- Brace yourselves for a tale of epic proportions, an expedition we swore never to repeat-the journey into the heart of the impossible, Nabiyotum Crater. This is where the very concept of roads evaporated, leaving us to move stones by hand to forge a path into the unknown. For 30 kilometers, we were on low-range gears in a relentless battle against the very steep, very slippery and very treacherous terrain.
In the absence of rear and center differential locks, it would have been futile. But there was no turning back. We faced steep slopes, so narrow that we felt like mountain goats, as we ascended the formidable Telekis Volcano in order to clear the Barrier Ranges. The views were nothing short of jaw-dropping, yet trepidation hung in the air despite the scorching heat. The wind roared like a hurricane, whipping sand at night like a relentless sandblaster. Here, everything felt primal, and time itself seemed suspended.
Amidst this raw, untamed wilderness, only a few resilient fisherfolk call it home. Active volcanoes punctuate the horizon, and black lava flows paint a haunting picture. The Barrier Volcano, which erupted in 1921, left behind a thick, unforgiving layer of lava mud.
Our ascent of the 45-50 degree slope of Nabiyotum Crater nearly burst our hearts with the joy of achieving the seemingly impossible. We wandered along a red beach, where crimson sand and pebbles met the jade-hued waters of the Jade Sea.
Yet, adversity was our constant companion. Laser's tire met its match in the form of a sharp lava rock, and we discovered, to our dismay, that we'd forgotten the jack in the Pajero. It was a true test of resourcefulness as we executed an unimaginable tire replacement without any jack, all while perched on a slope.
Surreal sunsets and sunrises painted the sky, leaving us in awe of nature's grandeur. And as we made our way back, one thing was certain: we vowed never to return. This land, where geological forces sculpt new landscapes, where Kenya is still in the making, remains an ethereal realm-a place of extremes, a place where the unimaginable becomes reality.

When night fell after the puncture I started praying for you guys. What an adventure!!
🤣🤣🤣🙏🏻 Imagine we are ready to sleep on the road if that was necessary. But with all lights on full blast, low range gear on, and rear diff lock on, we just descended slowly at a snail pace. Our biggest worry was getting another tire slashed by the rocks. We were not even thinking of the deep, steep valleys on both sides of the road.
The prices for the 80 series just went up after this epic video.

🫡💪 Laser keeps on giving. He only comes and dies at home but not on the trails. There was no road to speak of, the slopes were so steep, with stomach-churning drops on the sides of the trail, and the trail so narrow.. We put her on low range, locked centre and rear diff locks and climbed the slopes and rocks at a snail pace to prevent any bouncing that might be fatal by tipping her over to the side of the slopes..

🙏🏻🙏🏻🤣🤣 Lets talk like Kenyans.. "we are trying".. There is no epic place that is easy to get to. For instance, if you want to see snow, you must be ready to persevere the cold of Mt. Kenya.
Awesome, that incline on the crater was something else
💯💯💯💯 When you get to the middle of the slope, you start feeling nausea and like vomiting due to the heart beating so fast. Plus and worse, the sides of the crater were made of these smooth slabs that were like scales on a fish, and will break of and slide down. The crater is short but thats the only easy thing about it.
Love this! 💪👏 PSA - use the right shoes for rocky climbs or other hikes (hiking boots with good sole grip and strong ankle support) it only takes a second to slip and twist or sprain your foot/ankle and then your awesome trip is ruined..🤕
❤❤ Thank you for this awesome advice! Initially we had no plans to go to this mountain/crater. Hence why we were not prepared as we should have. Getting there was one heck of an adventure, something we would not want to do again soon.

Aye! That trip was the toughest ever! All our hopes were on Laser and its reliability, plus diff locks! We have been many remote places, but none of them beats Nabiyotum. None is remoter. Next time we will take one of those choppers. 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you! She is quite wide-bodied, then add negative offset rims (10Js). So she has good stance. Then the "big" stuff on the roof consist of very light swag and a canvas bag containing small and light stuff. She is stable for a live axle 4x4.

😂😂We were just exhilarated at making it there and back, plus the views, the experience, the landscapes, the remoteness. Adrenaline was not allowing us to feel tired. That one we felt after we got back.

😂😂 If you don't have a LC, with minimum 2 inch lift, MT tires, centre diff lock, REAR DIFF LOCK or at minimum traction control tech, 2 spare tires - we have not even mentioned mechanical condition, DO NOT attempt! The video does not do justice at all to that trip, the terrain, the "road". They were much worse. But the views, the experience 🔥🔥🔥🔥🙌🏼 Now do you have the above?
the climate there has managed to preserve the lava formations such that they look like they just flowed yesterday. Wow!
