St. Elmo's Fire occurs when the atmosphere becomes charged and an electrical potential strong enough to cause a discharge (plasma) is created between an object and the air around it. This can happen to an aircraft flying through heavily charged skies. St. Elmo’s fire typically looks like a beam of bright blue light coming out from a pointed object. The color results from mainly the nitrogen and oxygen which our atmosphere consists of. The history of St. Elmo’s fire dates back to ancient Greek sailors. Hence, the glow was named after St. Erasmus, who is the patron saint for sailors.
Pilots often get to see static discharges dancing on their windscreens. As a passenger, you might be concerned but it’s completely harmless. Unfortunately as a passenger very rarely you will be able to sight this beautiful phenomenon.

how are you able to navigate under such conditions?...And doesn't the systems fail or temporarily shut down if it strikes the aircraft?
