- Bits and Bytes was a Canadian television series, produced by TVOntario in 1983. It starred Luba Goy as the instructor, and Billy Van as the student.
From Wikipedia - The original series featured an unusual presentation format whereby Luba Goy as the instructor would address Billy Van through a remote video link. The video link would appear to Luba who was seated in an office on a projection screen in front of her. She was then able to direct Billy who appeared on a soundstage with various desktop computer setups of the era. - Наука
Wow last comment a year ago! Time to give this bad boy a bump
I remember this I really enjoyed it
Theme music is a lift of Kraftwerk's Neon Lights
this is gold
Thank you for posting, this really brings back memories. I can still remember watching this when it was first run, not long after our school got it's first computer (a Commodore PET of course). I recall how amazed we were that this computer could communicate with other computers by sticking a telephone receiver in the big black rubber cups.
Good day
I too remember this program.
Wow the late great Billy Van...miss Him!
I was riveted to this show when I was a kid. I loved computers and this was a very very friendly way to understand them.
at 7:00, see also Ohio Players 1970's song Rollercoaster Of Love, for a familiar sound from 0min29seconds through 0min31seconds in that song, David Geelish
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THESE! I've attempted to purchase this series from TVOntario, but they don't make it available, anymore. This will be my first time seeing a full episode since I originally watched it back in the 80's.
I used to watch this show as a kid and I thought that I would never ever be able to use a computer.
Wow, the animated sequences are very reminiscent of the animations from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy TV show!
this is a PET computer, was a flop for schools lasting less than the 6-month warranty, disposed of by the BARN LOAD in less than 1 year all were removed, the cost of trying in the beginning , yes i saw the barn load and knew the technician trying to fix them by resetting cables into there the place was the most of the falt, still it was a pain to all
Omg I loved this show as a kid. Got me more into programming.
Ah! Great Video... Reminds me of my computer programming classes I took at the community college back in the '80s. I love it, Thanks!
I use to watch this show when I was a kid... damn, I'm old...
I grew up with this show when I started programming back in 1981. :D
Theme song sounds like Kraftwerk!
Great show.
I totally want to remake the Binary discussion in Powerpoint, including the exact dialog :)
...He should Probally Have Igor & The Oracle Help Him!!!
Bah we're not old! It is weird to think that computers were such a small part of life back then though!
Nice fantastic voyage starting at 7:16 in this video see also, Video Game interactive maps deeply inside intelligence telelectronics! The game to titles are Saints Row IV, computer level, and N64 (Nintendo 64, not identical to Commodore 64), game titled California Speed, Silicon Valley race track. There's likely more than that even! David Goresh!
I felt like Billy Van the other day trying to figure out Windows 8. Sign of old age, or sign of crappy software? :)
@TurdHeart Actually, it has got to be the same studio who animated the Eureka! educational cartoon series for TVOntario. It has the same cartoon style with Billy Van as the narrator.
It's like an old man calling tech support.
Gotta love Billy Van! From The Hilarious House of Frightenstein!

What is the name of the guy who narrates the animated bits. I recognize his voice from PBS shows.
Because computers use a binary system, and operates based on a system of zeroes and ones, a kilobyte is 1,024 bytes (2 to the power of 10 bytes), not 1,000 bytes.
@sygo7g Awesome, thanks for the info! Didn't know they were doing that, I'll definitely keep an eye out for it, maybe even email a polite request.
LOL awesome, I hacked the hell out of my VIC-20, gave it voice, made a data recorder with a regular $20 tape recorder. Radio Shack was my candy store!
The Hilarious House of Byte-enstein.
it is
Everytime I see Billy Van I see Grizelda the witch
I can't take Luba seriously. I hear sarcasm throughout her dialogue. The future ruined my impression of you in the past!!!
It's true. She's snarky as hell
