    Guys. I can't stress enough how much you've helped me throughout my carrier and life. I've been following you since I started 3D back in 2015 I think and I watch all of your videos to this day. I'm actually find myself rewatching a lot of your stuff on background while I'm working cause sometimes your videos are like really pleasant podcasts with people I really like and TONS of information. This is not the first time I express my gratitude like this, but if this somehow helps or inspires you to create more, I can go on and on for days. Once again, you guys are lifesavers.

    I graduated with a Bachelors in Illustration from Ringling College of Art & Design in 2012 and have been trying to bridge the gap into 3D modeling and texturing (hopefully for gaming. Got my hands on a cheap full version of Maya 2013 back in that year as well as the ZBrush version of that time and took a stab at UV editing...nightmare. Enter 2018: ZBrush 2018 and month-to-month subscription to MayaLT and OMG, workflow of modeling in Zbrush > retop to obj > Maya UV > > save out obj with UVs attached back into ZBrush > paint UV snapshot in Photoshop and apply texture back into ZBrush and VOILA!....and thanks in part to you guys, this week, I completed my first hi rez Zbrush character model with hi rez detailing and tatoos.
    Amazing: Maya has done a 180 degree turn since 2013 in the UV editing department.
    Thanks again!

      Thanks awesome to hear :D 3D is very different these days compared to 2012, where I feel it's a lot more artistic now.

    that stitching brush looks amazing! I usually use 3D-Coat for UVs and Blender for touch ups. Did you guys hear about 3D-Coat voxel sculpting, retopo and Uv mapping tools? it's widely used in the games industry as far as I know, and it's quite an impressive tool for what it does and its price tag :) There's this guy "Anton T" on youtube that has some nice tricks using 3d-coat for concept art, if anyone is interested. Any way, as an ex-Maya user (haha) it's nice to see they've finally implemented nightshade in there, god their UV tools were so poor :P

    Big question. You guys work a lot in film, is unwrapping a something you usually do to your models? I ask this because my old 3d modelling profesor use to say "I do 3d work for motion graphics so I do not have to worry about unwrapping, that is only for games"

    • @josephbrandenburg4373
      @josephbrandenburg4373 6 лет назад +3

      TechYK Sounds like your professor didn't know what he was talking about.

    • @FlippedNormals
      @FlippedNormals  6 лет назад +3

      Wait, wait, wait - your professor said you dont have to unfold for films? Well, how do I put this... that's .... wrong :D
      We definitely unfold and have super tight uvs for movies. Literally nobody who knows anything about film production would debate that.

    • @-SANDMAN-
      @-SANDMAN- 6 лет назад

      I think if your professor said "motion graphics", he may have been creating 2D graphcs that 'mimic' 3D but he was not making usable objects in 3D space. RCAD has a Bachelors in "Motion Graphics" and the definition of that term has always appeared to me as more akin to something like Graphic Design except with 2D motion which gets TONS of use on screen for ads, commercials, etc.

    • @MyChannel-l4w

      FlippedNormals Not exactly a model that holds UDIMS but we break meshes and have their border edges share the same normals(average normals) to hide the seam. This gives the same benefits to the model(higher resolutions in desired places).

    Duuuude! I was an autodesk guy since 2014 and it was so awful UV tools it just make this relaxing process a pain. Now days is more a fun task to do (I guess) Im currently working with Blender and I need to say it.
    I fill both of them have super similar tools, not saying That ¨Blender add it first¨ but, I just want the persons to know that this Open source guys has pro tools too that maya took 4 years to buy ( or develop in the best cases)
    Just my humble opinion here without any intention to create conflict between autodesk and blender users

    • @RyoMassaki
      @RyoMassaki 6 лет назад +3

      No it doesn't have the same amount and functionality of "pro tools" as Maya has. The Unwrapping algorithm is worse and there are a lot of functions which are simply not there in Blender, even if you boost the vanilla program with the tex tools plugin.
      While Blender is superfast, it doesn't come close in terms of quality of the end result. Packing, Smoothing, Aligning, Unwrapping is all better in Maya. Which in the end makes Maya a faster and more comfortable solution for Unwrapping.

      For sure, i am using Blender myself and i love how fast it is. Muscle memory FTW.
      I also wouldn't mind spending less money on software. I like Maya, but i HATE Autodesk for killing off XSI and their fucking greedy price politics.

      Haha, fair point! Let us rephrase: You can get away with shady UVs for background props and such. For hero foreground work, definitely do your UVs well :D

    UV Mapping was terrible, Retopology was terrible. Jesus this software cost almost 4K and what you got is a half product, and total shit.
