so excited for bed (She gets overly excited for everything), but she especially loves going to sleep when I do.lol. All her energy shows when company are over coz she is so excited to see other people, or out and about. Otherwise she is very chilled out when at home. And there are only certain type of items she chews up anymore, unfortunetly my bras are her favorite. As she has aged many of her chewing problems have left unless its a few items (like my bra's). And she is the most kind spirited creature. She is also TERRIFIED by everything since the day I got her haha. She has gotten better, but still very timid about strange or new things. First day I got her she bolted inside terrified coz someone was walking on the sidewalk across the parking lot AND across the road. and also after a year the neighbor had a white recycling box that randomly showed up and then a bike two days later...she wouldnt pee outside for 2 weeks coz of it(even after it was gone!). she would pee right before the door, it was soo annoying haha. She's a character for sure, such a goofball. I love her tho!

My fam has adopted three Dalmatians and the youngest Blue was JUST like this. huge trouble maker as a puppy but he wasn't good with kids or dogs rip. He has separation anxiety so we don't ever leave him alone. he was very big as a puppy even so he's even bigger now, so the size and playfulness resulted in like 3 broken windows, our entire fence (we put up giant oak doors as our fence and he still managed to knock them down once I think.) and the poor bab broke a tooth biting a chunk out of our toilet. He grew out of that eventually though, he's still pretty playful but nowadays he just wants cuddles and he's always been the sweetest bby tbh.

My dalmatian/pit mix is about 4 months old, hes the sweetest boy ever. He's always wagging his tail, to the point where his entire butt shakes!! He's always looking for kisses and love, he's always full of energy, when he goes outside he sprints in circles for about 5 minutes straight. Just got a 14 week old Dalmatian. I work from home so it works well. He slept well next to my bed in his cage last night. What I don't know what to do is how to train him not to bite during playtime. I try to give him a chew toy and distract, sometimes works, sometimes not. How long before he grows out of that kind of play.
Your dog is adorable! I've had Dalmatians my whole life and they are very playful and excitable, the most affectionate and loyal dogs too, but also very clingy. They're like eternal puppies, they'll always act like a baby, even when they grow old. Though they do need a lot of attention and hate being left alone, it's totally worth it because they'll just love you so much and make sure you know it (I'm in bed right now with my full grown Dalmation asleep right on my lap, like the big child she is).

My family has had Dalmatians for a few generations now. They have energy and want to play lots, plus are the biggest sweethearts. They are great with kids. My current Dally, doesn't chew things, but will steal a shoe to cuddle with when he misses one of us or isn't getting the attention that he wants. There is hair everywhere and it shows up on everything, the black hairs on lighter clothes and the white hairs on dark and bold colors.
The biggest thing about Dalmatians that people need to think about when looking at Dallys other than their energy is their independence. They, as coach dogs, didn't have someone to tell them what to do every moment of performing their job. They were left to their own devices when protecting the horses and coaches and made their own choices about who/what meant trouble. When owning a Dalmatian you need to quickly take dominance and understand that they may not get along with other pets because they know they are in charge. My uncle's most recent Dalmatian was a dog that he took in after a woman contacted him asking for help because her dog was fighting with her cat constantly.

Had a damnation pup for like 5 months until parvo took him. Still remember how my children screamed seeing him for the first time. Just died on us, we all mourned. How a small dog could left so much to be cherished in just a short time is amazing

Proud mom of 2 Dalmatians. Aura my female (5 years old) and Mack my male (1.5 years old) . I had lots of time to train Aura because of work schedule and she comes from reputable breeders and championship bloodline; she is fairly well behaved, not destructive, she’s not a fan of other dogs/people because she is intensely protective over me. Mack is happy go lucky but again not a fan of other dogs/people because of protection reasons (more friendly than Aura), he also is very destructive if left alone even for 10 minutes; that may be my fault though because when I got him I was juggling school and work so I didn’t have much time for him, my parents did though, who helped me raise him. Mack didn’t come from a reputable breeder like Aura so genetics may come into play. Overall though they are very sweet dogs to their owner, they MUST be part of all family activities otherwise they become depressed (mine at least). My 2 dals love chasing a laser, which makes it easy to get their energy out. Overall though, if you want to get a dal, make sure the personality fits and life style, if the life style doesn’t fit make sure you have an alternative that is sufficient for the dog, like a laser beam if living in an apartment. Still the best dog in the world if properly trained and associated with other dogs. They are so loving and sweet to their owners; Dals crave attention and love, if you give them that they are happy.

Some of them do need special food. Each of our Dalmatians has a different need. One had emergency surgery for bladder stones at 1.5 years old, now he's on a special diet. The other one is wheat-intolerant. It depends on the individual dog.
I want to buy a dalmatian in future but I think it would be big problem when he would be destroying my things when I'll leave him. How do you do that when you leave him? Sounds like my Dobie... He wants to walk & run & walk & run all the time. The crate training was a similar experience, I failed to place the crate in my bedroom & Ollie would cry. Now he sleeps in the bed too. Sounds like he's not an easy first dog either. Cheap toys are the best toys.
Our Dalmatian will be 10 years old in March. We wished we had seen a video similar to this, prior to buying our Dalmatian. Although we live in the United States, we experienced the same thing that you did with your Dalmatian. When we would put him in his crate at night he would cry all night long. The last dog we had slept with us and we said when we got another dog, it would NOT be in our bed, but the crying was ridiculous. Bottom line is, once we allowed him to sleep with us the crying stopped. Dalmatians do not like to be alone, EVER!! They are very family-orientated.
I also have a 14 month old Dalmatian and everything you've said is exactly true! I've been through every single thing you've gone through. They're very friendly dogs but high maintenance.
Oh, and he's a howler. We let him outside in the mornings and he howls at all his friends. We live in Kansas and every Monday our tornado sirens go off at noon and he howls at them. He's very loving and needs lots and lots of attention.
Before my dad bring dalmatian i had seen only one, and it was definitely not pure bred, so i thought its a shitty breed. But when i saw that cute little 3-months old ,with big black frightened and smart eyes, i instantly fell inlove. Now my Gina is 11 months old and i can say I LOVE HER. I dont live with my parents so i dont get to see her very often but damn when im at my parents house i cant separate from that dog. What i love most about dalmatians is that they are really good and smart dogs. They are like babies no matter how old they are. They need a lot of attention otherwise they get sad. My Gina barks only when shes really happy like when she sees me or playful, shes quiet most of the time. When she encounters another creature, cat or dog or sheep or more, she just wants to play. She is always ready to play and hug and kiss. Since my dad brought Gina home, my facebook feed is filled with dalmatian videos and pics and i constantly watch dalmatian videos. Definitely my favorite dog breed ever.
Also Gina is so well behaved, i dont even know how she became so good, when we havent trained her strictly and everyday. Sometimes she doesnt obey, but generally he listens to us. But when left alone she is not destructive, she lays in bed waiting for someone to come. She sleeps all the time, she doesnt move, not eating or drinking. She hears you from far away, recognises even the car engine, and she gets hyped. I love that. All she destroys is her toys and food.

My dalmatian had the exactly same traits as you mentioned in your video. The best thing about them is that they are very tolerant and well tempered. I was a kid when we had him and despite irritating him all the time, never got a bite not even a growl.
They need a lot of attention more than any dog i have seen but are very difficult to train as this breed lacks focus and are too playful.
But have inborn excellent toilet manners and are very clean.

My wife wants a dalmation. I am in a condo that isn't small but also isn't huge. If i were to get a dalmation it would make me run in the morning and the afternoon. I grew up with Siamese and they were the definition of dalmation...always active. I work in the Navy and my wife is a teacher so during the day the dog would be home alone....what do you think?

I did not know Dalmatians was that hard to keep I always liked them and they seem like a good watchdog to let you know people's around or come to your door at night time I always like it but I didn't know that was bad for them to tell your place up like that then being grown dogs when they're puppies they will do that but lot of times they grow out of it it's a nice video I enjoy watching it thank you
I just rehomed a 10 year old Dalmatian. The first night she slept fine, actually slept 10 hours straight, but now she's been up every few hours all night. I've barely slept. I could blame my bunny, who seems to enjoy egging her on by running around like he usually does, but if you have any suggestions that would be helpful. I'm guessing its just a matter of more exercise or homesickness.
They were bred to run alongside carriages all day so be prepared to exercise them constantly! I ride by bike with my dog for around an hour every day (when there's no snow), and she's never gotten tired. I also take her to the dog park or for another 45 minute-1 hour walk/run every day, and again, she's just as energetic at the end as she was at the start :P
It helps to have a room where your dog can stay when you're out, with no destroyable objects.

Dalmatians have energy, ours would do a 25 k run and be ready the next day for another and the next day and the next day for 12 years - seriously thinking about another but I’m 20 years older, have the time but do I have the energy? Wonderful breed.
We got a dalmation for my mom after my dad died. She became more than a part time job. However, I never experienced anyone ever loving me more than that dog. We did home hospice (I am a nurse). She passed away at 15 years. I miss her every day. I have videos of my hairy daughter on Abbydharma1. You can see how an old dalmation looks. She was beautiful no matter what age.
We've had our Dalmatian "Lexi" for about 12 years. Such a sweet loving dog. Lives with another small dog and 3 cats and gets along so well with them all. When out for a walk children are so thrilled with a Dalmatian (thanks to the movie). The kids just group around her and pet her and love her and she just loves it too. ..... White hairs everywhere is such an understatement and the hairs on the back have little hooks and are so hard to remove. .... Our Lexi is vegan...can't handle the protein in meats. Luckily this was discovered when she was about 10 weeks old so we have been careful with her diet ever since....easy as you can get vegan dog food. She chewed stuff when she was younger and we learned not to leave stuff around. Loves toys with a "squecky" in them....loves to rip them apart to destroy it. Toys don't last....have to choose toys that are safe for dog and for my walnut. We have a big backyard so lots of room to run. Our dog has adapted to our life very well. Hope you have years of happiness with your Dal as we have had with ours. Take care.
Just adopted a 4 month old male Dalmatian. Love the breed but was wondering if anyone has had issues with getting the younger ones to sleep through the night. I take him out at midnight and he does both "businesses" but like clockwork he's up at 4am. He sleeps in my room, right beside my bed in his own little bed with the area blocked off from the rest of the house with a baby gate. If it's normal I'd just like to know....I've had several different breeds over the years and I've never encountered this! Thanks to all.

Get him a friend, that helped my dog loads, he needed considerably less attention when he had a friend and less seperation anxiety too.
I have a Dalmatian that sleeps in the bed with me too and other dal owners do the same- they get really bad separation anxiety when left alone if not left in a big house. If you want to own a Dalmatian and aren’t comfortable with sleeping in the bed with you don’t get one! They love sleeping and they’re very mischievous
They’re also very very playful and if you’re small in stature you will get knocked over or bruised because they truly don’t know their size! I have the sweetest boy and he is about 75 pounds of pure muscle and he loves to play and knock me right over and wrestle and lick me all over. Very sweet breed.
Lol you caught him peein. Beautiful dog dude. I'm a Pit Bull guy myself, that's really the only breed I'm interested in, but Dalmatians have been catching my attention lately. They are very cool looking dogs. Pits are very energetic and super friendly, at least mine is and all the ones I've ever met are. Every time I meet a Pit, they treat me like I'm their long lost friend and they're so happy to see I'm okay and doing well lol. My dog loves playing tug of war with a rope. She loves chasing a ball but she doesn't give it back, I have to pry it away from her. She's insanely friendly to everyone and she just adores kids. She doesn't realize how big she is though. My buddy's 1 1/2 year old likes to scream out to get my attention and waits for me to chase him. When my dog was there, he did it and anytime someone yells or seems mad or sad she bombards them with kisses. Every time the baby screamed she would start licking his face, but she pushes forward and almost knocks him on his butt every time haha. I would like a Dalmatian for her to hang out with, but my dog has had a lot of vet trips due to an easily upset stomach and other things that has cost a lot of money so I don't think I can afford another dog right now. She's got two cats to chase around though so she's happy. She likes to hump the boy cats like she's a boy dog haha. She'll straddle them and start air humping them it's hilarious. The cats don't find it very funny though lol. Cool dog man, I like him.
I live in Spain and one day a starving Dalmatian showed up at my door. (They tend to have puppies and throw them out when they get to much to handle)... Shes the best dog ever. Boundless energy and totally stupid which I like. She also loves water and if there's a muddy pool of water around she'll be right in it. You right about dalmations around kids though. All she wants to do is play, but she is big. One thing I've noticed is their hardiness. It can be very hot or very cold and it doesn't seem to bother them...

every time I c a Dalmatian I will literally cry. thats how much I love them. I do also have 2 other dogs so I do know how to look after dogs. (ones an Australian kelpi and the other is a chihuahua and schnauzer cross) he is very hard work. and Boston the Australian kelpi is a lot less work altho they need to run all the time too. anyway this is suppose to be about Dalmatians.

About the chewing, I'm not sure if you have the brand over there or heard of the brand but I swear on the Kong toys, also Nylabone Dura Chews are GREAT, Antlers are awesome too cuz they don't splinter and they can consume them. Having a Rottweiler I quickly learned some good brands that she wouldn't destroy as fast. So glad he has such a great hope! Thanks again for sharing this video

I responded to Craig Cowley, about "Don't waste your time on Pup Training", the only reason I didn't get My Dally certified was because of where we lived there was no one to certify when she was young, and then when I got out to where I could have, she was too old, and then I discovered that the places that were here never would have certified her because they hadn't raised & trained her themselves.
That IS supposed to be changing now however.
They can be AWESOME dogs, but take a LOT of work, however giving them a Job, is actually a hell of a way to make that work easier. If you should have a Dally, then they are Perfect, absolutely Multi-Purpose dogs. There's Nothing you can't get them to do(except shed, you can't get them to Not shed, even though she's been gone for several years now, we STILL find Dally hairs everywhere!) IF you are willing to spend the time, energy & effort.
Ohh & a little bit on the Destructo-Dog properties is that My mom could not leave the house with out her routine to say Bye to the dog and be able to come home to her Laundry & Bed Linens intact. They Can be Vindictive, and messing with routine can be the slight that sets them off.

Emily Fogg mine had some when we first got him but he had been neglected and left outside. He had demodex mites that we got him treated for and now is completely fine. No skin issues anymore. You just have to do a lot of googling to research the certain kind they have and a visit to the vet. I feed him normal dog food with about a cup of water in it for better digesting and he super healthy. He's has two ear infections because he loves playing in the ocean and we didn't think to clean them out but other than that the only skin issues is he sheds a ton! So be ready for a lot of lint rollers. I love my Dal he is so amazingly sweet and affectionate. You can't go wrong.
Our dog was allergic to certain types of food, got into every wacky thing possible - vet bills were $$$ I called him the million dollar dog... He also had thyroid problems that almost killed him until we found a vet with experience with Dal's... Medicine helped the thyroid problem, prescription food - he could only eat Lamb $$$. But he was our fur baby, we did what was needed for our boy.

My Dal was a vegetarian which sounds crazy (it did to me too when my vet suggested it when she was a puppy) however they often cannot properly digest meat protein so they can get an orange cast to their skin and it starts flaking, which is called bronzing. The veg dog food totally saved her skin and she did really well on it. I gave her fresh veggies on top of her veg dog food diet. No other health issues except for one time she injured herself while out running with another dog - she was very competitive and ended up spraining her ankle. Other than that, perfect health until she passed away.
As for obedience, she could have won awards and I never worried about her being off leash, ever. If I asked her to sit, lie down, wait, pee, etc she would do it immediately. Having said that, we didn't get to that point until she was about 3 years old. Before that she was a running terror and needed a fenced in dog park. She was also amazing with other animals, both my cats and my horse as well as two ferrets and everyone else's pets as well.
She was never a chewer so I didn't have to worry about that stuff but her vice was food. She would eat anything except lettuce so I could never leave food lying around, but nobody's perfect ;)
But OMG the hair. Dalmatians are one of the highest shedding breeds for such short coats and the hairs themselves are short and sharp and I would sometimes find one poking in to the bottom of my toe like a sliver. So if you are very particular about that sort of thing and/or insist on wearing a lot of black clothing, then be warned! I learned to love grey.
In terms of temperament, she grew up to be a chill dog but from a puppy was always sweet and hyper-aware emotionally as well as being possessive/intense, if you can imagine that combination. And yes they do indeed love to be with their 'Person' all the time. They also tend to bond extremely closely with that one person so that might be a deciding factor as well. They are really fun, silly and goofy dogs though. They really love to play and have fun and will make up games on the spot.
The one other thing I should mention is that many Dals do not do well with kids. (Some do, but it depends a lot a variety of factors.) Mine was not a fan at all. She would always give me a look when kids were around and I knew she was being tolerant but not not happy about it.
The last thing I will say (sorry this is so long!) is that Dalmatians are highly sensitive dogs so you will get back from them what you put out, energetically speaking. They can also be very stubborn so people think they are not intelligent - not true! They are very smart indeed, but they are possessive and I think they want you to earn their devotion but once you have it, you have it forever.
