The only Guardian who talks about having a good relationship with his parents is Drax, and despite being very literal and blunt, he’s the only one who has no trouble expressing himself. The rest all had rough childhoods and a difficult or even abusive relationship with parental figures, and it’s lead to all of them having difficulty being vulnerable and emotionally honest with others and themselves. I love how this movie really explores that with each character. I feel like a lot of people didn’t like this Guardians movie as much as the other two, but it’s my favorite. If for no other reason than Michael Rooker being so stinkin’ cool as Yondu.
I really love it whenever Quynh bursts out laughing like she does, because she just radiates fun and joy to the point that it makes me smile and lightens my own spirits, so I really appreciate her presence.

Fun fact: both Kurt Russell (Ego, Peter's dad) and Michael Rooker (Yondu) made movies with Sylvester Stallone: Kurt in "Tango & Cash" and Rooker in "Cliffhanger", and both are very good ones, you've should watch!
When this movie first came out, I was still quite newly a stepfather. Yondu's arc has always and will always hit me like a ton of bricks. And when you are talking about how they're all broken people, it makes me think of a line from a song: "We're all exiles here in madness, kicking down each others' doors."
In the comics, Ego The Living Planet is a very powerful cosmic being but he is not one of the Celestials. Peter Quill is not the son of Ego, but he is a Human / Alien Hybrid. His father was Emperor of a powerful space-faring empire.
I know of no other reactors that have such deep conversations about the films afterwards. Interesting stuff. Can't wait for more of your MCU journey! It's SO good. Love you guys, and the insights you both had to talk about the families, being flawed, expression difficulties, understanding coming with being older. Agree first movie more fun, this one hits so much harder because it goes into the depths.
The reason Groot went from baby to teenager so fast is he was right down at Ego's original core. Like all plants, he collects energy from his surrounding. So he picked up some Celestial energy that made him grow up quickly and develop some new features. Celestials are among the most powerful beings in the Marvel universe. Knowhere is the severed head of a former Celestial, and Ego is the second one we have met. Later we find out a new Celestial is growing on Earth, and that may explain why so many Infinity Stones are connected to Earth (Space, Mind, and Time stones, 3 of 6) and why Peter is the only one of Ego's children to carry the Celestial gene.

That's the etymology, but the WORD 'ego' as is commonly understood comes from Sigmund Freud, who used it to describe the self-aware portion of the human mind, along with the Id and the Superego. It was this understanding from which Stan Lee drew inspiration for the character.

Just a little detail that might help clarify something you were wondering/discussing about Ego: in the comics, he is officially referred to as "Ego the Living Planet".
Hey guys. Just thought I would bring up and mention. The characters in the first credit scene led by Stallone were actually the original Guardians of the Galaxy from the comics. The team we know as the MCU version of the Guardians was actually I believe the second or third, more popular, iteration of the team. Just another amazing little easter egg from the mind of the mad lad that is James Gunn. Lol
Theme for this movie is about families by blood and by choice. Also it is never too late to make amends. And if someone is so toxic to your life, cut them out of yours no matter who they are. (maybe don't blow them up unless absolutely,100% you don't have a choice.) I'm glad Nebula, Karen Gillan, has shifted from a villain to . . not being one. She is a fun actor. Kind of a waste of her talents being bad.
I laughed a lot when Rocket said that him stealing the batteries was "drax fault". Even someone like Drax, who lacks common sense, could tell stealing the batteries was suicide.
1:10:50 Except Ego said he could *not* have given everything up to stay with Peter's mother or live on Earth. Earlier, he claimed he as to return this body to the planet.
Director James Gunn is phenomenal. He brings another awesome soundtrack and "team of lovable losers" vibe to DC's _THE Suicide Squad,_ which I wholeheartedly recommend. (It's not necessary to watch the previous film.)
The literal meaning of the word 'ego' just means 'consciousness' - the current popular usage has kind of obscured that slightly, but that's literally what he was to begin with, a lone consciousness floating through the cosmos. When there's just you and the universe for so long, it's not that weird of a conclusion to reach that your purpose is to make the universe you too. Oh right, a few specks of life have appeared, that's kind of interesting... ok, back to figuring out how to absorb everything ever! As for being evil - I don't think he was, he just had no frame of reference with which to place value on other intelligent life. He's not the product of evolution, and so has no imperitive to protect or not harm his next generation and so thought nothing of 'disposing' of them (as he might see it) when they turned out to be 'failures'. I would characterise him as pure, unadulterated neutrality, at least when he's in his natural form.
I don't believe Ego's actually a Celestial He's an immensely powerful being, and the only beings he's heard of that are said to be as powerful as he is are Celestials. So of course he must be a Celestial, right? Plus, his name's Ego. Of course he's going to assume he's a God
Don't knowing the reference to David Haselhoff's talking car and crimefighting broke my early millenials heart ;-) Watch Knight Rider ... two or three episodes, that's enough to know what it's all about. And Mary Poppins ... absolutely Mary Poppins!
This is in my opinion the last great James Gunn movie. He was made for marvel and not DC comics. They should have let Zach Snyder finish his story first before rebooting. Snyderverse stuff aside. This is James Gunn at his absolute funniest and greatest. Wish I could say the same for the 3rd GOTG film

I freakin always cry on this one 😭
I don't believe Ego's actually a Celestial
He's an immensely powerful being, and the only beings he's heard of that are said to be as powerful as he is are Celestials. So of course he must be a Celestial, right?
Plus, his name's Ego. Of course he's going to assume he's a God
Yeah, we've seen Celestials, they don't look like that. At his largest, he looked like a big red angry baby planet...definitely "small g" energy.
technically he is a celestial
If u think this is a tear jerker, just wait for GOTG3
Wait..is your dog named Boba?
One of my dogs is Boba Pett. And then there's General Hux, Fennic Shand, and Princess Sleia.
Those are amazing! Boba Pett is incredible
Don't knowing the reference to David Haselhoff's talking car and crimefighting broke my early millenials heart ;-)
Watch Knight Rider ... two or three episodes, that's enough to know what it's all about. And Mary Poppins ... absolutely Mary Poppins!
The Alien People that Stan Lee was talking to are called the Watchers
That is no random Duck that escaped. That is "Howard the Duck." You must watch that movie together.
As wise men once said... WATCH OUT HERE COMES MY ARROW, IT FLIES SUPER FAST, AND KILLS EVERYONE
Wow if only the reactors knew who David Hasselhoff was it could have eased the tragic ending for them.
Can’t wait for Thor Ragnarok
This is in my opinion the last great James Gunn movie. He was made for marvel and not DC comics. They should have let Zach Snyder finish his story first before rebooting. Snyderverse stuff aside. This is James Gunn at his absolute funniest and greatest. Wish I could say the same for the 3rd GOTG film
Please please make sure you watch the Guardians of the Galaxy xmas special before watch GOTG 3 as part of 3's plot is in the Xmas special.
Fun fact: Yandu is the original leader of The Guardians of The Galaxy.

Love your reactions, you two!! WARNING: Please make sure you watch the GOTG Christmas Special AFTER watching Avengers: Endgame and before watching GOTG Volume 3!! And maybe watch Footloose some day before you see them, whether you react to it or not.
