    I hardly ever believe on that "luck theory". But these 2 england victories have made me believe that if you do your work with whole heart against any difficult circumstance,,, somebody from somewhere will help you in getting through tough times.
    And victory will be yours.

      Has been done 14 times in test cricket. 6 times this century. 5 times the batsman single handedly dominating stayed unbeaten for last wicket. Once mahela got out within 10 runs of target yet SL won. Done 7 times post 1998. So has happened quite a few times, with 50% coming in last 21 years. In fact, 0.6% of all test matches have ended in 1 wicket wins.12 of of the 14 being above 200 targets.

    5 persons responsible for England winning and Australia losing this test match are the followings:-
    1) Ben Stokes (He is the biggest reason of course, just out of superlatives to describe his brilliance)
    2) Nathan Lyon (Missed that simple run out opportunity of Jack Leach)
    3) Marcus Harris (Dropped Stokes at third man right towards the end of the match after doing all the hard work)
    4) Tim Paine (Should never have used that review against Leach. That Cummins' delivery was clearly pitching outside the line. You can't waste a review just being hopeful for no reason when it's pretty straightforward like it was in this case)
    5) Joel Wilson (Yet another howler, unbelievable)
    P.S:- Take a bow Stokes...
    Mr. Wilson should not officiate in a match of this magnitude in near future bcoz he is not yet ready to perform in such a big stage...

      6) Stokes leaving Christchurch NZ

  • @theviewer5262
    @theviewer5262 5 лет назад +13

    Quite a few comments saying that there are better innings etc. absolute nonsense. There are a lot of great innings for a lot of different reasons, but you can’t eclipse what Stokes achieved today. This is someone who won England the World Cup just a few months ago by showing an incredible amount of skill, resilience and self belief; he’s come into an Ashes series in a squad which isn’t the best and where a lot of criticism is being thrown around. 1-0 down, 67 in the first innings as a team and knowing that if England don’t chase 359 we’ve effectively lost the ashes as clearly tying on 358 is unlikely. He’s seen wicket after wicket fall and the chance of winning became slimmer and slimmer, to the point where he was left with a number 11 needing so many more runs to win the game. Added to all of that is the fact that Australia only bowled badly in parts - Stokes was on 3* from 70+ balls at one stage and had to fight and leave the ball exceptionally carefully. When he was settled and the bowling became ragged he took full advantage and hit so many boundaries despite the mass of pressure which comes with a test match in an Ashes series which will directly determine the end result if he was to make just a single mistake. Yes the poor umpiring is a shame but the reality is that every great innings has an element of luck and DRS would have resulted in many great innings having been lost to history in previous years (the LBW which we’re talking about may not have even been considered in the cricket we saw years ago). But... the most impressive thing which sets the innings apart for me over some of the others being discussed in this thread - Stokes bowls. 20+ overs in the previous innings, 3 wickets in an excellent spell; that makes it more special. The mental fortitude and the refusal to give in despite the pressures on him as an all rounder in the match makes this innings almost unbelievable. I didn’t think it was possible to achieve what Stokes has today and it’s truly amazing that he made that result happen.

    • @adg4598
      @adg4598 5 лет назад +1

      nobody's saying or denying anything he did ...... there can only be one "best" innings though .... and this one, say what you will, does not qualify .... majorly due to conditions ...... very hard to rate innings like these but surely you place an innings where a batsman scored 50% of the team's runs in horrid batting conditions over this one where the pitch was placid? Because the rest of the factors are the same.
      Here England shot themselves in the foot in the 1st innings, when the conditions were not difficult. Not Stokes fault, agreed. Added pressure, agreed. That was the same in Barbados.
      See I m not saying one bit that Stokes played worse than that guy or any other innings for that matter. Stokes had pressure of Ashes and fans. How much? Maybe unfathomable. Maybe it boosted him instead. These things cannot be analysed via cause and effect.
      In my opinion, stokes innings is below Lara's because lara was ABSOLUTELY ALONE on THAT pitch, under who knows how much pressure with that unruly caribbean crowd, ready to go off at any moment. He wins hands down in my opinion. You can have yours. But to blatantly say that this(stokes) is the best test innings of all time, anyone will say that is absolutely false.

    Sometimes I feel it's the hype of the matches that go on to define what constitutes the greatest innings and great players ! With due respect Ben stokes surely played the innings of his life, and you could see the passion in him to make the series alive since he was bowling yesterday.. unbelievable grit and surely the best paced innings. From extreme slow to bit attacking to taking apart the bowlers, it was some show indeed !
    But coming to the main point, kusal perera played a very similar innings against SA this year adding 78 for the last wicket, in which no 11 scored none. He scored those runs in SA and none gave it a shot that SL with such a weak team would defeat SA! But because the match carried no hype and most of us got to know about it post match, that innings is not talked much about.. but because it was ashes and everyone watching, praises pour from all directions.. ummm.

    • @prathusingh7642
      @prathusingh7642 5 лет назад +1

      This means the added pressure (because of the hype of series and the people watching) which is the defining thing. That's why Stokes inning would count as one of the greatest one. Kusal's inning was one of the best. Pressure made Lyon to spill the ball and Wilson to not give out to Stokes.

    • @tad555
      @tad555 5 лет назад +2

      @@prathusingh7642 Perera's innings is right up there, unfortunately nothing beats the Ashes in test cricket. Comparing both knocks is extremely difficult, I'd argue Perera's was more impressive as it was away from home in conditions Sri Lanka would usually get destroyed in. However Stokes knew he had to clear the rope or the series was done, and not to mention coming back from that shocking 67 all out(plus bowling). Today and Sri Lanka vs SA clearly show that test cricket is the most important format hands down, nothing beats it for drama and twists and turns

    • @adg4598
      @adg4598 5 лет назад

      @@tad555 conditions were much more difficult for perera ..... to negate the seam movement he made room and just whacked everything out of sight. Stokes played on a good batting track. His sixes were timed, showing that it was a good batting track. Pressure can act both ways. It can bog you down or lift you up. What iit does to a player is not something measurable so I'd leave that alone. I would rate perera's innings higher taking conditions into account. Out of 14 test wins by 1 wicket, only 3 were away, and perera is single handedly responsible for the only one in past 80 years

  • @PrakashChandra766
