In today's vlog I head to Taipei wholesale market located next to Songshan airport, a bustling area where you can find pretty much anything from fruits, vegetables, meats, seafoods, cooked dishes, king crab, wine, just about anything!
I take you on a shop inside the fruits and vegetable section of the market and see actually how cheap, or not so cheap some very simple and basic staple items cost. I was surprised how much I paid for 4 items of what should be cheap vegetables, well, they are cheap everywhere else around Asia that I've visited, but here, seems not.
I end up spending a lot more than expected at this wholesale market, do locals really pay that much for cabbage???
According to the internet, this means a Taiwanese local has to work about 50 minutes to earn enough to purchase one cabbage (minimum wage stats), to put this into perspective, a UK worker would be paying £10 for a cabbage....so I'm confused...
Cabbage Cabbage Cabbage, there's no cabbage emoji, so disappointed 😜
I hope you enjoy the video today 🙏

Veggie at 14:40 is "water Lily" stems. It grows in the pond. Very delicious when stir-fried.

Markets in Taipei city can be a bit more expensive than markets in New Taipei city. But again, it depends on districts, because of the rental costs.
Cabbage is more expensive recently. Prices for fruits and vegetables changes depending on the seasons and also the weather.

the best season to buy vegetables in TW is actually winter. Cabbage and tomato are not cheap in the summer time.

Produce price varies depending on weather. Every time after a typhoon hits, produce prices go way high. I think you did well.

Oh wow really. That definitely could be a contributor as to why it's a higher price that day...but still I see the same price of cabbage in Carrefour for 8 weeks already... Why? 🤣

I remember a time when there were no supermarkets in Taiwan (ok.. in the late '70s). All we had were fresh markets that my mom went to every day to buy what we needed. Fresh markets are the best!

9:32 Dan, whenever you see the character 斤, Taiwanese catty, it is equivalent to 0.6 KG. So when you see a sign which says 1斤70, that means it costs you 70 Taiwanese dollars for 0.6 KG, or 117 NTD per kilo, or 2.51 British pounds per kilo. Just remember in the wet market here in Taiwan they measure the weight in Taiwanese catty (=0.6KG), not KG.

    • @TonyChuPT
      @TonyChuPT 10 месяцев назад +1

Also, if you simply see a price tag with only a number, say 70, that simply means how much it costs in NTD per Taiwanese catty. So 70 = 1斤70 = 70NTD/斤 = 70NTD/0.6KG = 117NTD/KG = 2.51£/KG

@@DanvsFood in traditional markets the prices are always in Taiwanese Catty (Tai Jin). In super markets the prices are in Kilos.

Get well soon Dan - hope it isn't affecting your income making ability.
It might make a good video to go to a fresh market with a local who knows the produce and how 'it all works' at some point (pricing, selecting, negotiating, best time to go, how to use produce etc.).

I live in the UK so I also notice the price differences. In Taiwan the prices tend to go up and down depending on the harvest seasons. It can also be impacted by weather conditions. Tomatoes, broccoli and milk etc. are much cheaper in the UK.
There are some great value local vegetables in Taiwan when the season is right 😂.

The price of summer season vegetables depends on the weather which is also especially typhoon season, usually the price of vegetables when typhoon hits will make you doubt 😲😵‍💫🤯btw usually the traditional market is closed every Monday !

I am glad you picked the higher priced cabbage from “Li Shan” the area where the cabbage grows the best due to weather.
Ask people “ 一斤多少錢?” ( Yi Jin Duo Shao Qian” ) : how much per Jin ( the Taiwanese measurement which is very close to US pound)
