UK Prepares To Field DragonFire On Ukraine Battlefield, Seeks “Expedited” Production Of Laser Weapon

- Ukraine will likely receive prototypes of the UK’s powerful "DragonFire" high-power laser weapon. According to Secretary of State for Defence of the UK, Grant Shapps, the weapon could have "huge ramifications" for the conflict in Europe. The DragonFire weapon is expected to be rolled out by 2027, but Shapps said he wanted to "speed up" production and make it available sooner. Shapps said this could have a significant impact on the war by offering Ukraine a cost-effective method to destroy Russian drones.

The worst thing that can happen is that it doesn't work. The best thing that cold happen is flaws/modifications/re-designs can be carried out swiftly on the information received from combat not from a laboratory. Simple. A Laser ray can engage one drone at a time. A swarm of drones can easily wipe it out. Obviously, the cost will no longer be £10 as it seems 😂

The U.S. system in the works is powerful enough that it should be able to take out about 60 targets per minute.
A 500kw system is also being developed that would take out targets in fractions of a second.
Ultimately, it could be mounted on say a humvee including a gen set.
Also, will be an all weather weapon unlike current systems.
It is however, a line of sight weapon. But mounted on an aircraft, line of sight is a long distance compared to land based.

I heard in order to generate a laser beam powerful enough, it requires a great amount of electrical power, so, you can knock drones down one at the time, not sure what happens if a dozen or so show up at once...

The U.S. has lasers under development that can take out a drone in less then a second. If you have just 2 lasers, it would be near impossible to overwhelm them.
Maybe the crux editor has a bit of itching on his rear and needs some game changer!
I've read that smoke and water vapor (clouds) hinder the laser's effectiveness, perhaps making it totally ineffective if the "cloud/smoke" is dense enough.

They are advancing fast. In the U.S., they replaced a 15kw laser with a 30kw before the former could even be installed for final tests. A 75kw planned became a 150kw. 300kw in the build stage and a 500kw is already in development.👈Terminates targets in a fraction of a second and will be mountable on a vehicle the size of a humvee.
