I have a 2014 Epiphone Les Paul Studio in wine red I bought used a few years ago. One of the most dependable guitars I have. Frets and finish are great.
I got one last week, had no idea it had the coil split feature from watching this video. I was considering changing the pickups to the EMG Het Set, but have changed my mind since I found this out. Awesome and informative video!
When I was a lot younger when you bought a low price guitar they were pretty bad compared to the nice brands. But today due to modern manufacturing techniques there are so many fantastic very good quality instruments that are very affordable and are a real match for the premier brands that is a fact as many you tube reviews demonstrate and the playability and tonal sound quality are great. I think this Epi is very good all round. I have Gibson Fender PRS and Epiphone in my collection and the Epi is as good and super to play.
I was going back and forth on the white and Smokehouse burst. But they were out of stock on the white at the time so I went with the Smokehouse burst and glad because it's a beautiful looking guitar IMO!
I bought the smokehouse burst at GC a week ago for $449. I didn’t really take a good look at it till I got home. The deciding factor being the reduced price. But I’m happy to say that I have fallen in love with my Epi LP and the smokehouse burst is fantasticly beautiful. I love it! Im going to wait to try it out on different amps since all I have right now is the orange 12. I have a fender champ 12 that needs a new vacuum tube. One is on the way in the mail right now. I've been told that the quality of Epiphone Les Pauls are on par with Gibson and that the only reason you would want the same model from Gibson is for investment reasons. Don't know if it's true but your description of the specifications makes it seem so.
Why I have a 2019 Epiphone exclusive deluxe limited Run g400 Sg Pro with CTS Electronics Graph Tech I bought from Reverb last March for $650 so yes some Epiphones hold value and will rise in value..
Question: TImestamp 12:00 - #3 reason... You mention that the Epiphone weighs about 1Lbs more than the Gibson.... However on the Epiphone website it says the Epiphone has the "Weight Relief: Ultra Modern"., identical to how it is listed on the Gibson website. I would assume if both are listed as Ultra Modern they would weight the same? I could be wrong but just wanted to check.
Excellent review! I’ve been watching a ton of reviews on the new Epiphone line as I’m picking one up to be a studio workhorse. I wanted to pick your brain on which you’d feel is the more versatile and best value guitar. I’m deciding between the Epiphone LP Studio and Epiphone LP Special. Lmk your thoughts when it’s convenient for you. Thanks!
The primary difference here will be P90s vs humbuckers. Either is a great choice, truth is if you had both it would be the ultimate in studio versatility! To approximate the versatility of both, you could look at a model with coil split capabilities like the Les Paul Modern, which is a great value with ebony fretboard too. If you're trying to stay under $500 and could only choose one, I would personally choose the Les Paul Studio. Thanks for watching, here's the Modern: www.zzounds.com/a--3979398/item--EPIEILM?siid=276817
@@PlayandTradeGuitars yes I’m going with the studio in wine red! It’s the more versatile for me with the split coils and love the premium grover tuners that come along with it. Thanks for your response!

@PlayandTradeGuitars It popped up on my screen right after I sent the question. I love my new Gibson. But the bargain hunter in me is cringing, The EPIPHONE Studio in the Alpine White or the Wine Red were both stunning and would have been more than sufficient for me. And saved me $1000. Semi sigh. I’ve definitely found that the coil split in Epiphones makes a more drastic difference than the coil tap in the Gibsons. The tap in my Les Paul Classic doesn’t seem to change the tone much at all, and just introduces single coil hum, but in my Epi 335 you can tell it’s actually only using one of the coils.
Coil split and coil tap are not the same thing. One is splitting off one pickup, and the other is jumping in at the middle. Humbuckers are split, and single coils are tapped.
@@BOBANDVEG It depends. If you are driving a single coil, with a capacitor made for humbuckers, you are over driving it, if anything. But it really depends on how it's wired. There is a volume change, in pretty much every set up. It can be really annoying, if you are swapping mid-song.
I really don't see the point of buying this guitar. It's $499 which it's fine for that price but if you're going to spend $500 anyway you might as well wait a bit and save an extra $220 to buy the white Epiphone Les Paul custom. You'd get the pro bucker pickups which sounded way better than these ones, and you'd get a legit ebony fretboard. You'd also get CTS pots. It's just a much better sounding guitar for $220 more
I have lost count I have about dozen Epiphone Les Paul's . They are all different . Some play better than others their sound varies and their weights are between 8-11 lbs. Do not know if I will ever get a Gibson I am an Epiphone fan . The only thing they is they will not gain in value like a Gibson but for me that is ok .
Bought one when Guitar Center was having their "Guitar-A-Thon" last Spring in Worn Wine Red. Very pleased. Actually, it's a Pro Trade. 4. Really like it though.
Unfortunately, the cavity routs and the pickup cavities are done horribly. I mean even Gibson uses a CNC. Love the Alpine White flavor though, best studio color in my opinion. Sounds great too.
Did you notice the Pau Ferro fretboard making your fingers black? I've heard of that happening on the DC. Nice review and playing, as always. Excellent camera work, Zach!
Chinese Epiphones have impressive finishes, but in my experience they almost always have fret issues. If you go over the fretboard with a fret rocker there's a good chance you're going to find high frets in more than one area. It was less of a problem when they were made in Korea and Indonesia.
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 Wow, you actually think the average Epiphone is made by an American luthier? Gibson owning the factory and having a handful of Americans on site doesn't change the fact that they are made in China by Chinese workers. They roll out over 700 guitars a day. Also. your claim that Gibsons are made by "American and Mexican workers" shows how misguided you are. Sorry to break it to you but your $500 Epiphone isn't just a Gibson with a Made in China sticker.
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 If anyone is a fanboy it's you and the delusion that guitars in China aren't Chinese because Gibson owns the factory and has some Americans onsite to supervise operations. @@BlueberryStinkFinger62 If anyone is a fanboy it's the person who argues that guitars made in China aren't Chinese because Gibson owns the factory and has some Americans onsite to run operations. The whole point of making guitars in China is cheap labor and materials.
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 BTW an American who happens to be of "latino" or "Mexican" heritage and works at Gibson, is not the same as a Chinese person in a factory located in China.
poly is better then nitro because nitro ages way faster and worst then poly some reason know everyone likes the aged look but in the holding up longer lasting longer more durable better product go with poly everytime.
Just a bit of advice for guys who want a Gibson who have never had a Gibson. Don’t go for an in between guitar like Epiphone just because it’s cheaper. You’ll end up regretting it and will start modifying it to make it closer to what you initially wanted. You’re better off checking the used market and getting what you actually want.
My gibson explorer is not well made, needed a fret dress straight out of the box, my epiphone les paul seems fine, i normally buy the best but its not that simple here. My epiphone came with seymour duncan pickups too
This is true, I went in to GC yesterday, and was looking to buy an Epiphone LP, walked out with the Gibson, because I have always wanted one! glad I did! great guitar!
No that bit where it just halved the volume with the split is not really halving the volume….blah blah blah….seriously you could be a politician with that BS
Yea, I have never once heard that Epi and Gibson do a different type of coil split. The only ones I have ever seen done differently is ones with parallel wiring, I think he has some bad info.
I have two vintage EPIPHONE LES PAULS MINT AND THEY FEEL AND PLAY GREAT. IF I OR MOST PLAYERS TESTED BLIND FOLDED THEY COULDT TELL . ON THE TRUSS ROD COVER I BELIEVE BOTH SAY Gibson.
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 Epiphone better than Gibson 😂😂😂 Try and convince the millions of Gibson Les Paul professional guitar players that Epiphone is the better guitar. Yes, better for beginners. They are cheaper for a reason. Leave Gibson to the pros 👍
Hey, i cant even watch this. This gibson will be way better. Epiphone les pauls are like toys in comparison. Do you want to bike to work or drive a Mercedes? It takes a lot of work to find a good epiphone, but not much work to find a good gibson. Thanks, tony
Give the new 2020+ Epi's a try. My 2016 Epi was a toy compared to my 2020 Epi of the same model. The new line is really good. My 2018 Gibson was a such QC nightmare.
I found that Epiphone sucks, I just bought a gibson les paul studio limited-edition in black cherry burst and is blowing every epiphone outta the water rn I've never had any epiphone stay in tune for shit, but this gibson is hard to get out of tune even bare bones stock, I'm a gibson guy not an epiphone guy, buy a real les paul and not a cheap china made knock off

@@martyshwaartz971 that’s exactly what it is. An option. If you don’t want to use it, don’t pull up on the knobs
@@SoundlabStudios63 I love pulling on my knob ... I do it so much it keeps me from other responsibilities.
That Epiphone looks Sweet in white. Definitely going to give it a try 😀
smooth sound I like it!
Found one today, traded some pedals and was able to take one home for like 275$
i just bought one for 200. how has yours held up?
I have this in this color love it! 🎼🎸🎶
I know this is two years old now, but everywhere I look, the nut width is over 1.69 inches
How heavy is this compared to a Gibson? Always the downside for me. If this is lighter, then that’s awesome.
Very good Tommy Tayer machine
I really don't see the point of buying this guitar. It's $499 which it's fine for that price but if you're going to spend $500 anyway you might as well wait a bit and save an extra $220 to buy the white Epiphone Les Paul custom.
You'd get the pro bucker pickups which sounded way better than these ones, and you'd get a legit ebony fretboard. You'd also get CTS pots. It's just a much better sounding guitar for $220 more
This one has the pro bucker pickups
@@DanielMedina-xb7pf the studio one from this video ?
I have lost count I have about dozen Epiphone Les Paul's . They are all different . Some play better than others their sound varies and their weights are between 8-11 lbs. Do not know if I will ever get a Gibson I am an Epiphone fan . The only thing they is they will not gain in value like a Gibson but for me that is ok .
Yes it's better
Bought one when Guitar Center was having their "Guitar-A-Thon" last Spring in Worn Wine Red. Very pleased. Actually, it's a Pro Trade. 4. Really like it though.
Actually I forgot to mention, since I got it on sale the price for the Pro Traditional IV was $399. I could not pass that deal up.
That happened to me. Turned out to be the strings they put on em.
Unlike the Gibson, you just lose so much volume with the coil split.
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 How many of the 700+ guitars they roll out per day does your cousin and "them American luthiers" make? LOL
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 If anyone is a fanboy it's you and the delusion that guitars in China aren't Chinese because Gibson owns the factory and has some Americans onsite to supervise operations. Your argument is that you know and I don't and that makes me a Gibson fanboy LOL My foot isn't in my mouth but yours is shoved firmly up your backside.
'Your guitar needs to breathe' = Marketing an inferior coating. Making it smell of vanilla = ditto.
ANyone notice the KILLER Bass track? :)
I really like that Epiphone
What? An Epiphone that doesn’t need a fret job? Amazing.
gibsob no white les paul studio right..? only epiphone got white studio, or second hand, somesay gibson 90s lp studio quite a nice guitar.
oh I wish
I actually want an Epiphone. Gibson’s QC has really gone down hill. And I prefer my guitar neck not to break :-p
I just bought the Gibson, I was going to get the epi, but There are quality differences. the epi is not bad though! @@kennethm.380
my Gibson is way better than my Epiphone though it frets had to be polished. But it has better feel and tone.
Las guitarras epiphone son buenas pero jamás mejores como una Gibson
no one ever wins !
No that bit where it just halved the volume with the split is not really halving the volume….blah blah blah….seriously you could be a politician with that BS
Yea, I have never once heard that Epi and Gibson do a different type of coil split. The only ones I have ever seen done differently is ones with parallel wiring, I think he has some bad info.
never played an epiphone I liked.
🤘
Epiphone are good guitar
But it's not gibson
@@BlueberryStinkFinger62 I have epiphone japan
And gibson
The gibson is better
The epiphone is amazing
But not gibson
@ajcydnisargetti9500 exactly what about them are better?
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Epiphone better than LesPaul? Ummmm……No. Gibson being worth the bloated cost of their name on the headstock? Nope😊
Most Epiphone pickups are trash. Man these pickups are weak
I have a epiphone les paul and it stays in a closet
I found that Epiphone sucks, I just bought a gibson les paul studio limited-edition in black cherry burst and is blowing every epiphone outta the water rn I've never had any epiphone stay in tune for shit, but this gibson is hard to get out of tune even bare bones stock, I'm a gibson guy not an epiphone guy, buy a real les paul and not a cheap china made knock off
The best LP style guitars are not Gibsons. It's just a fact.
No that's your opinion lol
@@chriswebb383 You are a little slow, huh? 😂😂🤣🤣
epiphone 1961 les paul (SG) standard lol with the gibson pick ups!
Dont get why Epiphone are making these when their standard is only very slightly more expensive
