    Best debris hut video I've seen. . Great idea on the pit for the hot rocks. First time I see that. Also that door is genius.

    no need for a bug head net in this shelter because its enclosed. If I was sleeping a jungle type shelter it would be nice to have one. Smudging with help with ticks but your best bet to get away from ticks is to build a shelter off the ground!

  • @sigma3survivalschool
    @sigma3survivalschool  12 лет назад

    you don't need ventalation with just hot rocks, but there are air holes around the door unless you work really hard to stuff it shut. If something was burning it would need ventilation but this doesn't

    Not ofter are there a couple feet of snow if your in thick wilderness though because of the tree canopy. And if the tree canopy isn't there, the debris likely won't be either.

    this may seem like a dumb question but........how do you get the hot rocks to your pit inside your hut? Roll them with sticks?? Love the videos by the way!

    Built properly, with 2 feet of debris on top, the debris shelter is an excellent wet weather shelter, especially with the internal rock pit.

    say it is very wet, like here in Washington, a lot of evergreens, the ground is usually always wet even if it hasn't rained in weeks, what could you use to keep you dry throughout the night? and is this easy to build say if you got hurt? and is it time consuming?

      +Shaun Keefe Once you dial it in a debris hut takes about the same time to build as a fire dependent shelter but it is much more efficient.

    • @motorcyclelad
      @motorcyclelad 8 лет назад

      +Shaun Keefe six times as long?

  • @sigma3survivalschool
    @sigma3survivalschool  12 лет назад

    @mogges1 Well if you do that you can't have a debris bed. Its a major pain in the ass to dig the holes every single night if you even can in smaller debris huts, not a whole lot of space to move around. Rocks are very difficult to get to the right temp and when you bury them you may have to wait for it to cool off. I prefer this method for when I have no shelter. The pit is the ultimate in convenience!

    My only comment is, "what about Leave No Trace". Cutting live trees doesn't count. However, in a survival mode, you use what ever you can.

  • @sigma3survivalschool

    no you would start with a thick layer of boughs instead and then cover it with lots of snow as an insulator.

    Don't really believe in leave no trace unless I'm being tracked. I prefer to build camps that people can use permanently. Definitely leave no trash or human waste but I think it is great to build camps

    Do you need to smoke the leaves out for your "mattress" if not how do you get the bugs out?

  • @TiaraTheTerrible

    Wow when I was building my debris shelter I didn't even realize that I was instinctively building it so the door would be facing the rising sun...then again it was early morning so it was probably more common sense than instinct.

    • @dalbyonemanband
      @dalbyonemanband 6 лет назад

      When its cold, snakes will be in hibernation. Otherwise you wouldn't need this type of shelter in warm weather.

  • @BellefontePerson
    @BellefontePerson 9 лет назад

    Last year we had that "arctic vortex" and it got really cold. Are you saying that if the temperature is -5 F with a wind blowing, that hot rocks in the pit will keep me warm all night?

    • @primitiveskills
      @primitiveskills 8 лет назад

      +BellefontePerson Yes. While the masses of chairborne rangers would disagree, try it. You would be surprised at the efficiency and comfort provided by either a hot rock or a hot coal bed.

    Heating rocks is a dangerous thing. You have to be aware that some rocks have water trapped inside them and will explode like hand grenades when heated. Stay well away from where the rocks are being heated. Add plenty of fuel to the fire so you don't have to go near it again to add more. Hot rocks work great, but you need to be careful and understand the hazard involved. Once the fire has burned down, the rocks that will explode will have done so and it's safe to approach again. After heating them once, they will be safe to reheat again without fear of them exploding. Also be aware that nylon and other synthetic will melt or even flame if they touch hot rocks. Wool blankets covering your synthetic will protect them as wool won't flame and it's a good heat insulator. Dragging hot rocks on a wool blanket is a good way to move them to your hut if you don't have heavy non synthetic gloves or mittens. Use a stick to roll them out of the coals and onto the blanket.

      you can easily make a stick or bough "sled" to roll the rocks onto and move them with it.

      Just dont get rocks from a creek bed or any thats been submerged in water.

    It fills up with smoke very thickly if done properly. Still need to dress properly when sleeping in one, anyway.

    so how far or how do you get the stick in the ground because I didn't see a single support for the main stick that holds everything I plan on trying these different kinds of shelters you have on your channel I think I might try this one and I don't want to be smothered in my sleep I don't care if people say it's a peaceful sleep, yolo and I intend on living a good while =D

  • @MultiRusty111
    @MultiRusty111 11 лет назад

    I suppose you better have a good pair of gloves to carry the hot rocks into the shelter.

  • @luisoliveira7265

    i can't believe it! you guys dig a hole to set a camp. if the rain comes all the shit will be flood. the room is so small,hard to sleep in that place,unless you're a dwarf.

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  9 лет назад

      luis oliveira the hole has a roof over it lol. Does your basement fill up when it rains. And this is a very warm shelter. look at our other large survival shelters if you don't like this one. The larger the shelter, the more the work.

      Sigma 3 Survival School it might if a stream runs directly through, but I guess proper placement or a surrounding channel dug out might fix that.

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  10 лет назад +1

      ***** this is more of a winter shelter sir. I don't use it in summer or spring. But you can treat your clothing with permethrine. And tuck your pants into your boots, and your shirt into your pants and you can sleep on anything and not get bite. Its like bug armor for you ;) hope that clarifies things sir

    • @DamnitRoman
      @DamnitRoman 10 лет назад

      Sigma 3 Survival School When you are making a shelter and want to keep warm like in the winter with a fire burning inside, how do you keep good ventilation? Like if there was no ventilation you would be smoked out, but if there a was a hole you would let the heat out.. so how exactly do you do that?

    • @sigma3survivalschool
      @sigma3survivalschool  10 лет назад

      ***** well in this shelter there is no fire. only hot rocks. heat the rocks in fire right outside shelter and put them in pit inside shelter. If I wanted a fire to heat me instead of rocks. I would build a different shelter, such as a lean to or wickiup. Or double lean too depending on how long I'm staying there.
