  • here's how i am working on becoming a certified secondary teacher in Texas through an alternative certification program: Texas Teachers of Tomorrow. I got my degree in 2018 in journalism and worked as a reporter until 2019. After doing some soul searching (haha) i decided to pursue a career in education. This video details an overview of how the program works and my experience with it.

    I have been considering getting my teaching certification to become an English Teacher. I did my bachelor in Communications and worked as a social media manager for a while and DID NOT enjoy it. I don’t think its a coincidence that I stumbled upon a video from an ex reporter that became an English teacher! SUPER HELPFUL VIDEO! Im definitely going to look more into this.

    Thank you so much for this video. I graduated in December with a bachelor's in Political Science and had always planned on going to law school but I realized this year that teaching is what I have real passion for - particularly English as I have always had a love for literature and writing. It has been such a draining experience realizing that I made the wrong decision for my undergraduate careeer and it gives me so much hope to hear your story. I've been in various types of jobs since graduating, and this seems like the perfect fit at this time in my life. I used to have a fear of public speaking so I didn't think I would ever be able to teach a class. I worked through my public speaking skills and now I'm working towards getting an alt cert. I am in the same boat as you I got hired without being fully credentialed for the fall. I am from California and the process of becoming a teacher is somewhat similar to Texas. I have a degree in Music Education so education was my emphasis in college but that doesn't mean the process was easier. During my undergrad, we are not able to do student teaching I had to wait until I got my degree to start which sucks! So what we have to do is enroll in a credential program whether it's at a university or online and that can take up to a year or two depending on your situation. Just like you, I had to take tests in my content area. They were 3 test that cost $100. Luckily where I live many school districts will hire teachers who aren't fully credentialed but demonstrate that they are enrolled in a program. And that is how I got hired. So I will have to be taking classes while teaching and will be provided a mentor teacher like you are. And just like your situation all of this cost a lot of money lol I got offered a position that I couldn't pass so that's why I decided to take this route instead of getting my credential first. Anywho sorry for the long post lol I am excited to see your teaching journey and your upcoming videos!!

    Hello Brianna, Thank you so much for this video. I also want to become an English/ESL teacher in the state of Texas, I also have a Journalism degree lol. My question is Is there another path for becoming a certified teacher where I'm not required to take any sort of content exams? Honestly I have a hard time with tests specially long ones, I don't think I'm capable of sitting and concentrating for 5 hours straight since I have ADHD, so that's why I'm looking for alternatives. Hi! I am currently in the program working on the "required courses" portion. In your video you stated that you just have to finish the projects and the PPR. So my question is, you were able to get hired for the first year with only completing the required course, observations and the content exam? Just trying to get clarification on what steps to take since it is hard to get ahold of texas teachers 😅

    • @byBriannaStone
      @byBriannaStone  3 года назад +2

      I completed all of the required courses before starting teaching, but I believe you can still work on them during your first year.
      Observations of you observing a teacher need to be done before applying to jobs, you do need a certain number of required course hours finished (I believe) and your content exams.
      During your "intern year" you finish projects, take the PPR and receive 5 observations (your field supervisor observing you teaching)
      I hope that was helpful!

  • @pyenme

    Or, how to pay for a certification by doing online modules that take about a year. Those of us who had to be accepted into a teaching program and spent 5 years in classrooms taking education classes sure do appreciate your effort.

    • @pyenme
      @pyenme Год назад

      @@byBriannaStone The point is this - your degree didn't work out for you. Okay. So, the backup plan is teaching. Now you don't even have to go back to a classroom for two years to get education classes. In just a year of online modules and $4500 (or whatever your program costs), you have a certification. Then there are the folks who spent those 4 or 5 years full time in classrooms, getting an education major with practicums and methodology in how to teach - as well as another major in subject area - AND a required minor. Just imagine if a job required your Journalism degree that you worked hard (on campus) to get, but another candidate had an online degree. Should that degree hold the same weight as your degree? I can actually appreciate that you want to teach, but know that people do question the quick fixes online technology has created.

    • @byBriannaStone
      @byBriannaStone  Год назад +1

      @@pyenme the fact of the matter is that there is a lack of teachers and alternative certification is a route for schools to get more teachers and people who have already completed degrees to get certified. I still had to work hard to get my certification and did it while in my first year as a teacher. Sorry you feel like it was an “easy” route but it definitely wasn’t easy. It still took me 5 years to get there and most education majors spend their last year student teaching which is essentially what the “intern year” or alternative certification is. Clearly if there were more people getting education degrees there would not be the need for alternative certification and other programs but there aren’t enough new / teachers who are staying in the profession.

    Hello from Buffalo New York
    I’m looking around right now for information and it seems the specifics of my situation are lost in the search bar.
    I am 23 and I’m currently working in the trades. I have an associates in communications/media and I love the idea of transitioning from my current job to being able to teach, specifically social studies or history, I’m of course expecting to have to go back to school in order to do this and I am more than willing to put all the effort forth.
    How do I best obtain information for my specific circumstances? It seems most people transitioning to teaching already have a much more focused bachelor’s degree.
    Any guidance would be really appreciated :)

    first thank you so much for this informative video. I wanted to ask if at any point you were in contact with an andvisor, i thought i had it all figured out but not to long ago i got a call from an adviser who told me i needed to focus on just taking my content exams and not do the courses as i had started because thats what showed on my =
    " whats next check list:" so im confused on why i would have to take those first before getting my required courses done. i do have a bachelors and i do also see that they approved me to take three content exams already which the advisor had told me were required. she was not very much detailed when i was asking . :[ please get back at me if you do know anything about this

For example: I have a degree in English and Spanish, so I would go for those. But could I do ESL or Social Studies if I can pass the exams?

      It varies a lot based on the area of Texas. I live in the DFW area so the average starting pay is anywhere from $50,000-56,000. Other areas of Texas, teachers might only make in the 30s or 40s
