    "Why is brotherly love no love?" The priest hinted at it, when he asked if they would save him if he would fight on the battlefield. He is implying that the brothers only help each other, but he is talking about unconditional love in a christian sense, because... he is christian. The concept of love and kindness to other people was outside of christianity relatively rare. Then this cult came along that had a crucified carpenter as religious figure and spread the message "love everybody, even your enemy". Kinda new for vikings :D He will explain in more detail in a later episode though, so dont worry.

    Okay, you might have heard this by now, but what the priest is thinks of as love, and the kind of love he wants to see is called Agape. Back in the day Greek philosophers came up for different classifications or types of love, because love for family is different from love for your closest friends, both of which are different from love for the person you've been dating for a few months and are clicking with, all of which is different from the love from somebody you've been married to for decades, etc.
    Agape is more or less the highest form of love, love of everybody equally and without preference, so being just as willing/compelled to help a new acquittance or someone from work that you barely know the same as you would if it was a sibling, a lover, or your closest friend asking for a help or a favor.
    The reason he reacts the way he does to the story about Thors is because he sees it as an example of Agape, that a warrior in the middle of fighting against a group of dozens of murderous vikings would go out of his way to make sure not to kill any of them. (In fact Thors even threw that oar to the one dude he knocked overboard, if you remember that.) And it's a big deal to the priest because Agape is supposed to be godly love, the love of god for all people and creation, and yet the priest sees a complete lack of it in the world made by god or in people supposedly created in god's image and such.
    To speculate a little, I think the priest is having a massive crisis of faith as a result, maybe struggling with the thought that even god lacks Agape and is actually not good, perfect, all-loving as he's supposed to be, maybe even evil and cruel, and that is driving him into depression and despair. Because if god made the world and humanity and both of those seem to totally lack Agape, and god is willing to punish humanity forever for past sins and such, then what does that say about god? Hence why the priest does so much drinking.

    The priest's ideas had a significant alignment with the ancient Chinese Mohism where "universal love", or "impartial care" was proposed as a solution to most if not all problems of society. According to Mozi/Mo Tzu, issues such as conflicts, greed and hatred only arise because people care for themselves more than other people, care for their nations more than other nations, care for their possessions more than others' possessions, care for their families more than others' families, etc. The Mohists acknowledged that this ultimate form of compassion was overly idealistic but nevertheless preached and pursued it in many ways.
    Another tenet of Mohism was "non-aggression". They believed all conflicts are inherently unethical and that conflicts and bloodshed should be avoided or deterred wherever possible, a belief that was definitely shared by Thors. As an organised group of scholars and engineers with a decent following of able-bodied young men, the Mohists often joined military conflicts on the defending side (which were almost always the weaker) to deter stronger nations from attacking their neighbors.

    I think an important apart of the intro and the general theme of 'love' that is brought up throughout the show, is to remember that at this time, 'love' in the biblical context had no definition besides interpretation through the bible. He is confused as to what love means because it is hard to project the purely biblical meaning of the term (generally 'to be close to god') into every single facet of life. This is why he is amazed by a person like Thors, who attempts to show mercy to those around him; he sees Thors as someone close to the meaning of 'love', as he shows a similar mercy to God

    • @aemeth5418

  • @lusiusgregoriusquietus1733
    @lusiusgregoriusquietus1733 2 года назад +2

    The word "love" refers to different modes of being. It's unfortunate that English, and most languages for that matter, use the same word to refer to different mental states, even if they share some similarity. For example there's the sort of love where you want to be one with something, which involves "lust", e.g. love for food (you want to eat the food so as to become one with it), love for a partner (having sex and being close to them is a way of "being one with them"). And there's love for things that were once part of you but have grown independent, which does not involve lust, and is usually unconditional (love of a parent for their child, and for religious people, love of God for his creatures).

    For most of the series the pagans are portrayed as more hungry for glorious death and the christians as more civilised, see Askeladd/Thorfinn and Canute/Priest for example. This episode questions that, it makes a point out of a sort of deathwish being inherent to christianity as well with their fetishization of heaven and only the "sinner" surviving. On the other hand the two brothers fighting for each other show that the vikings are not all mindlessly fighting to die.
    The priest is a interesting character in this episode, at the start him trying to warn the villagers can be seen as noble. However in the end he lets Anne go without alerting anyone, even though she is the only one left alive and is probably going to give their position away. So in that sense the priest can also be seen as selfish because his decision will likely lead to more suffering and death than just killing Anne. For as cruel as he is Askeladds arguments are arguably more rational, killing them all in one swift blow so that they don't die over the winter without food anyway (releasing them) and preventing them from alerting the enemy.
    Anne being elated can have two meanings, she mentions that she didn't believe such evil men with no fear of god exist. It can be read as relief that in comparison to the slaughtering danes she really is not a bad person for stealing one ring. Or she can be seen as looking up to the danes for livign their lives without restraints or fear of god. Or both. She feels both liberated by the loss of her family and them no longer potentially judging her for the theft and by the thought that they might have gone to heaven, yet she clings to life.
    Also interesting that Askeladd talks about raiding being a tradition, but he himself has said previously that he hates the danes, whose tradition he is citing.....

I agree with you that the purpose of this chapter is that human nature enjoys on doing evil and sinning. That is true.
