I always found it odd. I think they pitched the "strong anti-drug message" and got it in that way. Although it's not a strong message, just lunacy and tongue-in-cheek insanity.
It was an odd port, yeah. Rare developed it, and to be fair, for NES standards it's not the worst, it just begs the question why it was on NES at all, since the Genesis was already out by its release.
@@jefflavenz7285 NES was still DOMINATING until Sonic the Hedgehog and the Super NES. Many NES kids never even heard of Genesis when NARC landed. I sure hadn’t.
I remember seeing ads for it in game pro back in the day. But my memory is failing me. Were the ads for the NES version? It must have been like 1993 or do when I was subscribed to game pro.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how in both versions, the dogs just revert to puppies. Even in the ultraviolent world of narc, the dogs don't have to die.
I loved playing NARC on the Midway Arcade Treasures collection, the ultimate Anti Drug game and I found super fun and violent, it is quite interesting to see with the NES version that they were willing to go for a one to one arcade to console release but had to censor some stuff in the end that's not surprising considering it was Nintendo back in the day, still the NES version is quite the collector's item nowadays apparently.
I remember owning this game as a kid and only picking it up based on the cover/box art alone. XD I thought it was alright! Not too shabby of a game, imo, didn't realize it was a port of anything until recently.
I love how you uploaded this as soon as I started listening to NARC's ost again. Sick video as always dude, it's cool to see how the censorship was done!
Please do a video on exactly how you dump all your various games.. That would be really cool for folks that have protos and whatnot, who might not be comfortable sending them off for someone else to do. 👍
Thanks for the video about yet another curio. If you'll pardon a nitpick, that's stripboard that's attached not a breadboard, which is solderless. Either way, neat find.
Dumb question: is there a debug code for that prototype? Considering the game's infamous difficulty, and all the levels from the arcade version being in the final release, I figure I might as well ask.
Ohh wow I k 😅😅ed I'm dual encoding for the tiles and colors didn't they? That game packed a lot of graffix for a single cartridge to handle like that. When I was editting tiles and mechanics for Bionic commando I hadda. Be mindful of the same color / tile sharing memory saving process hehh
Hi, where can I find the uncensored ROM of NARC? You mentioned that you posted a link for it, but where is it? Thanks for your time and excellent video.
Was N.A.R.C. the game that would have you play based on time and energy, meaning even if your character isn't losing energy from an enemy you still lose energy just being alive and taking time? Arcade version I mean
Nice. It's also worth mentioning in the final build of the game, the women you had to rescue from Kinky Pinky were completely omitted. Of course the NES port is a classic albeit less dynamic than the Arcade original, and it's a great commentary that it displays an anti-drug message which BTW the game was endorsed by Just Say No International under the authority of Nancy Reagan.
Yup, those sure are some good links that you put up to the game in here. Oh... what do you mean there's no actual links to it? Huh. I guess that would just make you a liar then, huh? :)
Cigar... Riiight. I know a blunt when I see one. I appreciate the news because I've been playing the arcade version and I thought the NES version was hot garbage (I barely remember it from my happy childhood.) It will be neat playing the uncensored version and (hopefully) proving my younger self wrong!
Great video, I used to love this game as a kid. I'd be more inclined to call it a "blunt" instead of a "cigar" but understandably perhaps you are not the type who pays much attention to drug culture.
I know this is mostly a joke but i dont get what is the point when everyone points(!) out those things when it comes to nintendo censorship. The smoke references are gone but the red light district stay there and "they think one thing is ok, the other not". What is the point? They should take everything out? They should left everything?
I'm surprised to find out NARC was on the NES in the first place

It was the first version i played it. Thought it was always the original
Wow, pretty cool find! I had the NARC HI-SCORE in Nintendo Power for one month. True story.
What number?
What number?

woah I heard this one was coming! had no idea they started with a direct port and cut out as necessary... neat to see this uncut version of it!
I just love the mystery and rare feeling if these prototype games! 🎉
Awesome find. Good video as always Tony.

Hmm a gun that can age regress a dog. Imagine that on the farm. Old yellers too old to hunt. Take him out back. Come back with Young Yeller.
Great video as always! Love to see the behind the scenes evolution of games before release.
Loved the NES version growing up, and as a kid it took me and my brother to beat this one, the final boss Mr. Bigg is just stupidity hard!!
My mom rented this for me in 90' i ❤ed it!!! Played it faithfully!!!! My favorite game of all time. 😊
Please do a video on exactly how you dump all your various games.. That would be really cool for folks that have protos and whatnot, who might not be comfortable sending them off for someone else to do. 👍
I bought the original NES cart as a kid. I still have it. It was just ok. Didn’t quite scratch the itch of the original arcade
That's pretty much how I felt when I played it.
to be fair it was censored, now if we had this uncensored build growing up it would've been better received.
Thanks for the video about yet another curio. If you'll pardon a nitpick, that's stripboard that's attached not a breadboard, which is solderless. Either way, neat find.
Good to know! Thanks! 😀
The final boss in the arcade is some of the wildest shit you can see!
Another great find!
Master Chief: "Did anyone else make it?..."
Cortana: "Just Dustin Echoes."
I didn't even know there was a port of that for the NES
I really appreciate you H4G!
It's cool to see an official version of this, but some one made a romhack years ago called Narc Uncut that fixes all these issues.
Gaming's come a long way, from this in 1988 to now playing Spiderman Remastered with ray tracing maxed out at 4K on an oled tv.
No shit.
Weird example to compare it, but ok.
yea, it's so weird how fast things are evolving these years.
Still something so enjoyable about the simplicity of those old 8 bit games though.
@@doyalg For sure.
That is really neat. One of my favorite arcade games.
I was surprised that it was as faithful of a port.
Dumb question: is there a debug code for that prototype? Considering the game's infamous difficulty, and all the levels from the arcade version being in the final release, I figure I might as well ask.
Hone it in .... dang that's Why I'm subbed. Blessings from Texas

Programmed by Rare. Dang, now I wish they'd done a SNES version too.
I just played it and the hitboxes are atrocious. I made it as far as the SAFE sign by the subway train. No idea what to do from there.
We need a new version of this Narcotics based game.
Ocean software published the 8bit home computer versions on the likes of the C64 and they were uncensored if I remember correctly
wouldn't mind knowing the purpose of that breadboard that was wired onto the cart
actually really cool
Thank you

This is awesome
I always like theses videos prototypes games are my favorite vidoesst

had a copy.. didn't know it was Rare.
NOOOO FUCKING WAY YES
Hilarious sense of comedy
Is there an emulated version of this uncensored narc...?
I like that uncencored is kwak and censored is Krak
This is amazing! Is this a finished build?
Nice. It's also worth mentioning in the final build of the game, the women you had to rescue from Kinky Pinky were completely omitted. Very nice
Good short vid!
Swivel stools are fun!
LMAO censor crews were out of control!
Awesome!
Is this "prototype" just the full retail game minus the censorship, or are there other changes since this build worth noting?
Man, i wanna try k.w.a.k. if it means i get to transform into a dumpster man.
That'd be a pretty unlikely coincidence if they weren't the same Eugene.. I mean that name isn't very common afaik
Yup, those sure are some good links that you put up to the game in here.

lotta boyz got narc

I'd like to pretend this was for Eugene Mirman.
...All you ever talk about is dragons and gold. :(

where is the link ??? ok NM they got shutdown
THEY BECOME HAAAAAAAAAAAAARD
Sure do, sure do
You never know maybe the N means narc 🙃

"cigar"
_I was the four hundred and twentieth like._
😂✌️
Its crazy how accurately it predicted modern day American city's. Just drug addicts throwing used needles at you. 😂
