  • @biohita
    @biohita 2 года назад +3270

    Yes! This is what I was talking about! Not only makes it easier to move troops between formations, it also penalizes you. They move when there are no enemies, but if trying to be greedy and pull your skirmishers the last second they get overrun, surprise! your melee troops aren't going to break formation to let you pass. This coupled with actual collisions meant that skirmishers were stuck between their fellow soldiers and the enemy. This is what I call good features that help you but don't reduce the difficulty.

      @Rafael_Fuchs 2 года назад +49

      @@sakesaurus Spamming move orders for a second or two tends to get them to respond more quickly. Turning off skirmish behavior when you want them to move without their AI overriding the command is also very important. It's not foolproof, but it generally will get them to respond quicker.
      You also have to take into account the moment it takes for the unit to turn in the direction you want them to run. Changing formation to keep the shape they're in when moving at a 90 degree angle of where they're facing will decrease the time it takes for them to move by up to 5 seconds, depending on how you like to have formations. It's also a sneaky way to keep models alive in a unit by forcefully moving the damaged ones to the back of the formation with some micro.

    • @CheriShin21
      @CheriShin21 Год назад +7

      Late comment but regarding the skirmishers not responding immediately to a move command, what I do in medieval 2 (works also in rome 1 I believe) is quickly double tap the formation button (tap to put them in loose/close formation, tap again to revert them to their initial formation). This seems to "reset" the unit and make them stop whatever they are doing even in the middle of loosing a volley. You can then command them whatever and they would respond immediately. Works also with archers and all units generally. I also keep skirmish mode off so that it would not override my commands.

      If i remember there is another cool feature. RTW1 has a simple body shot marker for range shots. That is, if the projectile hits a shield, it will block it unless is heavy projectiles (such as siege ones). If hits the body, it causes damage mitigated by the armor value, and usually headshots are fatal unless they have an helmet (if so it calculates with armor values).
      RTW2 all projectile blocking rolls a chance. Having a shield only reduce the chance to harm by about 20-25%.

All I had were two units of French noble knights. When the reinforcements came in I charged out my knights and laid a devastating charge on the reinforcing army in the corner of the map. I was able to hit them all at once killing hundreds on the charge. The reinforcing army broke and routed then I turned round and mopped up the small besieging force easily. For some reason I haven’t forgotten it in all these years. Nicely done Apollo thx for great content and positive attitude.

"20 things you don't realise happen in the battlefield" or something like that. For example, I just figured out that if you try to charge from inside charge distance, troops will charge at different speeds meaning they will very unorganized charge that will be ineffective and spread the formation. Which kinda makes sense because if you tell a tightly packed formation to suddenly run, many people will bump against eachother. Best way is to give them speed then charge. These little things make me love the game a lot. Kinda wish I knew how to program a game and make a modern looking medieval with the collisions of Rome, the power of missiles in medieval, and the beautiful spear heads that cav make on light infantry formations

      Rome 2 was the last major historical total war and that was almost a decade ago. After that all we got was Attila and Thrones of Britannia (neither were that good).
      And no I don’t count Three Kingdoms or Troy as historical. Their source material reads more like fantasy than history and the fact they have individual hero units speaks volumes.
      All this while they still haven’t touched (at least not extensively) the Pike and Shot Era (Thirty Years' War, English Civil War, French Wars of Religion, Ottoman Wars in Europe) nor have they touched the Victorian Era (Crimean War, American Civil War, Paraguayan War, etc.).

      @@deumevet nah the base races are pretty good. It's only expensive if you want it all in one shot. Granted they should bundle it all up for half off for the first two games since they are old now.
      But really once you find your favorite race just get dlc for that. Mine is dwarves and ogres so. That's one to two for me lol.

    total war three kingdoms has this feature just with a single man general unit like say (example : General Cao Cao can move through whole formations on a horse they will all get outta his way). So with that in mind we know they can add these features to the new games they just choose not to or have forgotten the application of the feature completely

    Rome 1 does have collision. Rome 2 didn't on release (thousands of videos if you want to look) but it was patched in later, though it never functioned as well as Rome 1's and would lead to rubber banding and such.

    CA seriously needs to take a page from Bohemia Interactive with ARMA and update this ancient game engine. It worked for Napoleon and Empire, kinda for Shogun but moreso Fall of the Samurai.... and thats about it. They should use Medieval 3 to completely redesign how cav and infantry behave in the game engine cause right now it feels like an indie studio made this.
    For "Creative" Assembly, that lot sure isnt all too creative.

    The fact that the more disciplined units woud fucking form in columns to let the others pass is insanely good.

    I adore rtw2, but this soft collision stuff is really noticeable after I've put a few hundred hours into it.
    The patching seems worse too.
    I lost three Praetorian Guard units after they climbed a ladder and decided to merge together into a single, stationary, blob.
    Well almost stationary, they kept vibrating a bit, presumably this is them writhing in pain after being melted together in a blob of 400 men. 🤣

    I am so sad to see developers loose the love to the details more and more. I rather have bad graphics etc, but a detail rich game.
    Play starsector for example. Old gen graphics but still unmatched by most games

    Looks like it functions almost identically. Only real difference is a slight upgrade and pathing (though its still terrible in newer titles)

    They did that because game review were complaining that units get stuck in each other

    Why don’t we get to keep cool stuff like this? Watching units change formations is awesome
