Scuba Compressor Engine and Heat

- An update from Patience Camp. The weather suddenly got me thinking about heat on the boat so I started down that path, and also fired up that Chinese 10HP diesel and decided it looked good enough to go ahead and build in the exhaust for it. Today I flew out of snow in Oklahoma to sunshine in Florida. I suppose it's a good idea if I learn something about sailing while waiting too.

"Trickin Pickin" preformed by Doug Waterman
Great to hear the news on the insurance is progressing!
Fantastic news!
The pull starter from a Yanmar L100 will bolt right up and is much higher quality. I got one for $40 on ebay a couple years ago. If it has provisions for electric start it actually works pretty well provided you have the cranking amps needed. I actually converted mine to an actual car battery after I began having issues in sub freezing temps.
A little sailing might bring some peaceful memories before the grand adventure. We’re all excited for you Doug!
I have to say out of all the videos I've watched of this boat - this one really accentuates in all the planning that went into this thing. I hope to step foot on it one day while its in the water!
Had an old powered rotary reel lawn mower when I was a kid that had a rope start that you wrapped the rope around. Always started and no phony spring return. "Another day, more parts" is the mantra for any form of plumbing. Take care and stay well Doug.
I like these scuba compressor channels that do a bit of boat building :-)
Doug, I am a Certified Master Small engine mechanic please do not put cheap oil in the engine just to break it in, use oil that is high in zinc and do not put a load on that new engine you must break it in under NO LOAD if you don't you will cause your engine to burn oil and run a very short life!!!
Ouch! I felt it in my fingers. My Honda TRX500 does the same thing when battery is flat and I forget to pull the crankshaft/piston over TDC before switching the ignition on and pulling the cord. Always makes me swear.
Congratulations Camp Patience, on the insurance business! Get on that muddy river soon.
The asphyxiation station is now ready for service! Sparks and wood I LOVE IT! Congrats on the insurance barrier. Splash next then down the river! Check bridge height along your route BEFORE you step your masts. My brother who was a deck hand on a tow boat made several trips up that river and has concerns about your vessel navigating the locks and especially getting a masted vessel under the bridges. The submarine down river had issues with one of the bridges. Something about clearance for the periscope was the issue.
He will out up the masts after he went down the river. That was the plan anyway :)
Drill on the flywheel while holding the compression release open manually. Get engine to speed then remove drill and let go of compression release. My channel has a video showing me do this with a similar yanmar
If you decide to keep that little engine, mount an electric starter from a riding lawnmower on it. May have to change the flywheel, but a little more flywheel mass would probably do you well for if you engage that clutch if the compressor is under load
Thanks so much for all you teach! Your an inspiring human.. Beautiful Vessel Seeker is!!Well that'll start'er... Again, Thanks for sharing your life with us ✌🏼💗😊❣️
WoooHooo! Grats on the insurance problem breakthrough. Looking forward to the launch!
@SVseeker these small engines usually are easy retrofit for a small 12V motorcycle starter - check if it has a gear ring on the flywheel that a starter could use - meny already have a cutout for fitting a starter right in it
Doug, my dad once made an adaptor out of a socket and bolt to chuck into a 3/8 electric drill to start his mower and trimmer. You already have battery-powered drills so you could do the same thing. He used a 3/8 bolt with a nut through the socket to be able to chuck it up but you could weld the socket onto a bolt or 3/8 hex to make it easier to chuck to a drill.
That’s for when I get old :)
@@SVSeeker Racing go-karts have a nifty little thing for the end of the shaft... the power source auto releases when the engine starts... basically a one way socket.
@@dudleycornman1624 would be ratcheted.
@@SVSeeker put a C in front of old, you have another reason for drill start. Imagine trying to fix the pull start while your fingertips are blue
@@dylanzrim3635 sort of... yea.
Haven’t seen it yet so you might mention it. Always make sure the inlet for the scuba pump is away from smelly things, even with a filter on you could still end up tasting peoples farts while diving.
Love it Doug! Such good news that it looks like you've got the insurance sorted. And always impressed and how you show your work and thinking on Seeker! A pleasure to watch 🙌🙌
16:31 for an update about insurance.
Its been a long road. Glad to see that you will soon be hitting the water!
We are in the water. : )
Doug. The pull start is kicking back because it has no load to resist that action. I realize the reason for the clutch, but the rope pull is probably best if you dont run electric start. That way on any small engine with pull start. Thanks for the videos.
Amazing, you're almost in the water! I can't wait!!!
Nice to see the ship coming alive with the smoke warnings and such
Agree, that was a good book.
Congrats on all the progress and the insurance policy coming together! Have fun sailing in sunny Florida! Looking forward to seeing Seeker splash.
Your patience is inspiring!
Thank you!
Well send some pics from Florida! It's cold up north.
We were hoping to be in Florida by now. RV repairs have slowed us down. Hope you get in the water soon!
If you’re running one engine and another engine has the intake and exhaust valve open on valve overlap you could pump exhaust gases inside the boat if your running the exhaust pipes together. Might a dangerous carbon monoxide situation building up randomly one time if an engine stops on valve overlap
No worries Mom. The exhaust were built for that. There is a detector. The room has blowers for vent.
@@SVSeeker oh! That’s good! :)
@@SVSeeker I love your videos! Been watching for years! Always interesting stuff! I learn a lot from your channel too
"I like redundancy". I couldn't tell.😄
I'm just following to find out when this boat will pass me in Little Rock Arkansas. Will shower it with gifts from the old trainbridge pedestrian crossing.
18000 BTUs isn't much.
A webasto can keep a motor able to start in a cold winter but it probably won't make enough heat for a large area.
The fan motors also wear out fairly rapidly so you are right about leaving access, particularly being careful to be able change the electric fan motors without having to unhook the water hoses.
Quite common in cabinets on trucks to keep them from freezing hot water wash pumps etc.
Great news Doug!!! I'm thrilled for ya.....
Let your beard grow Cap'tn Seeker! 👍🤘✌
Miller is my choice too
Hi Doug I found the best way to start those China diesels is pull them up to the compression stroke THEN hit the decompression lever let the recoil retract then rip it I find it doesn’t rip the pull cord from your hand
Looked like he was using that procedure by the time the pull start fell apart
Doug , you continue to inspire the way you remain positive. Thank you Warren
I really don't have patience, visited 4 months ago, re-visit in April see if there is any progress in getting the boat floated.
That’s to bad. Life is much more fun with patience.
Yahoo. Patience works. 👍
Awesome news to hear about the insurance...mean.. made my day..cheers
Get a parakeet. If there are any carbon monoxide issues to be imagined with the diesel heater, I would be very prepared to look for them. I don't imagine that it would play very well with other devices were they to share an exhaust outlet. If the length of the exhaust exceeds the factory supplied tubing, there may also be flow issues.
This is based on my general impression from seeing other installations.
If I don't finish that exhaust pipe, I'll need a whole flock.
Not sure if its been stated. But I've used a cordless drill to start lawnmowers and a diesel generator. Electric start without being electric start.
Thank you Doug!
I can’t believe you didn’t start this video with the good news about the insurance! Awesome! Woohoo!!!
Fantastic news.
i thinking y'all did good job designing the boat. redundancy and modularity
Always awesome videos and I very much like how you are picking up the trash on your walks
Start it with a socket on an impact driver. Works great.
not on a diesel
Kiitos kanavasta olen seurannut alusta saakka mielenkiinnolla ja jatkan innolla. Terveiset suomesta..
You are such a positive, constructive guy Doug. It warms my heart
Thanks
It must of felt like southern Alaska with the wind and snow over the weekend 🤔.
Roald Amundsen lived just a few km from where i grew up. have a pict with my grate grandmother and him.
Do you sleep with your window open in the winter too? : )
Amundsen is my hero too. Sailed to the Arctic in 90. Read all about him before hand.
See if you have an impact or drill that is powerful enough to turn the engine over. Then you can just have a permanent 19mm or 3/4" bolt welded to the front of the pull start flywheel.
You are much better just using a drill or motor to rotate to start. The impact motion is very bad on the driven unit.
They aint that hard to start once u work out the flywheel effect.. thats why it has one..
Well its been a little exercise in patience for yah but hey your almost there! glad to hear the good news on the insurance, good stuff.
Great news on the insurance from camp patience, I hope you can rope in a few folk to only video the launch as I guess you will be a trifle busy with other "sailing" things on the day. You don't need good luck, you just need to work like you do but I wish you it anyway.
This may be a dumb idea but why not run that scuba compressor or the main motor via hydrolic and the electric clutch ?
We could but I don’t want the hours or fuel cost for running the main engine.
YOU ARE AN INSPIRATION BUDDY. No limit to what we can do with the will. Thank You very much for all the videos and the amazing work and patience !!!
Thanks. And yes. Patience and stubbornness is just about all I got. It's not a bad combination when your not so smart. : )
I don't have a couch. I sit in a reclining arm chair... I do get out of it from time to time. My biggest problem with stick welding is putting it down once I've picked it up though....
Good work here. Always a joy to route pipes in a boat... there's never enough room to make it easy.
Depending on the cost of the engine; I'd forgo the 20 hour break in and just put it to use.
Judging by the quality of the pull-start mechanism, it wasn't the most expensive one in the store......
I have seen for and against the practice. There was a video on here where they took two motorcycles and broke one in gently and the other with frequent full throttle use. Then tore them down and inspected parts. No difference was observed.
I think ultimately all that really matters is if it cools properly. The extra friction heats it up more, which may over heat it at full load for long periods.
@@court2379 I think it's down to better alloys, manufacturing processes and tolerances these days. Back then it was all over the place so they assumed things will grind down on their own until it doesn't attempt to seize anymore.
@@court2379 most motorbikes have water cooled aluminum nickasil bores these days, a world removed from that Chinese yanmar (chanmar?)
Don't miss out on fishing! I know you could make an excellent electric reel to drag a lure with.
You talked about your welder what happened to the prime weld TIG 225x you had to weld the dingie?
with all of the different engines in the same exhaust pipe do you have to worry about exhaust gas reversion though one of the engines that isn't running and thus carbon monoxide?
No, not the way they are branched together. There is actually a small vacuum. And the engine room is vented when an engine is running.
That was a lot of fun to watch!
I have been able to take a welding class in my high school and or really showed me how fun it can be just to fuse to pieces of metal together
Best thing for people with ocd
Shes looking great real great - Fair winds & following seas my friend - Its not the destination > Its the journey that counts .
Excellent update as always Doug. Another beautiful day.
getting the insurance calls for a toast! there now that thats done. an electric starter for that engine would not be terribly expensive Doug. If it were me, Id already have it on there.
I've always broke in a engine the way i intend to use it. Just a couple extra oil changes is the difference. My .02
When getting up in HP, all ways put an electric start on. Ruined the tendons in my hand from one of them buggers kicking back.
I posted a video the other day of an iron furnace i use for my Bigboy 4014 project.
you could use the bus heater for a bunk heater were people sleep, just a idea, or even under floor heat for the engine room.
Yes, but it's way too big for either cabin.
Lost 4 apple trees and a tool shed from heavy snow. Just about cried. But I put on my snow shoes and went for a "walk". It's true. Going on a walk is good for mental health.
I have been thinking about your dingy recovery system at the stern. When you are at sea, the boat will roll and those web straps down to the dingy will “alter “ in length and also operate at an angle to the geometry of the supports.
What do you think??
One thing Seeker will do well is help others in remote places.
I was reading that book The last time I was down helping you. He has a great way of looking at life!
Howdy Kyle. I think so too. It's my second time through it.
Congratulations on getting the insurance!
I powered several compressors with Yanmar diesels. Yours looks like a copy of a Yanmar. I quit using the Yanmar because of parts and reliability issues. I switched to Hatz. They are way more reliable and need fewer parts. Once you've proved the concept of a diesel drive for the compressor, keep Hatz in mind for the replacement engine. I use a centrifugal clutch instead of electric clutch. Enjoy Florida.
Doug I am sure you know, but take extra precaution to make sure that only clean air makes its way into the scuba compressor. Compressed carbon monoxide can be deadly at depth.
I figure we can connect the exhaust to the compressor intake and help boost the pressure. You're worried about that? : )
@@SVSeeker I am by no means trying to be critical. Just keep in mind even a small amount of carbon monoxide can be deadly when compressed. I have a little experience in this area :-)
@@laptoprepairshop Thanks mom.
@SV Seeker you're welcome. Now be a good son and finish your vegetables.
Susan & Tony here, some day we are going to show up for a visit. Really looking forward to your launch. We are sure the time spent was beneficial to the project. You have accomplished much since arriving at the Port, must have been blessed to have this time.
Doug after all in all I support you 100 % and hope nothing ever break down. As I see it your the only one that's going to know how it works and how to fix it. Your friend always, no matter what you think of me! Your the man Doug. Oh I have to remember to send you some what did I make today pictures.
Doug rather than pulse start could you possibly use a drill motor with a socket and would that give enough torque to start ???
weld a bracket on the outside of that pulley or make some kind of cage over it that will let you weld like a 7/8 nut on it then use a cordless impact to start the engine. industrial maint tech. we stay employed by creating chicken salad from you know what. when you get to the gulf of mexico maybe i can make you all some food. those lil millers are awesom. i have one. just dont have the tig whip.
Harbor Frieght ought to sponsor you.
No. I to frequent tell the truth about their tools.
The only time I sit on the couch, is to watch these videos. Then its back out to do try something new!
It would be cool to fab up something so you can use a drill to start that little diesel.
If you have many motors at same pipe, is there a possibility that some exhaustgasses could escape through another motors valves/manifold? It would be kinda cool.
Not from the test we have done so far. We built the junctions so they create an venturi.
Jordan Peterson good stuff. CHINA motors are OK sort of, I think all those pull starters are the same, Junk. Use the rope wind like you did, simple.
But first a walk in the woods.. I thought you had your arm and a sling and then I realized you're probably carrying deer food!! 🍻🍻🍻👍👍👍 Again I have a concern I truly hope you have an apprentice you're teaching!! Going back and watching videos will not be enough!!
Bleed those diesels before cranking, itll start alot easier. also never buy a non starter diesel yanmar copy 🤣 as an apprentice that was my job, to start them up.
Those engine are very loud in enclosed spaces I'm sure you found that out :D
WHAT? : )
Surely they have a dry dock in that port, where you can put that boat in and then do the tests that they require to prove its stability.
Nope, not that kind of port. Mainly fertilizer, grain, steel, and fuels.
Can’t wait to see you start her up and motor down the Ocean iv been watching for some years now .
FLORIDA!! come visit me in south florida. Though a little cool currently to take the day sailer out currently.
I dont know about that pull start spindle spinning around at pantleg level.
Check and see if the diesel uses a Honda clone block if it does you can buy a electric start conversion for it
Love this project and really like seeing so many other folk's projects. Helps me off the couch.
Sounds like things are looking up.
I could see the fuel manifold flexing when you turned the cutoff valves. Looks like it's hinging on a single bit of 1/2 inch copper. I recommend a bracket to brace/secure that manifold. It'd be a drag to break that underway!
Looking forward to the launch ! One day at a time.
Have fun on the high seas doug
Great news that your insurance is in order. Have fun in Florida, wish I was down there myself right now. I can't wait till I move out of the North East soon! Have fun sailing.
